BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese military official said Tuesday that China's military hardware development is not aimed at any other country.Guan Youfei, deputy director of Foreign Affairs Office of the Defense Ministry, made the remarks while responding to a question on the reported test flight of J-20 stealth fighter jet."The development of China's military hardware is not aimed at any other country or any specific target and the timing was a matter of routine working arrangements," said Guan.Weaponry was developed to safeguard China's national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, and to adapt to the world's military changes, as well as the constant development of new weapons, he said.Guan denied the test flight was timed deliberately to coincide with U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates' China visit.China would always take the path of peaceful development, and adhere to the national defense policy, which was defensive in nature, he said.China would not seek hegemony, military expansion, an arms race, nor pose a threat to any country, Guan said.
BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- A senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) vowed Friday to enhance bilateral ties with Estonia.Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made this pledge during his meeting with visiting President of the Parliament of the Republic of Estonia Ene Ergma in Beijing.Li praised the recent growth of relations and cooperation between the two nations, saying China values its ties with Estonia and regards the country as an important partner in the Baltic Sea region.China would work to increase the mutual political trust with Estonia, encourage the exchange and communications between the two business communities and strengthen the humanitarian exchange between the two peoples, Li said.Li recalled his visit to Estonia last September and applauded the close contact established between the CPC and the Estonian political parties, expressing his hope that the two sides could step up exchanges and cooperation based on the principles of independence, equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.He also briefed the Estonian guests about China's latest economic and social developments.Ergma, who was visiting Beijing at the invitation of Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo, said Estonia attaches great importance to its relations with China and is expecting to expand cooperation with China in fields such as biology and information technology.The Estonian parliamentary delegation arrived in China on Wednesday. SUZHOU, Jiangsu, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has announced that the special campaign to crackdown on prostitution has been effective, with cases of prostitution and obscene performances in entertainment venues in October dropping 18.4 percent on a month-on month basis.The campaign in the latter half of the year attached increased importance to the investigation and punishment of the organizers of prostitution.The campaign also targeted business operators and the "protective umbrellas" - sometimes local government officials - that allow prostitution to happen, according to a document released at a ministry work conference in Suzhou Saturday.More effort must be made to educate and rehabilitate women involved in the prostitution and obscene performance cases, the document said.According to the document, the MPS sent 27 groups of inspectors to 651 entertainment business venues in four municipalities and 20 provinces during the campaign. At some 381 of the venues, cases of prostitution or obscene performance were discovered.In July, the ministry sent 10 inspection groups to eight cities in Jilin, Shanghai, Guangdong, Hainan, Sichuan and Shaanxi, to raid 10 entertainment venues, resulting in the arrest of 370 suspects.In the following three months, the ministry and local police solved 54 major cases, the document said.
MOSCOW, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- A handover certificate on China providing Russia with emergency humanitarian aid has been inked in Moscow between the two sides, the Chinese embassy in Russia announced on Thursday.The document was signed by Chinese Ambassador to Russia Li Hui and Vladimir Puchkov, State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Russian Emergencies Situations Ministry on Wednesday.On behalf of the Russian government, Puchkov thanked the Chinese government and people for providing aid and support to Russia on the abnormal summer wildfires.Li spoke highly of the close cooperation between China and Russia in recent years on emergency rescue and humanitarian aid, and expressed hope that China could further strengthen cooperation and exchange views with Russia in this regard in the future.The humanitarian aid delivered by the Chinese side on Aug. 20 was worth three million U.S. dollars, including fire extinguishers, compressors, fire-fighting suits and gas masks.Statistics showed that the summer wildfires have cost Russia 15 billion dollars.
