IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV)— The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is looking for a mother of two accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her children’s school. Last week, the department’s financial crimes division issued a public warrant for 30-year-old Kaitlyn Faith Birchman for felony embezzlement.Birchman was the President of the Imperial Beach Charter School’s PTA, until she was voted off the board in March. Months before, board members said they began noticing a lack of funds.“There were thousands of dollars that hadn’t been paid,” current PTA treasurer Elizabeth McKay said. McKay told 10News, she began connecting the dots last year when vendors from previous years continued to bill the PTA saying they hadn’t gotten paid. That’s when McKay, a former Coronado Police Department Sergeant began investigating. When she contacted the bank, they told her their account no longer existed. "We were very lucky that the bank was willing to work with us to put together a paper trail,” McKay said. “The checks she had written to herself and signed herself. ATM withdrawals that weren't anywhere near Imperial beach or had anything to do with a PTA event."In March, the board confronted Birchman. They had a Sheriff’s Deputy come to the board meeting to explain exactly what “embezzlement” meant."She [Birchman] said that it was just a misunderstanding,” McKay said. “It was a lot of blind faith that they thought if she says everything is okay, then everything must be okay."At the end of the meeting, Birchman was removed from the Board.Now the Sheriff’s department is looking for the woman they said stole directly from kids, forcing the PTA to cancel students field trips and special events. “I want her to think about her own kids. She needs to at this point, make things right by taking responsibility of her actions,” McKay said. “That's the best lesson that she can teach her own children. And to make herself a better person from here."Birchman’s children no longer attend Imperial Beach Charter school. McKay said with the generous support of the community and a large donation from General Mills Box Tops, this school year, the PTA is financially stable again. (KGTV) - An Imperial Beach man said he was sucker punched during a peaceful protest in Imperial Beach on Sunday.Marcus Boyd was one of the people at the rally, which started at Veteran's Park. The attack happened when the group got to the beach, Boyd said."We were shouted at by three or four individuals, telling us to go home," Boyd said. "They decided to start throwing eggs at us. I crossed the street just to get a good image of the perpetrators."That's when Boyd said he was hit from behind. He still has a sore neck and headache. He said emotionally, it has been hard to watch the video. "He really tried to hurt me," Boyd said. Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina tweeted that he's called on the San Diego Sheriff's Department to "investigate the violent assault on peaceful protestors" that occurred at the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza on Sunday afternoon. Mayor Pro Tem Paloma Aguirre added that she does not want residents to feel unsafe "for exercising their First Amendment rights."According to a Sheriff's spokesman, the incident occurred at about 3 p.m. on Sunday. The protester reported that he had been punched by another man after a verbal confrontation. The suspect ran away with two men, but deputies later made contact with the two individuals, SDSO added.SDSO said the suspect was eventually contacted, but could not be identified by the victim or other witnesses. So there's always a human component to any sort of crime that that person might be conducting using their computer, smartphone, or any other sort of device."There is a big difference between cyber crime, and cyber warfare, according to the supervisory special agent."Cyber crime entails some sort of victimization of someone else. (KGTV) - The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a residential burglary that happened in the overnight to early hours on Wednesday.The break-in happened at a house on Date Avenue.According to residents someone broke into their house and stole several items while they were asleep. Taryn Williamson, who lives in the home, said the thief must have gone into their room because she noticed her purse, her boyfriend’s phone, and a Nintendo Switch gaming system, were missing.  All were on a table in their bedroom.Her purse had 0 in cash as well as credit cards. Williamson says the money was to pay for rent, but they were able to raise it back in a few hours through GoFundMe.“I’m a really light sleeper," Williamson said, "I'm really shocked I didn't wake up, he (or she) must have been really quiet."Williamson said her roommate discovered the front door was open when she left for work around 5 a.m.  They are not sure how the thief got inside, but she says it's possible someone left the door unlocked before going to bed the night before.If you have any information, you’re asked to call the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. 1223
