BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has urged authorities of a southeastern province to press ahead with its reforms and opening-up, and to embrace innovations in its economic development. In his four-day inspection tour in Fujian Province that began Friday, Xi spent time visiting high-tech enterprises, inquiring about villagers' incomes and held talks with university students.Efforts should be made to improve people's livelihood and solve practical difficulties for them with regard to employment, medical care, housing and children's schooling, Xi said during his visit to villages and urban communities. When visiting areas hit by June's torrential rains and massive floods, Xi urged local authorities to continue with disaster-relief work, rebuild damaged homes and agricultural infrastructures, as well as increase support for enterprises. In the coastal city of Xiamen, Xi urged government administrations in Fujian to take proactive measures to offer services to, and create "better conditions", for people from Taiwan.Further, efforts should be made to expand the scope and upgrade the level of cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, he said.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's growth is projected to average 10.5 percent in 2010 and 9.6 percent in 2011, driven by domestic demand, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a report Wednesday. The Washington-based international lending agency made the projection for the annual fall meetings this weekend of the 187-nation IMF and its sister lending organization, the World Bank."The slight moderation in recent activity is expected to continue through 2011 in light of tighter quantitative limits on credit growth, measures to cool off the property market and limit bank exposure to this, and the planned unwinding of fiscal stimulus in 2011," the IMF said in its report. The report said this year's sustained growth in retail sales and industrial production confirms that private sector activity has advanced beyond the lift from government stimulus."On average over 2010-11, private domestic demand is poised to contribute two-thirds of near term growth, and government activity about one third, whereas the contribution from net exports will be close to zero," the report said.Despite the robustness in domestic demand, the pickup in inflation in 2010 reflected mainly higher food prices rather than core inflation, the report said. The report said China's increasingly wide trading network is driving growth in numerous economies, especially commodity exporters. The report said Asia's medium-term growth depends on the rebalancing of drivers of growth -- greater reliance should be put on domestic markets instead of foreign demand. The report said such a rebalancing in China, the world's second largest economy, is critical to enhance the role of household consumption in domestic growth. The report also recommended that China implement reforms to health care, education, and pension systems to enhance the social safety net.

BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China and Turkey voiced commitment here on Monday to make joint efforts to crack down on terrorism and separatism."China would stay firm on safeguarding its national interests relating to the national sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping.Xi made the remarks in his meeting with visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, according to a press release from Chinese Foreign Ministry.Xi also expressed his appreciation during the meeting for Turkey's support of China's efforts to combat the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces that threaten to sabotage China's unity. The "East Turkistan" terrorist forces pose threats to the development and stability of northwest China, Xi told Davutoglu, noting that China wants to step up cooperation with Turkey in this regard.A bomb attack on Aug. 19 in Aksu City in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region left eight people dead, including the two attackers, and 15 others injured.Chinese authorities believe the "three forces," an umbrella category for separatists, extremists and terrorists, are responsible for the attacks.Xinjiang -- with 41.5 percent of its population Uygurs, a large Muslim Chinese ethnic group -- is China's frontline against terrorism. The region borders eight central and west Asian countries, many of which have been attacked by terrorist and extremist militant groups.Echoing Xi's views, Davutoglu said Turkey values its ties with China and would unswervingly uphold the one-China policy and crack down on any activities in Turkey that aim to sabotage China's sovereignty and threaten its territorial integrity. The two sides also hailed progress made on bilateral relations, according to the press release, pledging to intensify high level political exchange, expand economic and trade cooperation and strengthen coordination on regional and international issues in an effort to safeguard the interests of the developing countries.Davutoglu's China visit was at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi.

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's week-long National Day holiday took in 280 million yuan (42 million U.S. dollars) in film box office receipts, up 12 percent over last year, said sources in the cinema industry.Half of all ticket sales were for "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame," a film that debuted on Sept. 29, starring renowned Hong Kong actor Andy Lau and actress Carina Lau, along with mainland actress Li Bingbing.Director John Woo's new film, "Reign of Assassins," had sales of 30 million yuan during the golden week, which critics say was "ordinary" in box office performance but a "good film." Woo is known internationally for his 2000 film "Mission: Impossible II."The Leonardo DiCaprio film "Inception" continues its climb and took in 50 million between Oct. 1 and 7, making it the fourth foreign film ever to take in more than 400 million yuan in the Chinese mainland's box office. BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government on Wednesday stressed the importance for the country to improve river controls and prevent mountain floods in the wake of this year's frequent natural disasters. The statement was issued following an executive meeting of China's State Council, or the cabinet, which was chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday. In contrast with large rivers, the medium and small rivers in China are the Achilles' heel of the country's river control work, which surfaced in the wake of a series of flood-triggered disasters this year, according to the statement.Over the next five years, China will increase efforts to control medium and small rivers, remove dangers and consolidate medium and small reservoirs, as well as preventing mountain floods in a bid to protect the safety of people's lives and property, according to the statement. The central government will take flood-prone areas with dense population as priorities in dyke building and river regulation works, it said.Further, reservoir consolidation work should seek to increase the modulation capacities of water resources. The construction of flood storage regions along large rivers and lakes, including China's Dongting Lake and the Poyang Lake, should also be intensified.China will set up more radar stations and meteorological stations in flood-prone areas, and make thorough investigations across the country in order to have a panoramic view of the areas with hidden natural disaster dangers like flood, mudslide, landslide and collapsing mountains .Also, the country will strengthen ecological protection by planting more trees and vegetation to guard against soil erosion, according to the statement. To that end, the central government promised to provide financial support to local governments by increasing input and expanding funding channels, as well as strengthening supervision of construction.Floods, landslides and mud-rock flows in China killed 3,185 people and left 1,067 missing this year, as of the end of August, according to statistics from the Chinese National Committee for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs. The Chinese central government has spent 2.43 billion yuan (361 million U.S. dollars) on flood control and drought relief as of Aug. 23 this year, according to the Ministry of Finance. The meeting also noted that maintaining ecological diversity, including three tiers of ecosystems, species and genes over the next 20 years, is the basis of the existence and development of human beings and also a guarantee of safe ecological security and food safety.China will continue to improve laws and policies and promote international collaborations to protect ecological diversity, it added.
