Community Health Centers that serve hundreds of thousands of San Diegans are now dealing with millions of dollars in federal cuts.So far, they've instituted a hiring freeze and put expansion plans on hold. But if Congress doesn't act soon, those cuts could force the centers to reduce hours starting in January. "We pray that it won't," said Giselle Brown, who goes to the La Maestra Community Health Center in City Heights for basic medical care. "People would be left out, they wouldn't be getting the proper help or care that they need."La Maestra is part of the Health Center Partners of Southern California network, consisting of 17 low-cost clinics in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside Counties.The Federal Government subsidizes centers like it around the country with about billion a year. But about 70 percent of that is expiring, and the first funds disappeared Sept. 30. Congress has not renewed it.However, the House is scheduled to vote Friday on a bipartisan bill that would extend the funds for two years. Vernita Todd, a V.P. for the health center system of Southern California, says she's concerned the bill may not get out of the Senate - and the January deadline of reducing services is only getting closer. Brown says she hopes the funding is restored, not just for her, but for her community.    1376

Country music star and philanthropist Dolly Parton is being credited for saving the life of a young co-star while filming her latest Christmas movie."We were on set, and I was at the hot chocolate station, and they said 'Go back to your beginning positions,'" Talia Hill, age 9, said in an interview with Inside Edition. "So, there is a vehicle moving, and I was walking, and then somebody grabbed me and pulled me back and I looked up and it was Dolly Parton."Hill said she was in shock.“And she said ‘"Well, I am an angel, you know,’” a reference to Parton’s role in the Netflix film “Christmas on the Square.”“She hugged me and shook me and said, 'I saved your life!'" Hill said. "And my mom's going, 'Yes, you did, Dolly Parton. COVINGTON, Ky. -- At least three Northern Kentucky school districts will be closed Monday after state lawmakers rushed through a pension overhaul plan.Covington Independent, Boone County and Kenton County schools confirmed they'll be closed April 2.Covington spokesperson Deb Vance said 180 of 271 teachers called to say they're taking a personal day on Monday. The day will have to be made up later, she said. In Boone County, Superintendent Randy Poe said a day off will let teachers and families travel to Frankfort."Drastic times call for drastic action," Poe said in a letter to parents. "Although closing school is the last thing anyone wants to do, one of the reasons for this decision to close school is because educators feel one of their main responsibilities is to advocate for the children of the Commonwealth."The bill passed Thursday night preserves benefits for current retirees. Most benefits for current workers would also be preserved, but sick days would be capped after this year and will not be applied toward retirement. Some teachers would also have to increase the amount they pay to fund retiree health.However, future teachers would not be guaranteed a set pension when they retire, and would instead use a hybrid 401(k) plan that requires them to contribute more. 1298

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has recently taken to speaking out against police violence and racial injustice. Mayfield took his activism further, writing a letter Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt and members of the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board, seeking the commutation of Julius Jones, a man on death row fighting to prove his innocence in a 1999 murder.Jones was 19 years old at the time of his arrest. He was a student at the University of Oklahoma going for an engineering degree and working towards a basketball scholarship.In the summer of 1999, a 45-year-old man named Paul Howell was shot and killed during a carjacking in Edmond, Oklahoma. Jones was the prime suspect in his death, despite his claims he was home playing games and eating dinner with his family.Howell’s family was inside of his car when he was shot and killed, and described the suspect as a Black man wearing a stocking cap and a bandana across his face with “half an inch of hair” sticking out from the cap. Jones’ hair was shaved down at the time of the shooting.Jones’ co-defendant, Christopher Jordan, is believed to have set Jones up for the crime. After pleading guilty, he served 15 years in prison and is now free. Jones was sentenced to the death penalty and 40 years.While the DNA results from a bandana and a weapon found in the house have been used both as evidence of Jones’ guilt and his innocence, it was what took place during the trial that has caused celebrities and organizations—including John Legend, Kim Kardashian, Black Lives Matter, and most recently Mayfield— to speak up and fight for Jones’ commutation, stating that racial discrimination fueled the conviction of what they believe to be an innocent man.In addition to claims of racially-fueled language from officers handling Jones’ case during the court proceedings, the state dismissed all prospective Black jurors but one. One of the 12 jurors who convicted Jones and sentenced him to death confessed that another juror described the trial as “a waste of time” and said that “they should just take the n***** out and shoot him behind the jail.”Jones has maintained his innocence for nearly 20 years."As God is my witness, I was not involved in any way in the crimes that led to Howell being shot and killed," Jones said in his clemency report. "I have spent the past 20 years on death row for a crime I did not commit, did not witness and was not at."Mayfield, who played football at Oklahoma University, wrote the letter on behalf of Jones a few weeks ago, asking for the pardon and parole board, as well as the governor, to review the commutation application with “fairness and compassion.” 2670

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Coronado bookstore that’s been a fixture of the landscape for nearly three decades will be able to move a few doors down thanks to a decision by the City Council. In 2018, a developer bought up nearly a whole block of Orange Avenue and Bay Books was only paying a fraction of market rent. Owner Angelica Muller told 10News in February that the store was considering a move down the block, but would have to sell coffee and pastries to stay in business.
