VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) - The 12-year-old survivor of a plane crash in Valley Center is praising her uncle, the pilot who died in the crash.A smiling photo of Raquel Contreras was taken moments before her uncle, Peter Bierle, a seasoned pilot, took her up in his single-engine, experimental aircraft on an early Sunday evening. They were above the home of her friend for a birthday flyover when it happened. More than two weeks after the crash, Contreras spoke to us from her hospital room. She says some neighbors got an early warning."The plane hadn't even crashed, and they were getting ready because they heard engine failure," said Contreras.RELATED: Pilot killed, 12-year-old girl badly injured in small plane crash in Valley CenterA traumatized Contreras didn't want to talk about the crash, but her family says her uncle told her to, "Get down low and hold on."Witnesses saw the plane dive toward the yard, away from buildings, before it crashed."I want to honor Uncle Peter. It's amazing what he did, and I wouldn't be here if he didn't land and crash like he did," said Contreras.Bierle died at the scene. Dozens of neighbors rushed to the plane, burning fuel nearby."Just want to thank everyone on Palomar Vista Drive ... Amazing how everyone came together in the end," Contreras said.Contreras was cut out of seat belt and rescued. That seat belt was a 4-point harness belt, courtesy of her Aunt Connie."Right before the flight, she put in a new seat belt and checked my buckle," says Contreras.The last-minute addition may have saved her life. Two men who claim to be members of the Boogaloo Bois are facing federal charges for trying to help Hamas, a designated foreign terrorist organization.Boogaloo Bois and sub-groups are a loosely-connected group of people with violent anti-government stances; some members were seen at racial injustice demonstrations this summer wearing Hawaiian shirts and carrying long weapons. Many have a negative view of officers and government structure, advocating for the injury or death of police.Social media groups claiming to be part of the Boogaloo Bois movement have attracted attention this year and tens of thousands of members online, according to USA Today.Michael Solomon and Benjamin Teeter call themselves members of the group, and of a sub-group called Boojahideen, and were allegedly seen opening carrying firearms in residential neighborhoods in Minneapolis following the death of George Floyd and the demonstrations that followed.According to the FBI’s investigation of Solomon and Teeter, they “possessed firearms and substantial quantities of ammunition and that Solomon, Teeter, and other members of the Boogaloo Bois and Boojahideen discussed committing acts of violence against police officers and other targets in furtherance of the Boojahideen’s stated goal of overthrowing the government and replacing its police forces.” 1343

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of active duty service members and family members attended a memorial this Wednesday for a medic who mysteriously died this summer on a Southern California military base.Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner first broke the story a few weeks ago when 10News reported that he may have been killed by someone else. It’s been three months since HM3 Michael Vincent de Leon died but investigators still won’t release details on his death. He was a Navy corpsman, which is a medic, stationed at the Twentynine Palms Marine base in San Bernardino County.At the memorial service, rubber duckies were handed out to attendees. Ducks were Michael’s favorite type animal. "Michael was special. He thought that life was water and whatever life would throw at him, he was going to act like the duck and the water would fall right off," says Corpsman Michael Joseph Navarro. “If you needed something, he was there in a heartbeat,” explains former Corpsman Benjamin Clark. He and wife Lisa were some of Michael’s closest friends, yet they're nowhere near understanding his sudden death in August.Clark adds, “To this day, we [still] don't know a whole lot.” “I've been to memorials and I've always seen [them] through the viewfinder. Today, I was front row,” says Jose de Leon, Michael’s father. Jose is a former news photojournalist. He and the rest of the immediate family flew in from Texas for the memorial. 10News spoke with Jose via video chat last month. He had contacted 10News for help after claiming that the military stonewalled him from getting answers about his son's death. 10News learned from a source with close military ties that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) confirmed that Michael's death was being investigated as a homicide. It's a very different story than what the family says they were led to believe in the hours just after the death, when they say the word "suicide" came up from service members on base. After digging for information, Jose says he spoke to a service member who is close to the case. “I begged him, ‘Just tell me, did Michael pull the trigger or did someone else? There was a long pause and [then he said], ‘Mr. de Leon, someone else pulled the trigger,’” he explains.He says other service members who knew Michael said he was shot on base at another corpsman's going-away party in the military housing area. Days went by until, he says, an NCIS agent told him there was, in fact, a shooting on the base at a housing unit and other corpsmen were present.“We're not a vengeful family.
