UNIONTOWN, Ohio — A man and a woman made themselves right at home after they allegedly burglarized a Uniontown, Ohio, residence on Christmas Eve.Uniontown police responded to the 11300 block of Cleveland Avenue around 2:00 p.m. for a report of a suspicious vehicle in a driveway.Upon their arrival, they found the homeowner's relative holding the alleged burglars on ground at gunpoint, according to the report.Richard Nippell, 38, of North Canton, was arrested and charged with aggravated possession of drugs and burglary, according to a police report. The report states he had less than a gram of methamphetamine on him. Camri Cantwell, 20, of Canton, was arrested and charged with burglary.Officer Kim Berry, of the Uniontown Police Department, said Nippell took a shower, and both Nippell and Cantwell made a pot of coffee and did laundry at the time of the alleged burglary.Police recovered the homeowner's jewelry, a computer and copies of keys to the house and car inside the suspicious vehicle.Nippell and Cantwell were booked into the Stark County Jail. 1074

Whether you had a gold medal hanging from your neck, were just learning how to stand on a snowboard, or were one of those flustered skiers wondering where all the kids in the baggy pants were coming from, you knew the name “Burton.”Jake Burton Carpenter, the man who changed the game on the mountain by fulfilling a grand vision of what a snowboard could be, died Wednesday night of complications stemming from a relapse of testicular cancer. He was 65.In an email sent to the staff at Burton, CEO John Lacy called Carpenter “our founder, the soul of snowboarding, the one who gave us the sport we love so much.”Carpenter was not the inventor of the snowboard. But 12 years after Sherman Poppen tied together a pair of skis with a rope to create what was then called a “Snurfer,” the 23-year-old entrepreneur, then known only as Jake Burton, quit his job in Manhattan, moved back to Vermont and went about dreaming of how far a snowboard might take him.“I had a vision there was a sport there, that it was more than just a sledding thing, which is all it was then,” Burton said in a 2010 interview with The Associated Press.For years, Burton’s snowboards were largely snubbed at resorts — their dimensions too untested, their riders too unrefined, their dangers all too real — and many wouldn’t allow them to share the slopes with the cultured ski elite in Colorado or California or, heaven forbid, the Swiss Alps.But those riders were a force of nature. And for all their risk-taking, rule-breaking, sidewinding trips down the mountain, they spent money, too. Throughout the last decade, snowboarders have accounted for more than 25% of visitors to mountain resorts in the United States. They have bankrolled a business worth more than billion annually — a big chunk of which is spent on Burton gear.“People take it for granted now,” said Pat Bridges, a longtime writer for Snowboarder Magazine, who has followed the industry for decades. “They don’t even realize that the name ‘Burton’ isn’t a company. It’s a person. Obviously, it’s the biggest brand in snowboarding. The man himself is even bigger.”In 1998, and with Carpenter’s tacit blessing, the Olympics got in on the act, in hopes of injecting some youth into an older-skewing program filled with ski jumpers, bobsledders, figure skaters and hockey players.As the years passed, Carpenter straddled the delicate line between the “lifestyle sport” he’d helped create — one that professed to value fun over winning, losing, money or Olympic medals — and the mass-marketing behemoth snowboarding was fast becoming.“He saw himself as a steward to snowboarding,” Bridges said. “I’m not saying he was infallible, or that he always made the right choices. But at least that was always part of his calculus: ‘What impact is this decision going to have on snowboarding?’”Though Burton is a private company that does not release financials, its annual sales were north of 0 million as of 2015. In addition to the hundreds of retail stores that sell the company’s merchandise, Burton has 30 flagship shops in America, 11 more in Europe and another 11 spread across the Pacific and Asia — a burgeoning market that Carpenter started developing a decade ago, during a time when the IOC was beginning the process of awarding three straight Winter Games to the continent.At a bar in Pyeongchang, South Korea, not far from where snowboarding celebrated its 20th anniversary at the Olympics last year, there was a wall filled with Burton pictures and memorabilia — as sure a sign as any of the global reach of a company that remains headquartered not far from where it was founded in Carpenter’s garage, in Londonderry, Vermont.For all his financial success, folks were always more likely to run into Carpenter wearing a snowsuit than a sportscoat. He was a fan of early morning backcountry rides, and he had to stay in good shape to keep up with some of the company he rode with.Burton sponsored pretty much every big name in the business at one time or another— from Seth Wescott to Shaun White, from Kelly Clark to Chloe Kim.Indeed, it is virtually impossible to avoid the name “Burton” once the snow starts falling at any given mountain around the world these days. The name is plastered on the bottoms of snowboards, embroidered on jackets, stenciled into bindings and omnipresent in the shops around the villages.The Burton U.S. Open, held each winter in Vail on a rider-friendly halfpipe traditionally recognized as the best on the circuit, remains a signature event on the snowboarding calendar.“I had no clue whatsoever that you’d be building parks and halfpipes and that kind of thing,” Burton said in his 2010 interview, when asked about the reach his modest little snowboard had had over the decades. “We’re doing something that’s going to last here. It’s not like just hitting the lottery one day.”His final years were not the easiest.Not long after being given a clean bill of health following his 2011 cancer diagnosis, Carpenter was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, Miller Fisher Syndrome, that left him completely paralyzed for a short time.After a long rehab, he was back on the mountain, and in 2018, he was standing near the finish line to watch White win his third Olympic gold medal.“Jake embraced me and told me how proud he was of me and my career, and I’ll never forget that,” White said late Thursday in 5397

Tuesday’s CNN/New York Times Democratic Party Debate will feature the most candidates at any one time for a televised presidential debate in recent memory. Last month’s Democratic presidential debate featured 10 candidates who qualified based off DNC criteria. In two previous debates, 20 candidates qualified, with the presidential hopefuls being split between two nights. Democratic party leaders said they’re hopeful having the debate on one night, even with a large number of candidates, will mean better viewership. It also means that 12 candidates will divvy up three hours of time, although in past debates, the higher polling candidates generally received more talk time. Joe Biden has led the talk time in all three debates held so far this year.Also, viewership for the last debate, which was only on one night, was on par with the second debate, which was held over two nights. PollingThere has a rather significant shift in polling since the last debate on Sept. 12. Then, Biden was a clear frontrunner in the Democratic Party. Now, his lead has practically vanished in several national polls. A Quinnipiac University poll has Warren now leading Biden 30-27. But in a Fox News poll released last week, Biden leads 32-22. A recent CBS poll showed a tied race in Iowa, and Warren leading 32-24 in New Hampshire. Sanders has consistently stayed in third place in the polls in recent weeks. Buttigieg has gone into fourth place in many polls as Harris has seen a steady drop in support after she saw a spike following the first debate.Sanders on stageAlthough he has not been on the campaign trail in the last two weeks, Sanders plans on being on stage for three hours on Tuesday night after he had a heart attack in Las Vegas. Sanders is expected to resume campaign activities on Saturday. Impeachment as a topicTuesday’s debate marks the first since House Democrats announced a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s president requesting an investigation into the Biden family. Democrats, and even a handful of GOP leaders including Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, say the phone call was inappropriate. Biden will likely get the opportunity to address whether how he handled his relationship with Ukraine was appropriate given that his son was working for a Ukrainian company under investigation by that country’s government. Other candidates have focused their attacks on Trump’s conduct rather than Biden’s. Could that change at Tuesday’s debate? Also, whether the moderators will delve into Trump’s impeachment remains to be seen. An impeachment inquiry will be a moot point in 2021 if one of the candidates on stage becomes president. On SyriaThe United States’ role in the Middle East could get a lot of airplay on Tuesday, especially given that American troops are withdrawing from Syria. This decision by the Trump administration has drawn ire from Democrats and a number of Republicans. The U.S. leaving Syria has left Kurdish fighters vulnerable to attack from the Turkish military. Kurdish fighters were holding 11,000 Islamic State group prisoners on the United States’ behalf, according to the New York Times. On Monday, Trump tweeted that he believed that the Kurds were intentionally releasing prisoners to draw the U.S. back into the conflict. While the landscape of the Middle East could be altered by 2021 given recent events, candidates should be expected to expound on their views of Middle East policy, and whether the U.S. should keep troops permanently in the region. While it never threatened the superiority of the NFL, the Arena Football League once provided an affordable alternative for families to attend professional football games. At its peak, it attracted more than 2 million fans per year, with franchises in major metropolitan areas such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Unlike traditional football, Arena Football brought fans closer to the action on smaller fields. Games typically were much higher scoring than traditional football.But in the last decade, the once popular indoor adaption of America's most popular sport crumbled. Years of crumbling culminated on Wednesday when the league announced it is officially disbanding. “We’re all disappointed that we couldn’t find a way forward and we wanted to thank our fans, our players, coaches, everyone who loved the Arena Football League," AFL Commissioner Randall Boe said. "We all love the game and tried very hard to make it successful, but we simply weren’t able to raise the capital necessary to grow the League, resolve the substantial legacy liabilities and make it financially viable.” In October, the league announced that it was suspending local operations at its six markets as it contemplated its future. The league has been on shaky ground since the league canceled the 2009 season amid a labor dispute between players and the league. When the league returned in 2010, average attendance in the league dwindled from nearly 13,000 fans per game to just over 8,000.
