SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 140 women, children and their family members will live inside Golden Hall for at least the next three months.The theater's second floor concourse will serve as a temporary bridge shelter while the city installs a new shelter tent at the corner of 17th and Imperial. Father Joe's Villages will manage the shelter, which is to serve as a transition for homeless families to find permanent housing and get on their feet. A recent city report found about 1,500 people were sleeping on San Diego's streets. The families moving into Golden Hall had been living in a bridge tent shelter at 14th and Commercial. That shelter is being removed to make way for a Father Joe's 14-story affordable housing tower. Golden Hall will have on-site residential staff and security 24 hours a day. Deacon Jim Vargas, president of Father Joe's Villages, said Golden Hall's location will present challenges when it comes to delivering key services out of Father Joe's main campus across downtown. He said these next few months will be a good test to see if something longer term could work. "I personally would love, in addition to the tent, to have some brick and mortar," said Vargas. "And if this facility works out well we'd be happy to continue as a service provider."The city is installing the new tent at 17th and Commercial over the next few months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating the death of a man who was found with stab wounds in a gas station parking lot in Webster.San Diego police said they received a 911 call just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday regarding a possible stabbing victim in the 4300 block of Home Avenue.Officers arrived to find a 31-year-old Black man with “apparent trauma to his upper torso,” according to SDPD officials.The victim was eventually taken to the hospital for emergency surgery, but he later died from his injuries. His name was not released.SDPD Homicide Unit investigators learned the stabbing occurred in an area of the 4600 block of Home Avenue, and the victim was able to drive himself to the parking lot of an Arco ampm gas station, where he was found.Police said the only information available regarding the suspected attacker is a Black male wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt.Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1015

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nestled off of Camino Del Rio West in the Midway District, the Body Shop sits between a Navis Pack and Ship site and the "Les Girls" adult entertainment club on Riley Street. The Body Shop, a strip club at 3776 Riley Street, welcomed customers for five decades before it closed last December. This week, Rock Church announced they'll be moving in. Rock Church has five campuses across San Diego County. They have a school and now, they have plans for the property in the Midway District. They told 10News the purchase is about more than repurposing a strip club - it's about transforming the neighborhood. "We thought it was a great idea because we know the pain that goes on in that building," said Miles McPherson, pastor at Rock Church. "Not just the women, but the men who go there and their families.”The church’s main campus on Rosecrans is roughly a mile and a half away from the new property. "We don’t know what we're going to do with the building, we just know what it won’t be used for," McPherson said. For decades, parents have explained to their kids why there's a huge sign that says 'nude girls' in their neighborhood, he said. Soon, it won't be necessary."It would be nice to put 'Rock Church' on top of that billboard, but that's another step," he said. "We’ll get to that. But you know the people in that community have been looking at that building for 50 years, and hopefully we can put something more positive in that building.”In addition to taking over the building, McPherson said the church plans to do outreach in the community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Neighbors woke up to find disturbing graffiti in their Hillcrest neighborhood.For Lauren Matley, it was hard to hold back tears, as she scraped away the red paint on her car window. This was just one of many vehicles that were painted on along 6th Avenue in Hillcrest. Someone also painted on the side of houses and on a garage.Doctor Barry Kaplan was walking his dog when he noticed the graffiti and he called police. "Several of my grandparents died in the Holocaust. So, for me to see this, this reminds me of Nazi Germany. It’s very offensive," Kaplan said.Though Matley doesn’t know if this was a random act or meant to be antisemitic, she says it hits too close to home being a member of the Jewish community."You wake up and this is what you look forward to? The black community would look forward to? The Jewish community would look forward to? The Muslim community looks forward to?" Matley said.Police say after the reports are written this case will be handed to an investigator. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Thursday released a picture of the vehicle used in a deadly hit-and-run in Logan Heights last week. 52-year-old Maria Estrada Romero was hit while walking near Cesar Chavez Parkway on her way to a bus stop on November 15. Two days later, she died at the hospital. Police say the driver didn’t call 911, or stop to render aid to Romero. RELATED: Woman critically injured in Logan Heights crashThe vehicle used in the hit-and-run is described as a 1997 to 2004 white Ford F-150 truck with stock wheels. 10News spoke with family members about the crash Wednesday. Romero was a mother of five and grandmother of five. "Always really happy, an outgoing person," said Brianda Ramos.The family says they rushed to the hospital after learning Romero was struck by a hit-and-run driver. Basically left her right there," said Ramos.Family members say Romero had become famous in the area for selling tamales at parks and schools in Southcrest and Bay Terraces.
