(KGTV) - The newest show at the La Jolla Playhouse is giving audiences a modern take on a classic tale."Fly," tells the story of Peter Pan, but it puts the focus squarely on Wendy, showing her journey from Lost Girl to a young woman."A lot of times we have your typical ingenue Wendy where a lot of the events of Neverland happen to her," explains actress Storm Lever, who plays Wendy. "In this one, you really get to watch her find her voice and find her power and own her voice and own her power."The actor says the show is perfect for its time, after the rise of the #MeToo movement, the women's march and other female empowerment platforms."Our thesis is that growing up is good," says Isabelle McCalla, who plays Tinkerbell. "It's good to grow up, it's good to grow old, and there's something really powerful about being a woman.""We need a woman that's going to take control of her circumstances and not be a victim of her circumstances," adds Lever. "We need to be teaching little girls that that's the way to conduct themselves."The show also packs some major star power. LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving drunk in the death of a motorcycle officer with the California Highway Patrol, officials said Sunday.Michael Callahan of Winchester was booked on the charges in the death of California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Licon, said Officer Steve Carapia.Callahan is suspected of driving drunk Saturday afternoon when he crossed over the right shoulder of Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore, crashing into Licon and a car he had pulled over for speeding.Licon died at a nearby hospital. Eleni Kounalakis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the state Capitol, and the California Highway Patrol is holding a bell tribute ceremony in his honor on Monday.Carapia, who knew Licon for six years, said the sergeant was well-liked and known for his work ethic and a distinct and quirky high-pitched laugh."He had a great sense of humor," Carapia said. "You could hear him laughing from the sergeant's office. You could hear him coming down the hallway ... Just an all-around great human being."He said Licon loved his job and the fact that his office was on a motorcycle."This is a tough one," he said. La Jolla, CALIF., (KGTV) -- San Diego Police detectives are investigating a vandalism case, where someone spay painted swastikas and inappropriate words in a La Jolla neighborhood.Every day, Joe Dicks usually takes La Jolla Mesa Drive to work. But Wednesday morning, he saw something very unusual. "We were disgusted by what we saw," Dicks said. He and his wife saw swastikas drawn in white spray paint in several locations along La Jolla Mesa Drive. Some were on the walls of private homes. Others were drawn on the sidewalks, on construction signs, and even the road. Dicks was so shocked, he stopped the car to take photos. "Look at what the symbol represents," Dicks said. "Hatred, intolerance, violence, I mean, make no mistake. This is a threat."San Diego Police said they got their first report at 7 am Wednesday. Then came two more reports of Inappropriate graffiti on several properties. City workers were immediately called out to clean them up. According to the Anti-Defamation League, 2018 was the third straight year of increased Anti-Semitic incidents in California. Dicks said this cannot become the new norm. "This has no place in this community, and has no place in this city, and has no place in our country," Dicks said. Especially with the deadly Poway Synagogue shooting still fresh in the minds of San Diegans, Dicks says this needs to be taken seriously.Police said they are investigating this case as a vandalism report. (KGTV) - A peace officer claims he was profiled by Walmart employees Wednesday.Johnny Aguirre says he and his wife went to the Walmart in La Mesa and he was carrying a backpack that he usually carries with him. There are items he carries in his backpack that are related to his job as a peace officer. “We walked in, and I got stopped by two greeters, they told me to put the backpack away int he lockers,” he said.Aguirre says the lockers were empty, so it was standard for all customers. He also says he noticed other people were walking around the store with backpacks.He believes employees singled him out because of the way he looked.“I got that feeling that I was profiled and racially discriminated because of the way I was dressed maybe,” he said. He says he was working all day and he was a little dirty.Walmart sent the following statement to 10News: “We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. As a company, we’ve taken several steps to help mitigate the issue of crime and the locker system implemented in our Las Mesa store is just one example of our proactive approach.
