VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) - The 12-year-old survivor of a plane crash in Valley Center is praising her uncle, the pilot who died in the crash.A smiling photo of Raquel Contreras was taken moments before her uncle, Peter Bierle, a seasoned pilot, took her up in his single-engine, experimental aircraft on an early Sunday evening. They were above the home of her friend for a birthday flyover when it happened. More than two weeks after the crash, Contreras spoke to us from her hospital room. She says some neighbors got an early warning."The plane hadn't even crashed, and they were getting ready because they heard engine failure," said Contreras.RELATED: Pilot killed, 12-year-old girl badly injured in small plane crash in Valley CenterA traumatized Contreras didn't want to talk about the crash, but her family says her uncle told her to, "Get down low and hold on."Witnesses saw the plane dive toward the yard, away from buildings, before it crashed."I want to honor Uncle Peter. US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said the United States was prepared to sustain its pressure on Syria after a night of military strikes meant to cripple the country's ability to use chemical weapons, as Russia accused Washington of "hooliganism" and a major breach of international law."The time for talk ended last night," Haley told the UN Security Council. "We are prepared to sustain this pressure, if the Syrian regime is foolish enough to test our will."The United States is locked and loaded," she said. "When our President draws a red line, our President enforces a red line."Haley blasted Russia for protecting Syria and said Moscow has emboldened Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime to continue its attacks, while the Russian ambassador to the UN said Washington had embarked on an "illegal military adventure." 850

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis says the Christmas season provides reason for hope amid the difficulties of the coronavirus pandemic. Francis noted during his Sunday blessing that the Vatican’s Christmas tree had gone up this week in St. Peter’s Square, and work is underway to build the life-size Nativity scene next to it. Francis pointed to the tree from his studio window over the square and said such symbols of Christmas “are signs of hope, especially in this difficult period.” He urged the faithful to recall the true meaning of Christmas and lend a hand to the neediest. He said, “there’s no pandemic, there’s no crisis that can extinguish this light.” 670
