SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Crews are clearing out a large homeless encampment hidden out of sight. It’s so big, it’s taking crews three days to clear the area in Webster. Trash, soiled clothes and old food containers is only a small list of what the eight man crew had to clean up. Stephen Driver, with the Alpha Project Abatement team says the area is, “really filthy. There’s urine bottles all over the place, buckets with human feces, dead animals. You name it.”The Alpha Project Abatement team cleared a stretch of Federal Boulevard. The homeless camp was tucked away near a flood channel. Driver says most of these camps are not easily seen. The Alpha Project crew is contracted with the City of San Diego. They work with the city’s Environmental Services Department to clear the mess. “Sometimes the people are here but usually they’re packing up and leaving once we get here,” says Driver. Police were on hand to make sure crews were safe. The city gave the people living there about a week’s notice about the cleanup.The Alpha Project offers a number of resources for the homeless, including a bridge shelter in downtown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Chicano history will be celebrated in San Diego this week at one of the city's most historic parks.On April 20, the Logan Heights community will celebrate the 49th annual Chicano Park Day at the famed park underneath the Coronado Bridge. The free festival brings together community members annually for art, education, entertainment, and honoring Chicano culture and the park.This year theme will be "Danzantes, Protectors of Our Traditions and Chicano Park, 500 Years of Anti-Colonial Struggle."Performances are scheduled by a lineup of traditional and cultural dance groups and one of the largest Aztec Indigenous dance performances by Danza Azteca Calpulli Mexihca. In addition to dancing, kids art workshops, speakers, and more than 325 classic lowrider cars and bikes will be on display. Attendees can also visit various arts and crafts, and informational booths throughout the colorful park.And, of course, there's the food, which will be sprinkled throughout the park at various booths.The event comes a couple days before the official establishment of Chicano Park on April 22, 1970, by activists. The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and became a National Historic Landmark in 2016.The park is known for an array of colorful murals lining the Coronado Bay Bridge's legs that make up the Chicano Park Monumental Murals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Boulevard Fitness in University Heights is open for business, with a line of people wrapped around the building waiting to go inside to workout on Tuesday, even though they’re not supposed to be open.Last week, San Diego County Supervisors said the county would be cracking down on businesses that violate public health orders put into place due to the coronavirus pandemic.A gym owner in Ramona was recently charged with several misdemeanors for staying open for indoor workouts. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office said Peter San Nicolas, owner of Ramona Fitness Center, faces five charges that each carry ,000 fines.However, at Boulevard Fitness, staff members told ABC 10News they’ve had visits from police telling them they should not be open, but nothing more.The gym on El Cajon Boulevard is limiting the number of people inside and increasing cleaning and other measures to try to limit the risk of potential virus exposure to gym members.A San Diego Police Department spokesperson said officers are responding to complaints about businesses that are open when they’re not supposed to be, but police are -- at this point -- only educating businesses that may be in violation of the health order and not physically forcing any shutdowns.San Nicolas is holding a rally in Ramona Tuesday night in hopes of getting the word out that small businesses, including gyms like his, are still trying desperately to survive -- even if, in some cases, it means facing charges to stay open. 1526

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews quickly put out a brush fire that erupted near Interstate 15 in the Rainbow area of north San Diego County.The fire was reported in an area off I-15, near Old Hwy 395 and Rainbow Valley Boulevard, just after 1:30 p.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.According to Cal Fire San Diego, the fire burned at least one acre with a moderate rate of spread. By 2:15 p.m., crews were able to douse the blaze before it spread any further.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 525

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As coronavirus cases increase across the country, there is a concern about staffing in hospitals across Southern California.Not only are hospitals dealing with patients they typically see during this time of year, COVID-19 patients are adding stress to thinning resources.“If these trends continue, we’re going to have to much more dramatic—arguably drastic—action,” said Governor Gavin Newsom during a news conference on Monday.Currently, 74 percent of ICU beds are occupied in Southern California. State health officials protect it to be at 107 percent capacity by December 24th.“I have a guarded concern about the direction that we’re moving in,” said nurse practitioner Samantha Gambles Farr of the rising cases.Gambles Farr said she is not only worried about staffing numbers, but also the physical and mental health of her colleagues. “The staffing issues have always been something that we've dealt with in the ICU because of the critical acuteness of our patients and the burnout of staff,” she said. ‘In these unprecedented times with COVID in the pandemic, what we're seeing is that nurses are picking up a lot more overtime and shifts.”Early in the pandemic, the state created the California Health Corps. It asked for those with health care experience to help during the COVID-19 outbreak. Thousands, including retired workers and nursing students, volunteered to help.
