(KGTV) - Scientists at Stemson Therapeutics say they've found a way to create new hair cells that could become a cure for baldness."We're hoping this will be the breakthrough," says Chief Scientific Officer Alexey Terskikh.For a few years, they've been working on a two-part process that turns stem cells into hair follicles. It then implants the follicle cells into the scalp to grow new hair."We have the capability to generate brand new hair follicles," says Stemson CEO Geoff Hamilton.Using iPSC's, stem cells derived from a person's blood or existing cells, Terskikh's team can direct them to become folliculogenic cells, the building blocks of hair.They then put the cells into a microscopic scaffold-like mold made on a 3D printer. The molds are about 1/5 the size of a single strand of hair.RELATED: Here are some options if you start going baldThe scaffolds help keep the cells intact, while also telling the hair which direction to grow. That will help avoid in-grown hair or hair that grows in unnatural ways."Imagine transplanting thousands, or tens of thousands of those into a scalp," says Hamilton.Their technique is different from current hair restoration therapy because it grows new hair cells. Existing methods like Rogaine or Propecia try to revive dead cells or transplant existing cells from one area of the body to another."We're inventing as we go," says Hamilton. "We're making up the path ahead of us as we go."Eventually, they say the cost of the new cells will be similar to the cost of hair transplant surgery now, which can run upwards of ,000.In addition to being a cosmetic solution for people who have gone bald naturally, Hamilton says this could help people who have lost hair due to chemotherapy treatment or from severe burns or injuries.So far, testing has proven successful in mice. (KGTV) — Police are searching for a man who disappeared from an independent living facility in la Mesa.La Mesa Police say Attila "Al" Buki left his home in the 7900 block of Culowee Street at about 7 p.m. on Sunday and did not return.Buki was on foot and does not have access to a vehicle, police say. He also has cognitive delays and suffers from dementia.Buki frequents the area near La Mesa Springs Shopping Center, police added.He's described as a Caucasian man, who was last seen wearing a long grey polo shirt, dark grey sweatpants, and Velcro sandals.Anyone with information as to Buki's whereabouts is asked to call La Mesa Police at 619-667-1400. 679

(KGTV) - A medical marijuana dispensary could be opening its doors just feet away from children in La Mesa.Last month, the La Mesa Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for New Origins Management, Inc. to open a medical marijuana dispensary, but the center says they were never contacted about it.  One woman who has a teen at the San Diego Center for Children called the pot shop counterproductive to what parents and the clinic are trying to accomplish. The nonprofit helps young people with mental and behavioral issues.The La Mesa Medical Plaza is a pretty peaceful place, but the San Diego Center for Children is worried about its future neighbor. The clinic says you can draw direct line from their front door to the front door of the proposed medical marijuana dispensary."Our concern is having our youth that close to a medical marijuana dispensary," said Dr. Cheryl Rode, VP of Clinical Operations for the Center.The clinic occupies Suites J and K but a medical marijuana dispensary could be moving into Suite C.  The offices share a walkway and parking lot."Literally, our clients and their clients would be interacting pretty regularly," Dr. Rode said.In November 2016, La Mesa voters passed Measure U, prohibiting medical marijuana dispensaries from opening within 1,000 feet of a minor-oriented facility.It's defined as any after-school program, teen center, club for boys and/or girls, children's theater, or children's museum, where the primary use is for people under the age of 18.  The Center argues it qualifies as an after-school program."We feel that we clearly meet the criteria for a minor-oriented facility and that our facility was overlooked," Dr. Rode said.But the city disagrees.  They tell 10News because voters approved measure U, they don't have the ability to interpret the law or intent outside of its plain language, which does not include mental health and therapeutic services.  Director of Community Development Kerry Kusiak city sent us a statement that reads in part: 2136

(KGTV) — Burglars raided the home of a cancer survivor in Lakeside, stealing her road bike days before she was planning on competing in a triathlon.In a home off Valle Vista Road, Susan Sterger made a wrenching discovery on Sunday night."When I walked into my bedroom, everything was torn apart." said Susanna Sterger, choking back tears.She and her roommates were cleaned out. Laptops, jewelry, clothes were stolen. She ran to the garage and her heart sank."Just felt really angry and violated," said Sterger.Missing from the garage: her triathlon bike, wet suit, running clothes, and even her shoes - everything she needed to compete in a triathlon on Sunday in Solana Beach."Everything I worked so hard for, I thought was taken from me in one moment," said Sterger. Four years ago, she experienced another heart-stopping moment: a diagnosis of cervical cancer.She went through many rounds of chemotherapy. The cancer returned five different times. "It's been really hard not to give up," said Sterger.She didn't and this May, doctors told her she was in remission. She began another battle - another tests of sorts - to train for a triathlon, her second in nine years."I want this with everything in my body," said Sterger.It's a goal she thought she'd never reach after the burglary. But through social media, something remarkable happened.
