SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Violent crime dropped in San Diego County in the first half of the year for the first time in six years, even though the region saw a spike in the number of homicides, according to a report released Tuesday by the San Diego Association of Governments.The report by SANDAG's Criminal Justice Research Division found that the mid-year number of violent crimes in the county was 5,356 in 2020, down from 5,545 last year.Mid-year violent crime totals from recent years were 5,510 in 2018; 5,421 in 2017; 5,361 in 2016; and 5,330 in 2015. The five-year increase amounted to a 4% bump in violent crime.The report found there were 52 homicides in the first half of 2020, a dramatic increase from 38 homicides measured at the halfway point last year.A month-by-month breakdown of the homicides this year showed that seven were recorded in January, three in February, 11 each in March and April, and 10 each in May and June. In 2019, January had five homicides, February had six, March and April each had six homicides, May had eight and June had seven.Among homicides in which motive could be determined, 22% were attributed to robbery -- compared to 4% last year -- and 3% were attributed to gangs -- down from 19% last year, according to the report. No homicides were attributed to domestic violence this year, while 19% of last year's homicide were considered domestic violence-related.The report also found that overall domestic violence cases reported to law enforcement in 2020 increased each month from January through March, then decreased slightly in April and May before rising 3% in June, compared to the same time in 2019."The zig-zag percentages of reports in domestic violence regionwide could be attributed to the pandemic," SANDAG director of research and program management Cynthia Burkem said. "When you factor in social distancing, including families isolating together during stressful times and with less contact with mandated reporters, it could affect an individual's willingness to report a crime to police."Reports of rape fell to 432 after reaching 539 at the midway point of 2019. Further analysis showed the biggest month-to-month changes from this year compared to last year were seen in April and May.The number of reported robberies dropped 10% -- from 1,410 in 2019 to 1,268 this year -- while the number of aggravated assaults increased 1% -- from 3,572 in 2019 to 3,604 this year.Reports of property crime totaled 24,512 in the first half of this year, down from 27,239 during the same period in 2019.In 2020, 3,624 burglaries were reported throughout the county, a 3% drop from the first half of 2019. Residential burglaries decreased 19%, but non- residential burglaries increased 9%.Property crimes includes burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Two San Diego-area teachers are among six state finalists announced Tuesday for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.According to the State Department of Education, the award honors teachers who "display subject mastery, appropriate use of instructional methods and strategies, lifelong learning and leadership in education outside the classroom."The PAEMST is presented by the National Science Foundation. "They're bright stars and prime examples of excellence in our educational system, and we hope that all students can enroll in great STEAM and computer science programs with educators like them, to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow."Khamphet Pease, a sixth-grade teacher at Wilson Middle School in San Diego, was named a finalist in the mathematics category. An educator for 14 years, Pease teaches courses in Introduction to Coding; Gateway to Technology: Design and Modeling, Automation and Robotics; and Computer Science for Innovators and Makers. From 2014-16 she also mentored 16 high school girls from schools across the county to build a microlab experiment that was sent to the International Space Station to test zero gravity.Marlys Williamson, a fifth-grade teacher at Wolf Canyon Elementary in Chula Vista, was named a finalist in the science category. Williamson, a 13-year educator, has trained fellow teachers on science and engineering practices, led the creation of Wolf Canyon's Design Den makerspace and mentored student teachers from multiple teaching programs.The eventual award winners from each state receive a ,000 award from the NSF, receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States, and are traditionally honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. 2096

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A driver was taken into custody after a passenger in his car died following in a crash in Paradise Hills early Wednesday morning.According to San Diego police, an 18-year-old driver and four passengers were in a car traveling westbound in the 6100 block of Paradise Valley Road at around 2 a.m. when the crash occurred.Police said the driver tried to make “an unsafe left” onto southbound Munda Road, but the car veered off the roadway and went down an embankment.All five people were able to get out of the car and made their way back to the street, but police said an 18-year-old girl had to be taken to the hospital.The girl, who was not identified, later died at the hospital from internal injuries.The driver fled the scene, but officers -- with the help of a helicopter overhead -- found him hiding in bushes a few blocks away surrounded by coyotes.Jail records obtained by ABC 10News show the driver, identified as 18-year-old Eduardo Douglas Jones, was booked on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run causing death/injury, and DUI.The crash remains under investigation. 1119

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A great-grandmother is pleading for the return of her late husband's ashes, after the theft of a truck belonging to the moving company she hired.A frustrated Dee Randolph spoke to 10News from her new home in Tennessee. On a day in May, Mission Transportation - the company she hired for the move - loaded up her belongings at her home in La Mesa. That same night, or early the next morning, the truck was stolen from near a parking lot in the 6400 block of Federal Boulevard in Lemon Grove. "I was just in shock. How do you react? I was stunned," said Randolph.Weeks later, the truck was found abandoned outside a vacant building near Escondido.Three-quarters of her possessions were gone, including furniture, clothing and dozens of pieces of jewelry. Also missing was an urn holding the ashes of her husband David, who passed away from a stroke in 2014."I used to carry him with me for about a year. When I was in the kayak, I brought him with me ... made me feel like he was still with me ... Now I don't feel like he's here. I feel like he's gone," said Randolph.Also stolen was a wooden sculpture and several other art pieces crafted by her husband, a millennial print of a Rembrandt etching valued at several thousand dollars, and a detailing of her lineage inside a bible that's been in her family for several centuries."I was passing it onto my grandsons to continue that history," said Randolph.That history is lost for now, along with a piece of Randolph's heart. "You don't think when you hire a moving company that you will lose everything," said Randolph.The monetary loss will be covered by the moving company and her own homeowner's insurance. Randolph hired a private investigator, who obtained surveillance video showing a white van pulling up to the moving truck. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former employee of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is suing the agency for retaliation after he said he stood up for a co-worker.Ivan Augustino moved to the United States from Sudan and still volunteers with projects for his native country. He started working for MTS in 2015.“It was pretty good,” Augustino said.Augustino worked as a Senior Applications Developer.“I am the main guy that deals with the complicated back end computer codes,” Augustino said.In 2017, he said he made a move that changed everything. It started with a co-worker.“One morning, she walked into my office pretty much in tears,” Augustino said.He said that a co-worker confided to him the Chief Information Officer discriminated against her when she asked about a promotion. The lawsuit filed against MTS claims the CIO told Augustino’s co-worker she was “not qualified for the job because of her age, her marriage and family planning status, and her relationship to an active duty military service member.”“The other question she also asked was, how old are you? You seem like you are at an age where you would be having kids,” Augustino said. It was a shocking conversation.“You know, that is wrong,” Augustino said.After his co-worker told him what happened, he first asked advice from another co-worker who then took it to human resources. Augustino said his co-worker did not want to bring the complaint to HR.“The last thing that anyone within the IT department wants is to take an issue to HR because once you report it to HR, there is going to be retaliation,” Augustino said.And that’s what happened, according to the former MTS employee. Initially, he was concerned how MTS investigated the complaint.“I was expecting someone to at least come and talk to me, but no one spoke to me,” Augustino said.He said retaliation began by the CIO and his direct supervisor.“The way they treated me just changed,” Augustino said.He claimed management suggested they would give him recommendations if he found another job. On another occasion, Augustino said they “mocked [his] English as a second language” in an email. On top of that, he said 98 hours of paid time off promised to him for working overtime on a big project was revoked, along with a promised promotion.“Coming from where I come from, I just felt like I did not even know what to do,” Augustino said.Feeling “degraded” and “intimidated”, he submitted a letter of resignation. However, he said he gave management an option.“If you can address this issue and the executive team and bring what I view as retaliation to a stop, I will pull my resignation,” Augustino said. Instead, he said he was fired and walked out of the building by security. His termination came a little over a month after he voiced his concerns about his female co-worker.A spokesperson for MTS told Team 10: “There is absolutely no validity to any of Mr. Augustino’s claims.”When asked if he would defend his co-worker again, Augustino said “absolutely.”Attorneys Zachary Schumacher and Daniel Goularte represent Augustino."This is absolutely a David versus Goliath situation," Schumacher said.Schumacher said fear is why people don't speak up."I like to compare it to battered wives syndrome, where you essentially have this person or in this case this entity who has this major power and balance who is doing all sorts of awful things and figuratively at least, battering its employees and yet they don't leave. They feel this sense of loyalty," Schumacher said. Team 10 was not able to get in touch with his female co-worker, but the lawsuit stated that she has since been moved to a “lonely, quiet corner of the office.” 3684
