RANCHO BERNARDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Rancho Bernardo woman wants to warn her elderly neighbors to double check their water bills."Evey Borrelli is not part of the roughly 350 water customers who were overcharged when a now-former city employee misread hundreds of meters this past winter," but she did receive an incorrect bill in April of 2017.RELATED:  381

Researchers in Thailand have been trekking though the countryside to catch bats in their caves in an effort to trace the murky origins of the coronavirus.Initial research has already pointed to bats as the source of the virus that has afflicted more than 20.5 million people and caused the deaths of over 748,000 worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The closest match to the coronavirus has been found in horseshoe bats in Yunnan in southern China.Thailand has 19 species of horseshoe bats but researchers said they have not yet been tested for the new coronavirus.Thai researchers hiked up a hill in Sai Yok National Park in the western province of Kanchanaburi to set up nets to trap some 200 bats from three different caves. The team from the Thai Red Cross Emerging Infectious Diseases-Health Science Center took saliva, blood and stool samples from the bats before releasing them. They worked through the night and into the next day, taking samples not only from horseshoe bats but also from other bat species they caught in order to better understand pathogens carried by the animals. The team was headed by Supaporn Wacharapluesadee, the center’s deputy chief, who has studied bats and diseases associated with them for more than 20 years. He was part of the group that helped Thailand confirm the first COVID-19 case outside China in January. She believes it is likely they will find in Thailand’s bats the same virus that causes COVID-19.“The pandemic is borderless,” she said. “The disease can travel with bats. It could go anywhere.” 1567

President George W. Bush gave a tearful eulogy to his father, President George H.W. Bush, Wednesday at a state funeral for the 41st president of the United States. The younger Bush choked up as he quoted his father's inaugural address from 1989."In his inaugural address, the 41st President of the United States said this: 'We cannot hope to only leave our children a bigger car, a bigger bank account,'" Bush said. "'We must hope to give them a sense of what it means to be a loyal friend, a loving parent. A citizen who leaves who home, his neighborhood and his town a better place than when he found it. What do we want the men and women who work with us to say when we are no longer there? That we were more driven to succeed than anyone around us, or that we stopped to ask if a sick child had gotten better and stayed a moment there to trade a moment of friendship.'"Photos: State funeral for George H.W. Bush"Well, Dad, we're going to remember you for exactly that and much more," Bush continued. "And we're going to miss you. Your decency, sincerity and kind soul will stay with us forever. So through the tears, let us know the blessing of knowing and loving you, a great and noble man. The best father a son or daughter could have."At this point, Bush stuttered and took a moment to choke back tears."And in our grief, let us smile knowing that dad is hugging Robin and holding Mom's hand again."Robin was George H.W. Bush's second child and first daughter. She died of cancer in 1953 at the age of 3.Watch Bush's eulogy to his father in the player below.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. Protests broke out in Atlanta early Saturday, hours after at least one Atlanta Police officer shot and killed Rayshard Brooks, 27, outside a Wendy’s late Friday. In the wake of Friday's shooting, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced the resignation of Police Chief Erika Shields. "It has become abundantly clear that over the last couple weeks in Atlanta is that while we have a police force full of men and women who work alongside our communities with honor respect and dignity," Bottoms said, "there has been a disconnect with what our expectations are, and should be as it relates to interactions with our officers and the communities in which they are entrusted to protect."Body worn or dash cam video of the incident was released to the public late Saturday. Video circulating on social media reportedly of the incident shows a man grabbing a stun gun from police during a struggle and running from officers. The video shows officers then shooting Brooks as he tried to flee.“The (Georgia Bureau of Investigations) is aware that there is video posted on social media captured by witnesses in this incident. We are reviewing the video & the early investigative information in this case. We’ll provide an update as soon as we can,” the agency said Saturday morning. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations said that officers responded to a call of a man who fell asleep behind the wheel in a drive thru. The police accused Brooks of failing a field sobriety test.Police then claimed Brooks struggled with officers during the arrest. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations said that officers then fired a Taser at Brooks.Eyewitnesses told investigators that Brooks then struggled with officers over the Taser, and that’s when at least one officer shot Brooks.Brooks was transported to the hospital, and he died during surgery.Atlanta has been the site of a number of large protests in recent weeks in the wake of the death of George Floyd. Floyd died on Memorial Day in police custody after a Minneapolis police officer held a knee against his neck for nearly nine minutes. The NAACP reacted to Saturday's shooting via Twitter. "Stop urging the black community to be patient as our people are being gunned down by those sworn to 'protect and serve.' Sweeping police reform is no longer a consideration," the NAACP said in a statement. 2349

Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee completed a significant step in confirming President Donald Trump's pick for a new Supreme Court justice on Thursday, despite Democrats' attempts to throw up parliamentary roadblocks in an attempt to delay the process. The committee reconvened at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday — four hours earlier than was previously scheduled — and held a vote that sent Barrett's confirmation to the Senate floor. No Democrats were present for the vote, following the promise of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, who said Monday that they intended to "boycott" the vote.Committee rules require that a quorum — or a minimum number of senators from the minority party — be present at the meeting for a vote to take place. Republicans simply changed the committee rules and voted anyway.Schumer tweeted Wednesday that he will force a vote to adjourn the Senate until after the election. That vote will likely fail, given that Republicans control the Senate. He and other top Democrats will hold a press conference later on Thursday.According to The Washington Post, some Democrats placed cardboard cutouts of their constituents who have benefitted from the Affordable Care Act in their seats.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he plans to keep Senators in Washington through the weekend to focus on Barrett's confirmation. McConnell has said he plans to conduct the full Senate vote on Barrett's confirmation on Monday. At this point, only two Republicans appear to be wavering in their support for Barrett, meaning her confirmation should still pass with at least 51 "yes" votes.Thursday's vote comes after the committee held four days of hearings last week. While President Donald Trump has said that he would only nominate a Supreme Court justice which he believed would rule against abortion rights and the Affordable Care Act — and Barrett's past opinions and rulings indicate she fits those qualifications — she mostly avoided answering specific policy questions, citing the precedent set by other future justices during their confirmation hearings.Democrats have argued that the Senate should hold off on appointing a Supreme Court justice until after the November election, considering that a Republican-controlled Senate chose to keep a seat vacant for nearly nine months ahead of the 2016 election rather than grant President Barack Obama's nominee a hearing.Republicans have said that because they control the White House and the Senate, they have an obligation to those that voted for them to fill the seat immediately. Opinion polling indicates that most Americans would prefer the seat be filled by whoever wins the 2020 election.Should she be confirmed, Barrett would replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a liberal stalwart who served on the high court for nearly three decades. 2846
