SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Five dogs died during a fire at a former kennel in Lakeside early Sunday morning. The fire broke out on the 8700 block of Winter Gardens Boulevard around 3 a.m., according to the Lakeside Fire Protection District. The house used to be a functioning kennel, but the woman who lives in the home was either pet sitting or storing the animal for residents at the time of the fire, the district says. RELATED: Mother, father killed in Logan Heights house fireA total of eight dogs were inside the home when the blaze sparked. Five of the dogs and a parrot died in the blaze. Crews say the fire started downstairs in the two-story home. The department says the age of the home made it difficult to fight the blaze. “Old structures are lath and plaster, they’re difficult to fight fires because the fires are get deep in the walls. So it takes a long time to put those out. There is a lot of stuff inside of the home as well. So moving hoselines inside of the house is very difficult as well,” according to Bernard Molloy with Lakeside Fire. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of businesses shut down Friday after a series of water main breaks severely damaged their buildings. RELATED: Sinkhole reported on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley areaBird Rock Coffee Roasters put the brewing on hold when water came rushing in. "All of a sudden the water started spewing up from the middle of the street," said Co-owner Jeff Taylor. "We had six or eight inches probably busting up against the windows, it started seeping up here underneath the doors actually."One of four water main breaks on Thursday was just outside their coffee shop in Morena. Taylor estimates about ,000 worth of damage. He says his crew acted quickly and kept it from getting worse. "We had sandbags blocking off the inside of the windows to keep water from coming in, it still came in, but I think he saved a lot of product and damage to the store by his efforts."The breaks in Morena flooded business and left about 60 customers without water. Another break on 1-8 left drivers stranded for hours after a sinkhole opened up on the asphalt. Overall, not a great day for a lot of people. "Oh, and by the way, somebody hit my car yesterday, so it was a fun day yesterday," said Taylor. He even started damage control by calling contractors and insurance companies before finding out the city would help him. Now, they're working on drying up so they can start roasting again.  "It really is just life, what are you gonna do. There's nothing to be upset about," Taylor said. "Really you just take it one by one, you deal with it you answer the questions you solve the problems, and you move on to the next one."Taylor said he hopes to be back open brewing coffee on Monday.  1764

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Defense Secretary James Mattis has signed the extension of troops at the border, a defense official confirmed to ABC News. The extension was requested by the Department of Homeland Security after hundreds of migrants rushed the San Ysidro Port of Entry in a show of force. The move means the troops will be extended through January 31. Two officials told ABC News it’s unclear how many of the 5,600 troops currently at the border will be extended. The source also said there will be a flow-in of new forces as other units flow out because their specialties are no longer needed. Engineering units were named as one of the specialties no longer needed at the southern border. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Extended construction work next to Friars Road has drivers wondering when the Mission Valley street will be back to normal.What is normally a four-lane road is now two, as SANDAG completes an million project. Crews are taking out a bridge with one track on it and replacing it with three bridges and four tracks. Two tracks will serve the Coaster and heavy freight trains. The other tracks are for the blue line trolley to La Jolla. “Every day that I have to pass this, it's just an eyesore,” said Katherine Whitley, who has spent two years driving through construction. “It clogs traffic. Everybody knows Friars Road has grown and grown and this isn't the right place for this to be.”RELATED: Gas main break prompts SR-163 closure in Mission ValleyBicyclists are also concerned about construction danger.“The cars going that way are passing me going 55 miles an hour about three feet away from me. So it feels pretty sketchy,” said Greg Zackowski.SANDAG said it is doing everything it can to minimize the impact of construction. The equipment can’t be put in the San Diego River because of the environmental impact.
