GENEVA, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo held separate talks here Tuesday with parliamentary leaders from South Africa, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Kazakhstan and the chief of the World Health Organization (WHO).During talks with Hon Max Vuyisile Sisulu, speaker of South Africa's National Assembly, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, said that the peoples of China and South Africa share a deep, traditional friendship.Wu said the two countries have seen their ties develop in a rapid and all-round way since the establishment of diplomatic relations. The two nations have carried out frequent high-level exchanges, with their mutual political trust gradually building up, Wu said.Wu Bangguo (L), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), meets with Max Sisulu, speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa, in Geneva, Switzerland, July 20, 2010.Wu added that the two countries have also shared understanding and support on issues concerning each other's core interests and maintained close coordination and cooperation on significant international affairs.Noting that economic and trade cooperation continues to expand and that people-to-people exchanges are also gaining momentum, Wu stressed that all those efforts have brought visible and practical benefits to the two countries and their people.China attaches great importance to promoting its relationship with South Africa, and at a time when the international situation is undergoing deep and complex changes, relations between the two big developing countries have transcended the bilateral category and gained increasing global and strategic significance, Wu said.Expressing hope that the two sides can join hands in enhancing their strategic partnership, Wu emphasized that the NPC is ready to consolidate friendly cooperation with South Africa's National Assembly and deepen their coordination and cooperation in international and regional parliamentary organizations. The two legislatures should also work together with their counterparts in other developing countries to call for more attention on development and express their resolve to realize the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Wu said. For his part, Sisulu said that China is an very important nation on the international stage and an important cooperation partner of South Africa.South Africa's government, parliament and political parties are committed to promoting ties with China, and are hoping for more friendly exchanges and cooperation with China in more areas, he stressed.Sisulu said that a closer relationship with China will benefit South Africa's economic development and enable his country to better cooperate with China in handling global challenges and defending the interests of developing countries.

BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese equities rose slightly Friday after the release of strong May economic data but concerns over policy tightening and other uncertainties left market participants cautious.China's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, increased in May by 3.1 percent from a year ago, the highest rate of increase since November 2008, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).The NBS data showed that growth in factory production and investment continued to slow while retail sales, the main gauge of consumer spending, grew 18.7 percent in May year on year from 18.5 percent in April.Affected by slower industrial output growth and higher-than-expected CPI data, the Shanghai Composite Index initially rose but fell in the afternoon to close at 2,569.94 points, up 0.29 percent, or 7.36 points, from the previous close. The Shenzhen Component Index rose 17.11 points, or 0.17 percent, to end at 10,239.33.Total turnover shrank to 152.66 billion yuan (22.35 billion U.S. dollars) from 167.53 billion yuan the previous trading day.Losers outnumbered gainers by 488 to 359 in Shanghai and 572 to 368 in Shenzhen.Analysts believe the slower growth in industrial output was due to recent tightening measures and that the market has turned cautious as the May CPI figure outpaced the 3-percent ceiling the government has set for this year.Lu Ting, China economist at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, said China's rising inflation may be interpreted negatively by markets. However, according to Yu Yang, an analyst at Galaxy Securities, the CPI is still "under control" and there is little possibility for a rate hike.Analysts also pointed out the decreased turnover volume reflected the fact some investors have taken a wait-and-see attitude ahead of next week's holidays.Chinese markets will be closed from Saturday to Wednesday for the traditional Dragon Boat Festival Holiday.Coal shares led the rise with a 1.8 percent gain as the May producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 7.1 percent year on year, outpacing the CPI growth.China Shenhua Energy Co., the country's biggest coal producer, climbed 0.78 percent to 23.35 yuan.

WUHAN/XI'AN, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in two Chinese provinces traversed by the Hanjiang River, the largest branch of the swollen Yangtze River, issued fresh flood warnings Friday. The Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in central Hubei Province said areas along the Hanjiang River will face severe floods.Pressure is building at the Danjiangkou reservoir, which is already dealing with the worst flooding of the year so far.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 150.74 meters by Friday, about 1.74 meters above the warning line, and is expected to rise to 152 meters before the end of the month.Engineers at the reservoir more than doubled the flow rate of water from 1,920 cubic-meters per second to 5,000 cubic-meters per second.Along the upper reaches of the Hanjiang River in Shaanxi Province, floods and landslides had left at least 73 people dead and 121 missing as of Friday noon, the provincial government said.About 213,000 residents from 24 counties and districts in the cities of Hanzhong, Ankang and Shangluo in southern Shaanxi have been evacuated. More than 60,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged.A new round of rainstorms began to pound the region Thursday. Between 20 to 80 millimeters of rain has fallen, raising water levels in the Hanjiang River.Authorities in Shaanxi have ordered disaster relief agencies and government departments evacuate flood-threatened residents as soon as possible.Floods in China this year had left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of 9:00 a.m. Friday.

XI'AN, July 17 (Xinhua) -- It is untrue to say that the investment environment in China is worsening, said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Saturday as he invited more foreign companies to invest in the country.China sticks to its opening-up policy, Wen added. In talks with heads of prestigious German and Chinese firms in northwest China's Xi'an city, Wen and visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel aim to boost cooperation between the two nations."Currently, there is an allegation that China's investment environment is worsening. I think it is untrue," said Wen when answering a question from Juergen Hambrecht, chief executive of German chemical company BASF.Foreign firms have voiced concern China's indigenous innovation policy might provide incentives for government bodies to purchase products developed by Chinese companies. The World Bank in a July report gave China a low investment environment ranking. But the amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) that flowed into China in the first half of the year rose 19.6 percent year on year, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).China attracted 12.51 billion U.S. dollars in FDI in June alone, up 39.6 percent year on year.Wen said, "Foreign investment will not pour into a country where the investment environment is worsening."Wen said China has relatively good infrastructure as well as fair and stable market environment.
