SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border Patrol is gearing up for what they anticipate to be a busy summer of illegal border crossings. The agency showcased its tools and tactics Tuesday at a site near the former border wall prototypes. Five migrants suspected of crossing illegally were rescued by Border Patrol several miles east of where the demonstration was occurring in the Otay mountains. Border Patrol says a member of the group called 911 early Tuesday morning after they ran out of food and water. One of the people from the group had to be airlifted because of a leg injury. Customs and Border Protection says they detain 170 people a day trying to illegal cross the border in San Diego sector. CBP adds with more the secondary wall project being completed, people are crossing in more remote areas and putting themselves in more dangerous situations. “A lot of the people we’re encountering are surrendering themselves agents,” said Justin Castrejon with Border Patrol. Agents are certified through the state of California to respond in medical capacity similar to EMT’s. 1076

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Bike the Bay celebrated its 11th annual ride on Sunday but this year it added some safety changes. Roughly 3,000 people participated in the popular bike ride. The ride is 25 miles and takes cyclists over the Coronado Bridge, through Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and National City. It's the only day of the year where bikes are allowed on the iconic bridge. This year, the event made some changes after an accident during the ride last year. Christina Rocheleau who was not participating in the ride collided head-on with a participant who was trying to pass cyclists along the trail. Rocheleau suffered a fractured nose and three fractured vertebrae. She hasn't been on a bike since. At the time of the accident, organizers told us that they take safety very seriously. This year, they added more signs along the route, more volunteers to guide cyclists and made the route all one-way. All of the proceeds for the ride go towards the San Diego County Bike Coalition, an organization that promotes bicycles as a form of transportation and advocates for safer roads for cyclists.   1156

Class at the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet School in Balboa Park, dance is their escape.“I just love it cause it like brings me joy and it can take me to my happy place,” said Renata Scorza-Muniz.Renata has been taking regular ballet classes since she was 2 years old. But in February, her life changed.“It’s stressful, I guess, to be in the hospital,” said Renata.Renata was diagnosed with cancer, causing her to lose her vision and forcing her out of her regular ballet class. That’s when she turned to a class called Ballet for Me.“It’s just so fun to do,” said Renata.Ballet for Me is a tuition-waved class that is designed for kids with unique physical needs. Each student in the class gets paired up with a mentor to help guide them through each movement.“It just makes me so happy when I get to see students feel happy and free in class,” said Kerri DeNies instructor and creator of the class. This dance class helps the kids feel whole again. And all year they rehearse for their moment to shine and perform in front of a packed audience where they feel a little more joy and beam with confidence. 1213
