The GI Film Festival documentary, Homemade, aims to start a conversation on taking better care of our returning veterans. Staff Sgt. Adam Sorensen was injured in 2010 by an explosive device in Afghanistan; 100 pieces of shrapnel pierced his body, and he required two surgeries.He could no longer serve in a combat role and spent the next couple of years as an instructor. The documentary follows Sorensen as he navigates civilian life and the effects of Post Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury, and addiction on his marriage, family, and work.Filmmakers Danielle Bernstein and Jason Maris included scenes that can be hard to watch. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Get ready for sunny days at SeaWorld this summer, as the cast of a television favorite comes to San Diego.SeaWorld will host Sesame Street favorites including Elmo, Cookie Monster, and others with themed floats, music, and two performances along the parade route during the Sesame Street Party Parade.The parade will feature 10 massive floats depicting the areas kids know and love, like Mr. Hooper's Store and the Count's Castle.More than 20 dancers will jump and jive alongside Elmo down the parade route, along with a cast of furry friends.During the two mid-parade shows, performers will jump rope, hula hoop, and groove to guests' delight. One show will star Rosita, a Sesame Street favorite known for her guitar skills. The parade can be seen on weekends running from May 25 - Sept. 1 at the park. 830

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For 10 days, San Diegans who enjoy the city's flair for craft beer will celebrate by, well, drinking beer.San Diego Beer Week showcases the county's more than 150 independent craft breweries from Nov. 1-10. Participating breweries host more than 500 events, including special tastings, food pairings, beer releases, and education sessions that introduce fans to new styles and even the brewers themselves.Beer Week officially kicks off during Guild Fest, which benefits the San Diego Brewers Guild and I Love A Clean San Diego. Attendees are treated to unlimited tasters from more than 60 San Diego County breweries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Former San Diego deputy Richard Fischer has been released from jail months after being sentenced to nearly four years in jail after pleading guilty to multiple assault charges. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Fischer was released earlier in May on custody credits. "On May 15, 2020 the San Diego County Sheriff's Department received an order from the Superior Court setting forth the custody credits for Richard Fischer," the department said. Fischer was sentenced to 44 months in jail in December of 2019, followed by 16 months of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to four felony counts of assault under the color of authority, two misdemeanor counts of assault under the color of authority, and one misdemeanor count of false imprisonment. The charges stemmed from attacks on 16 women, City News Service previously reported. Fischer was accused of assaulting women while on duty between 2015 and 2017. The victims said Fischer groped, hugged or tried to kiss them. Fischer originally faced 20 felony and misdemeanor charges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Following several years of record-breaking fires around California, the state’s department of insurance is letting residents know they have options if their insurance gets dropped. Under Proposition 103, a law approved by voters in 1988, insurers are required to file rate changes with the California Department of Insurance. Although the department doesn’t set rates, state law requires that insurers’ rates are based on a demonstrated risk of loss. New laws that both took effect in 2019 also offer some protection. One of the laws specifies that homeowners living in a declared wildfire disaster area or adjacent zip codes receive one year of protection from non-renewal. The state also extended protections against non-renewal for people who suffer a total loss during a fire to two automatic renewals or 24 months. If you find yourself in the middle of a non-renewal, the department lists specific rights California residents have: The notice of non-renewal must be sent at least 45 days prior to policy expiration. That notice of non-renewal must contain: (1) the reason or reasons for the non-renewal; (2) the telephone number of the insurer's representatives who handle consumer inquiries or complaints; and (3) a statement indicating that if the consumer has contacted the insurer to discuss the non-renewal and remains unsatisfied, the policyholder may have the matter reviewed by the Department. The insurance company must determine whether to renew or non-renew based upon its underwriting guidelines, which must be objective, have a substantial relationship to the risk of loss, and be applied consistently among insureds in the particular group being non-renewed.For anyone who can’t find insurance, the department has another option. The FAIR plan is available to all homeowners as a last option for coverage. The maximum limit written by the plan on residential property is ,500,000. According to the department, insurance companies use different tools and maps to determine high-risk areas around the state.
