Here's what's making headlines in the political world on Saturday, November 24 2018:Trump administration asks SCOTUS to hear transgender ban- In yet another aggressive attempt to bypass federal appeals courts, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to hear a challenge to President Donald Trump's policy that bars most transgender individuals from military service.The policy, first announced by the President in July 2017 via Twitter and later officially released by Secretary of Defense James Mattis, blocks individuals who suffer from a condition known as gender dysphoria from serving with limited exceptions. It also specifies that individuals without the condition can serve but only if they do so according to the sex they were assigned at birth.District courts across the country have so far blocked the policy from going into effect. Harvard University has announced plans to bring back up to 40 percent of their student body back to campus this fall.They also stated all course instruction at the undergraduate and graduate level will be delivered online, whether or not students are on campus. The fall semester begins on September 2 at Harvard.Those being allowed back to campus are all first-year students and those who must be on campus to progress academically. “This will enable first-year students to benefit from a supported transition to college-level academic work and to begin to build their Harvard relationships with faculty and peers,” the statement read.Harvard said this is only for the fall semester and if current restrictions are in place next year, their priority would be to bring back graduating seniors for their last semester on campus.Those coming back to campus will be tested for COVID-19 once they arrive, and then re-tested every three days while they are on campus.“Without a vaccine or effective clinical treatments for the virus, we know that no choice that reopens the campus is without risk. The trade skills are for jobs like plumbers, electricians and carpenters just to name a few.The training program at Home Depot will be offered to veterans and underserved high schoolers nationwide, and you don't have to work for Home Depot.As for Lowe's, its training program is called “Track to the Trades” and it’s for current employees.The program will offer employees financial assistance to pursue certifications for trade skills and receive additional academic coaching. GREENCASTLE, Indiana — Protesters at DePauw University in Indiana interrupted a press conference meant to discuss recent racist writings on and near campus, one day after students demonstrated at an on-campus event led by actress Jenna Fischer. After five incidents of racial slurs were written across campus in the last two weeks, protesters interrupted actress Jenna Fischer's talk Tuesday night. On Wednesday, university officials held a press conference to discuss the incidents and Tuesday's protest. About 10 minutes into the press conference Wednesday, DePauw President Mark McCoy learned about protesters outside the doors, wanting inside. McCoy and the other officials allowed the protesters inside, where they chanted, "Meet our demands. We are not safe." For about 20 more minutes, McCoy and the group discussed the incidents, and what the university is doing to stop future incidents from happening. "We are all together addressing every issue that has happened on this campus," McCoy said. "We are committed to addressing these issues. DePauw has made so many efforts to address this and has still fallen short."McCoy eventually became visibly frustrated by the interruptions from the crowd.Fischer was on DePauw's campus to promote her book, "The Actor's Life: A Survival Guide."Watch the full press conference, protest and discussion in the video below.
