CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Two teenagers were stopped in their tracks when they looked into a tree and found a creature looking back at them along a Carlsbad street.Two Fridays ago, around 10:30 a.m., a freshman college student did a double take while walking along Babilonia Street in the La Costa area. He called a friend, who drove right over. They made a quick recording."Omigod, look at him," one of the teens is heard whispering in the video.Perched in a tree, about 25 feet up, was a mountain lion, growling.The mother of one of the teens tells ABC 10News soon after they stopped recording, they looked up, and it was gone.Lauren DuBois of Project Wildlife at the San Diego Humane Society, says it's hard to tell the big cat whether the mountain lion was a juvenile or an adult. She says it's not surprising it was in a tree."Not unusual at all. They will climb trees, and rest in trees quite often," said DuBois.Dubois says it was likely relaxing after a long night."They can have up to 100 square miles of a territory. Most of time they are hunting from dusk to dawn, so a lot of the time, that’s where (tree) they will be resting," said DuBois.The concern? Less than half a mile away, is La Costa Meadows Elementary School, which began in-person learning in October.Neighbors tell us there have been sightings of a mountain lion in nearby Box Canyon for years. One of those neighbors did file a report of the most recent sighting with state Fish and Wildlife officials.DuBois say this big cat wasn't being aggressive. What about the growl?"Hey, I’m up here. Don’t want you to be there. I'm going to take off now," said Dubois.She says if you ever do spy a mountain lion in a tree, slowly back away and maintain eye contact."It's probably going to just leave. But some residents said they were more miserable than usual, as their power was shut off for half the day.The heatwave is here, and for those living in the deserts, things are just unbearable."My swamp cooler is going 24 hours, and I've got my ceiling fan going!" Campo resident Karen McIntyre said.But McIntyre says she is one of the lucky ones. She is worried more about her family living in Lake Morena, who, for about half the day, did not have any power."During the middle of a pandemic, during the middle of an extreme heatwave, they still send out notices advising them that they're going to be turning the power off today!" McIntyre said about her power company, SDGE.Although dated July 27, McIntrye says her family in Lake Morena received a letter from SDGE explaining the planned power outage on July 30, less than 24 hours before the planned outage. She said she had to scramble to get her two-year-old niece a place to cool off."She has a medical condition where she has to have her oxygen," McIntyre said. "She's on a feeding tube, and she has to stay in a cool house. And going out to another place or another home is stressful for her."The County has set up a few Cool Zones in East County. But McIntyre says her family and many others do not have the means to get there."That’s still too far away for a lot of people who have limited transportation," McIntyre said.SDGE says due to the extreme heat, it canceled all non-critical planned outages for Friday and the weekend. But a spokesperson said the one affecting the Delzura, Potrero, and the Campo area is a critical case of safety, where they have to replace wood poles to steel. They will be flying into McClellan-Palomar Airport from Houston, Texas.This is a joint-effort by the Helen Woodward Animal Center and Operation Pets Alive!, a non-profit that rescues animals displaced by natural disasters.Related: San Diego volunteers help homeless pups caught in TexasThis comes after 64 dogs and cats were taken in by the Rancho Santa Fe animal shelter last September following hurricane Harvey.The orphaned puppies will receive medical checks once in Carlsbad in hopes of finding their forever homes. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — A pair of brothers was arrested this week after police say they tried to carjack a man working on his vehicle on Interstate 5, assaulted him, and fled onto Camp Pendleton property.The brothers were traveling on southbound I-5 on Tuesday at about 10 a.m. when their Ford Mustang broke down just north of Las Pulgas Road. The pair walked to Vista Point and asked a truck driver for a ride to Long Beach, but the driver said no, California Highway Patrol said.The brothers then approached a 58-year-old man from San Diego who was working on his broken-down vehicle. The man was leaning over the engine of his vehicle with the hood up when one of the brothers placed the man in a headlock while the other brother assaulted the man in the face and body, CHP said.The truck driver who denied the brothers a lift saw the attack and came to the victim's aid. The brothers fled the area west, and climbed over a fence onto Camp Pendleton, said CHP.Camp Pendelton Police were nearby and quickly found and detained the two. CHP officers responded to the scene as well. The victim received moderate to major injuries during the assault and is expected to recover.Gonzalo Lopez, 24, and Eusebio Lopez, 19, both from Long Beach, were arrested and charged with assault and battery, and attempted carjacking. Gonzalo was also charged with driving under the influence while Eusebio was charged with being drunk in public. 1444

CARLSBAD (CNS) - A train struck and killed a pedestrian this afternoon at a coastal northern San Diego County rail depot, authorities reported.The fatality at Carlsbad Village Train Station on State Street in Carlsbad occurred about 2:30 p.m., according to sheriff's officials.The victim, whose name, age and gender were not immediately available, died at the scene, Lt. Christopher Collier said.Northbound and southbound Coaster train runs were suspended in the area until further notice due to the death, North County Transit District officials advised. The transportation agency was offering bus service to affected travelers. 637
