A student's biggest dream is to walk across the stage during their school's commencement ceremony; getting rushed off the stage is not. This was the case for a number of African-American students at the University of Florida's ceremony on Saturday. As students were called up to receive their diplomas, some decided to perform a quick celebratory dance. But a faculty member didn't find the performances to his liking, and forcibly rushed the graduates off the stage. 473

A student at Island Park High School in Florida was suspended after the principal and other staff members saw him imitating a gun with his hands and pretending to shoot in a classroom. This happened Friday. "You shouldn't be doing something like that at all," former Island Park High School student Devan Hinton said."It's just not something to be taken lightly," Sam Sherman, who lives in Fort Myers, told Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida. The principal called the Lee County Sheriff's Office to file an incident report after he saw the student "imitating a rifle with his hands and pointing it to the classroom."Another staff member described the student making "a gesture with his arm simulating as if he was firing a weapon into the classroom."A third staff member said the student "stood in the classroom doorway and made a machine gun style pose with his arms pretending to shoot at the classroom.""That isn't OK. With everything going on, that's not something to joke about. That's lives in someone's hands," Hinton said. The principal said he didn't think the student was serious but will not tolerate this behavior in school, so he suspended him. It's an action Sherman said he agrees with for the safety of the students."It's better to be preventative than wait and let it go on, and God forbid something else occur," he said. The principal of Island Park High School, Arthur Nauss, sent WFTX this statement:"I took the disciplinary action of sending the student home after I observed him pointing his finger at another student imitating that he was shooting a gun. The student pointing the finger and the student he was pointing at know each one another and were laughing at one another. There was no threat being issued but I believe it necessary to make it clear to the student, and all our students, that this is unacceptable behavior considering the recent events here in Florida. I called the student’s mother to inform her of what had occurred and let her know I would be working with the student in the future to ensure this behavior does not reoccur. When the student returns to school he will be informed that any future actions such as this one will result in a suspension or expulsion from school. I will also let him know that actions like this in the future will be reported to the appropriate authorities." 2379

A reunion between pet and owner could paw-ssibly warm your heart and bring hope.A man in Bangor, Maine went to an animal shelter last week to find a new pet. The man was looking for a cat to help heal his heart after his kitty, Cutie Pie, disappeared a week before. As the man walked through the kennels, he lingered at one in particular. When the cat turned toward the man, he “erupted with joy,” according to a Facebook post from Bangor Humane. It was Cutie Pie. The man’s phone was filled with pictures of Cutie Pie, “leaving no question that this reunion was the real deal!” 584

A routine trip to Walmart turned into a nightmare for a Maryland woman, but now she is using her negative experience to help others. Cynthia Morales and her boyfriend Linwood Boyd, who are both blind, were at the self-checkout lane at the Walmart in Owings Mills, Maryland in late July 2017 when they asked an employee for help. While the self-serve kiosks do issue some spoken prompts, it was still a challenge for Morales and Boyd to check out. A Walmart employee helped the pair finish their transaction, but unbeknownst to Morales and Boyd, they requested in cashback, which the employee pocketed. Because no audio prompt gave them a total of their transaction, the couple had no idea this happened until the machine told them to take the cash. Unable to check their receipt, the couple asked someone outside of the store to read them it and discovered they had been charged the extra . The money was returned, but Morales and Boyd decided to shop at another nearby Walmart from then on. Because of their experience at the Walmart, they are teaming up with Melissa Sheeder — another blind Marylander — the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) and the National Federation of the Blind Maryland to sue Walmart under the Americans with Disabilities Act. “What happened to Cindy Morales is an extreme example of what can occur when companies like Walmart deploy inaccessible self-checkout or point-of-sale technology,” said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. “The real problem is that Walmart has decided to treat blind customers differently from sighted customers. Walmart’s refusal to deploy readily available technology to give blind shoppers the same choice sighted shoppers have — whether to check ourselves out or visit a cashier —makes us second-class customers. That is unlawful and unacceptable.”The lawsuit is asking for the Maryland federal district court to order Walmart to make its self-service checkout kiosks fully accessible to blind shoppers. The NFB says they have offered to work with Walmart to make their kiosks accessible but they declined the offer. Walmart officials released the following statement regarding the lawsuit: 2276

A Reddit user has created an iPhone shortcut designed to record interactions with law enforcement. The program, called "I'm Getting Pulled Over," automatically turns on an iPhone's camera when the user tells Siri they're being pulled over.Robert Peterson first created the shortcut in 2018, and has since updated the program to include new features. Peterson shared the current version of the shortcut on Twitter as it has gained traction amid weeks-long anti-police brutality protests in cities throughout the country. The shortcut:Pauses music that may be playingTurns down the phone's brightness and volumeTurn on Do Not DisturbSends a message to an emergency contact that includes the user's current location and lets the contact know the user is being pulled overOpens the phone's front-facing camera and starts recordingWhen the recording is stopped, the program sends a copy to an emergency contactOn Reddit, Peterson said the programs works best when phones are mounted on a dashboard. To download the shortcut:Download the "Shortcuts" appRun another shortcut in the app, click "Gallery" to see the other options (this step is necessary to allow you to run an untrusted shortcut)Go to "Shortcuts" in settings and turn on "Allow Untrusted Shortcuts" Open the current version of the shortcut in SafariFollow the prompts and select an emergency contact to whom the shortcut will send informationTo activate the shortcut, say, "Hey Siri, I'm getting pulled over."According to Peterson, there is not currently an Android version of the shortcut.Anyone having issues running the shortcut can click here for help. This story was originally published by WFTS in Tampa, Florida. 1681
