At least five Marines assigned to the prestigious ceremonial Silent Drill Platoon in Washington were placed in pretrial confinement in recent days due to allegations they were involved in hazing at least one Marine at the unit, according to three defense officials.Hearings that took place this week resulted in one Marine being released from confinement but all could still face charges as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service has taken over the matter.The number of alleged victims has not been made public but the allegations came to light when one Marine came forward. Officials say a video had been made allegedly showing some Marines hitting at least one other Marine. It is not publicly known if that victim is the Marine who came forward.The platoon is a 24-man rifle unit that performs a drill exhibition largely in silence. It was founded in 1948 and performed for presidents and top officials as well as communities around the country tossing and spinning 10-pound M1 rifles with fixed bayonets.Multiple performances of the drill team were canceled in recent weeks due to the ongoing investigation, according to officials. The Marines did not publicize the reason for those cancellations or which performances were affected. The Marines said they began an investigation immediately at the unit, before turning it over the NCIS.The unit and the Marines are well known in the Washington community where they reside. In September they gained attention when several Marines ran to a nearby apartment complex to help rescue elderly residents when it caught fire. 1580

As the NFL continues to operate surrounded by an inferno of coronavirus cases throughout the US, the league told players to wear face coverings when not actively in the game, ESPN reported on Monday.The new requirements go into effect starting with Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day slate of games.According to ESPN’s report, the NFL is requiring masks to be worn unless a player has their helmet on and is in and or about to enter the game.The league is also telling coaches that face shields alone are no longer adequate, and face coverings or double-layer gaiters must be worn during games.The NFL is limiting the number of players on the travel roster to 62. The league is reducing the number of members of the media who can cover team practices.The NFL releases weekly figures of COVID-19 cases. The league tested a total of 7,856 tests to players and staff. Last week, there were 17 new COVID-19 cases reported among players, and 35 among coaches and staff. BALTIMORE — A doctor described as providing care to the "sickest patients" in Baltimore died of COVID-19, Mercy Medical Center said in a Facebook post.Dr. Joseph J. Costa, the chief of critical care at the hospital, was 56 years old."Joe was more than a trusted colleague; he was also a true friend to many. He dedicated his life and career to caring for the sickest patients. And when the global pandemic came down upon us, Joe selflessly continued his work on the front lines—deeply committed to serving our patients and our City during this time of great need. His memory will live on as an example to us all," the hospital said in a Facebook post.Costa joined Mercy in 1997 and became Chief of Critical Care in 2005. From 2010 to 2016 he served as an officer of the Mercy Medical Staff, culminating with his 2-year tenure as President of the Medical Staff."Joe was admired and respected among providers throughout the Baltimore region for his clinical expertise. AURORA, Colo. — When a fawn found itself in the basement foundation of a home under construction, it was firefighters to the rescue. On Sunday evening, residents in a southeast Aurora, Colorado neighborhood called on three of their neighbors, who happened to be off-duty members of South Metro Fire Rescue and the Thornton Fire Department, to rescue the young deer. When it was first lifted out of the basement foundation, it ran to the edge of the property and tried to squeeze through metal fencing, but couldn't fit. The firefighters gave the animal another boost over the fence and it bounded away, said a spokesperson with SMFR.  692

Average rates on long-term mortgages continue to fall to new record lows, as the key 30-year loan dropped below 3% for the first time in 50 years. The stagnant economic recovery in the face of the coronavirus pandemic is keeping inflation tamped down despite pent-up homebuying demand. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac says the average rate on the 30-year home loan fell this week to 2.98% from 3.03% last week. These are the lowest levels since Freddie Mac began tracking averages in 1971. The rate averaged 3.81% a year ago.In their update, Freddie Mac says the low rates has led to increased homebuyer demand. Meanwhile, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association, refinancing applications increased recently, about 12 percent in the last week. However, Freddie Mac warns that with an increase in coronavirus cases, the economy can stagnate and cause temporary job layoffs to possibly become permanent. The average rate on the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage declined to 2.48% from 2.51%, from last week. 1008
