The unemployment rate has dipped below 4 percent for the first time since 2000.The United States added 164,000 jobs in April, the Labor Department reported Friday. That was slightly below what economists expected. Unemployment dropped to 3.9 percent, the lowest since December 2000."The employment situation continues to surprise everyone," said Robert Frick, chief economist with Navy Federal Credit Union. "Getting down to 3.9 is quite a marker."Wages grew 2.6 percent from a year earlier. That was also slightly below expectations.The report indicates another month of solid job growth for an economy that has been expanding for almost nine years — the second-longest streak on record.Hiring gains in April were broad. Professional and business services added 54,000 jobs, health care added 24,000, and manufacturing posted an increase of 24,000 jobs.The mining sector added 8,000 jobs, extending its gains. Employment in mining has risen by 86,000 since October 2016.The wage growth number seemed unlikely to alarm Wall Street, which has been worried in recent months about inflation. Stock futures were little changed after the report came out.Inflation is closing in on the Federal Reserve's 2% target, gasoline is heading toward a gallon, and companies are reporting cost pressures. Faster inflation could force the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates more quickly than planned.Frick believes unemployment will keep falling as businesses offer more attractive wages and benefits to fill openings."There's still hundreds of thousands of more people who will enter the workforce," he said. The University of San Diego's head men's basketball coach Lamont Smith was arrested Sunday in the Bay Area and is facing three domestic violence charges, according to public records released by the San Francisco Sheriff's Department.Allen Lamont Smith, 42, was arrested at Oakland International Airport prior to the USD basketball team's flight back to San Diego following a 64-61 win over the University of San Francisco in last night's regular season finale.Officers were dispatched to the team hotel near Union Square late last night on reports of a domestic violence disturbance.The victim told police she was intimately involved with Smith. She was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.USD released a statement to Scripps station KGTV in San Diego, stating "We are aware of the report of allegations related to Lamont Smith. The US Coast Guard was searching Friday for a passenger who reportedly went overboard from a cruise ship about 35 miles south of the Florida Keys.The 26-year-old man was on the Carnival Victory cruise ship below Islamorada when the incident occurred, officials said.Vance Gulliksen, a spokesman for Carnival Cruise Line, said the vessel was headed back to Miami, its home port, when the man disappeared."All appropriate authorities, including the United States Coast Guard, were notified, and the ship has joined in the search and rescue efforts," Gulliksen said in a statement.Carnival Victory was completing a four-day cruise.A Coast Guard plane, helicopter and cutter were involved in the search. 707

Milwaukee and Dane counties finished their recounts over the weekend and results added to Biden's 20,600 vote margin over President Donald Trump.The president's campaign has repeatedly alleged fraud in the state's election, though it has not presented any proof. The election officials for both counties who did recounts said there was no fraud uncovered in the process.The WEC confirmation of the results opened a five-day window for the president's campaign to file a lawsuit.The campaign filed a lawsuit Tuesday morning, in an attempt to overturn results by disqualifying as many as 200,000 ballots."What we had is an abuse of the absentee process, dramatically in Dane and Milwaukee County,” said Jim Troupis, attorney for the Trump Campaign.The suit is specifically seeking to dismiss absentee ballots where the clerks' offices "inserted missing information,” people cast ballots "claiming Indefinite Confinement status" even If they "no longer qualified,” and absentee ballots "improperly cast or received at ‘Democracy in the Park’ events,” which were held in Madison.The lawsuit also targets many in-person absentee voters who the Trump campaign claims did not follow Wisconsin law which requires "voters submit a written application.""We introduce evidence in the proceeding we introduced evidence that they in fact followed the law.
