CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) - Food insecurity is a problem in San Diego year-round, and that problem has become worse with the pandemic.Campo, in San Diego's East County, is an area that struggles with access to food year-round because of its far distance. Many people choose to live in the area because of the rural setting, but also because of the lower cost of living.“We’re really below the poverty level out here. We’re lower in income out here and so grocery stores aren’t readily available right around the corner,” said Julie Atherton, a site coordinator for a food distribution that happens twice a month.Atherton said the closest major store is at least a half hour drive, so the pop-up food banks with food supplied by Feeding San Diego are crucial throughout the year, but the need has grown during the pandemic.“We serve a lot of seniors, a lot of families that have been affected by the COVID,” said Atherton.She said the older people who live in Campo are the ones who need to be more careful during the pandemic, so many of them are trying to avoid stores. This caution, combined with an already existing difficulty with getting to the store, has created a heightened problem surrounding food insecurity. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Each Monday, a group of dedicated seniors gather in their woodshop, on a mission to make the holidays a little brighter for North County kids in need. The woodworking elves of the La Costa Glen senior living community in Carlsbad have spent nearly a year creating 100 handmade toys of all shapes and sizes.The toys have up to 39 pieces, crafted with various types of wood like walnut, cherry, and mahogany. Countless hours have gone into the effort. Among the toys are a truck, grasshopper, and mouse. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — JPMorgan Chase says it will extend billions in loans to Black and Latino homebuyers and small business owners in an expanded effort toward fixing what the bank calls “systemic racism” in the country’s economic system. The bank said it is committing billion over the next five years toward programs that include earmarking more money for getting Black and Latino families into homeownership and providing additional financing to build affordable rental housing units. The bank said it expects the billion to help finance 40,000 additional mortgages for Black and Latino households, another 20,000 loans that will refinance mortgages and help construct 100,000 affordable rental units. 722

CHICAGO (KGTV) -- Police say three people were shot and one person is dead after a shooting at a Starbucks in Chicago Thursday night.According to ABC 7 in Chicago, the shooting happened in the city's Uptown neighborhood at 8:30 p.m. Police say a 12-year-old was transported to the hospital in unknown condition after being shot in the groin. An adult male was shot and took himself to the hospital.
