INDIANAPOLIS -- A man's quick reaction spared him from serious injury or even death after a chunk of concrete was thrown from an overpass on I-465 and shattered his windshield.Alan Cox was driving his Honda SUV on I-465 northbound Wednesday afternoon. He said he saw three men on the overpass as he approached the Pendleton Pike exit. Cox said he could tell they were up to no good, especially when he noticed one throwing something into moving traffic and in his direction."I knew he was going to throw something so I veered to the left a little. He nailed me. If I veered over to the left -- dead center to the chest," Cox said.A chunk of concrete hit Cox's windshield on passenger side and left the interior of his SUV covered in glass"People get killed. I'm fortunate to be here. It was a tough few months for the Cincinnati Zoo's beloved behemoth: Henry the Hippo had lost his appetite, only to regain it and lose it again; fought off a serious infection; and his kidneys appeared to be shutting down.The 36-year-old hippo — father to Fiona, whose underweight birth made her famous on social media — died today.Veterinarians and care staff had been trying to bring him back to health, but he continued to slide in recent weeks."We're doing everything we can to keep him comfortable," the zoo said in a recent blog post.According to the zoo, the median life expectancy for a Nile hippo is 35. He came to Cincinnati from Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri.His declining condition came near the tail-end of a pretty joyous year for hippo staff: They nurtured Fiona into childhood after she born six weeks early and half a calf's normal birth weight. The entire hippo bloat -- Henry, Fiona and mother Bibi -- were all reunited just a few months ago. 1013

INDIANAPOLIS -- Former Roncalli High School students say the controversy brewing after a guidance counselor says she was asked to resign over her same-sex marriage sheds light on a culture of intolerance at the Indianapolis school that has been going on for years. In 2012 after two students took their own lives, classmates say they formed an after-school group called "Rebels 4 Acceptance." Some of them were dealing with bullying issues, some with mental health issues and others issues involving their LGBT status. "It definitely would not have been safe for one of my classmates to come out, not entirely anyway," said Andria McHugh, class of 2013. "They may have been fearful if they did. Just of judgment."The group's founding members say it was meant to be a safe place for all students to find acceptance. The group met every few weeks to talk about what they were going through and how they could make school more inclusive for everybody. But after less than a year, the group says their club was shut down by school administrators. "They had seen it as encouraging homosexual behavior,' said Kendall Wood, class of 2014. Counselor Shelly Fitzgerald has been placed on administrative leave after she says someone sought out her marriage certificate showing she was married to another woman and gave it to the school. In a statement released Monday, Roncalli has said the expectations and teachings of the Catholic Church are clearly defined in employee contracts and job descriptions. Fitzgerald says she has been overwhelmed by the support she's seeing from the community and her students."I mean, it's a great message for my daughter more importantly than anything," said Fitzgerald. "It's a great message for our students and our community at Roncalli because it's what we've taught them all along. Be kind to each other, take care of each other, be welcoming to each other and do it with Jesus in your heart."WRTV has reached out to Roncalli High School administrators and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis for comment about the students' claims and about Fitzgerald's status with the school. In just the past two days, two young athletes have been rushed to the hospital during sports practice. Just outside of Dallas, a 13-year-old student collapsed at football practice and later died. In Pennsylvania, a teen remains in coma after suffering a serious head injury.  The NOW’s investigative reporter Jace Larson obtained a new state-by-state ranking, showing how well states do at preventing and reducing the number of children who have a sudden emergency, while playing middle and high school sports.Samantha Scarneo headed up the study, which ranks how well states protect youth athletes. The University of Connecticut's Korey Stringer Institute looked at whether states or lawmakers mandate policies for athletes, who get suddenly sick. 766
