SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Major decisions that could boost - or deal a real blow - to Republican candidates running for state offices about to be made in San Diego.It's because the California G.O.P. Convention kicks off Friday at the Sheraton Harbor Island. About 1,000 Republican delegates will be voting on a variety of endorsements for this year's ballot.G.O.P. gubernatorial candidates like Travis Allen and John Cox will attend, hoping to earn enough delegate votes for the party's endorsement for this year's election.The party is focussed only on state offices and initiatives - such as repealing the gas tax, said Cynthia Bryant, the state party's executive director.This is San Diego's second major political convention leading up to the June primary. The Democrats held their statewide convention here in February - with a who's who of national politicians.It was also the site of major news when the party declined to endorse Sen. Dianne Feinstein in her bid for re-election.The big difference for Republicans is that the party will not be taking up major federal issues like gun rights and immigration, Bryant said. The state party also won't be adopting a platform. Instead, Republicans will be focussing on the big decisions in the state - like repealing the recent 12 cent per gallon gas tax hike.They'll also be endorsing candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor, and attorney general. Still, Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego, says a lot of the decisions made could shape whether the Republicans can recruit new members. "Is this going to be a red meat crowd that really responds only to the visceral issues of immigrations? Or is it going to be a more strategic party that responds to issues that could help Republicans expand their base?" Kousser said. There are some closely watched congressional elections in San Diego County, including who will replace Republican Congressman Darrell Issa in the 49th district, and whether G.O.P Rep. Duncan Hunter can defend his seat in the 50th. Those endorsements could come later on. The convention runs through Sunday. 2157

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was a chilly dilemma for a Pacific Beach restaurant: outdoor dining this winter without any patio heaters.The owners changed their outlook by appealing to their customers for help.After shutting down several times since the pandemic began, Break Point restaurant and bar, reopened in September. With the purple tier restrictions putting a halt to indoor dining, the owners turned to their new parklet to host their outdoor dining. But they had a problem."Keeping customers warm is a concern," said co-owner Amy Lee.Lee says when the winter temps arrive, they would need gas patio heaters to warm up customers, and they didn't have any."We found that they were pretty much sold out everywhere, and where they weren't sold out, prices were inflated to the point, that they were unaffordable," said Lee.One local supplier recently told ABC 10News they had a backlog of 200 orders.So Lee turned to social media, making an appeal for patio heaters on the Nextdoor app and community pages on Facebook.One of those appeals was seen by the Rynearson family. They had a backyard heater they hadn't used in awhile. Chance Rynearson, 14, says it was an easy call to lend the heater to Lee for as long as she needs it."COVID has really hit businesses hard. Just to help out is a good thing ... People should be helping each other during these times ... difficult but we should be able to get through it together," said Rynearson.In all, 17 people offered to either donate or lend a heater to Break Point, far more than Lee needed."It's like Christmas. It makes you wanna believe in Santa again ... It was that heartwarming," said Lee.Heartwarming and customer warming. Lee says this gives them a chance at survival this winter."I think it shows we should still have a lot of faith in our neighbors, in our community, and in humanity in general ... and that there's still a lot of good people out there. We are so grateful," said Lee.Lee says she offered many of the donors meals, but many didn't accept, saying that's 'not the reason' they wanted to help out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It sounds like a deal of a lifetime - guarantee a weeklong vacation at a coastal resort every year - for a one-time payment of 0.The county of San Diego is auctioning off nearly 900 timeshares, some in areas like Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and downtown for as little as 0. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. "It's an interest in real property."At the Solana Beach Sand Pebbles resort - starting bid 0 - annual fees range from 4 to 2 depending on unit size. And some of the timeshares don't include some parts of the year. Allison Russell, the resort's property manager, said it's vital people do their due diligence before buying. She said the resort books up early, and owners need to reserve their week sometimes far in advance.Eaton said timeshares can work if you plan to go to the same resort year after year, but with so many options now available - including airbnb - it may be best to keep that 0.The county auction is online and runs from May 4 to May 9. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was more than a decade after two-year-old Jahi Turner disappeared.His mother, Tameka, had been posted on deployment with the U.S. Navy in 2002. Step-dad Tieray Jones claimed the boy vanished while playing with other kids at a park in Golden Hill, while Jones was buying a drink at a vending machine.Police thought otherwise, suspicious that Jones had severely punished the boy for bed-wetting and he died.
