Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter won re-election in the 50th Congressional District, despite facing federal charges of campaign fraud. With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Hunter had just over 54 percent of the vote against Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar."He's strong on the 2nd Amendment, he's strong on our defense, he's very pro-military," said Dan Summers, a Ramona resident who voted for Hunter and celebrated at his campaign event Tuesday night. Hunter did not make himself available to the media, and in a statement said he looked forward to representing the 50th Congressional District on issues that matter to them."For 10 years, I have consistently and unapologetically focused on rebuilding the military, protecting the border, which includes a border wall, cutting taxes, supporting our veterans, creating small business jobs and economic development, upholding the 2nd Amendment and protecting the sanctity of life," Hunter said in the statement. Hunter's statement did not address the criminal charges, which he and his wife Margaret pleaded not guilty to in Federal Court earlier this year. "For example, he were to only get one year he could technically stay in and when he gets out in a year have a year left on his term."Under California law, the governor would have 14 days to set an election date for a vacant House seat. President Donald Trump's confidant Roger Stone is rebuffing a request from the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee for documents and an interview connected to 2016 Russian election meddling, invoking his Fifth Amendment rights.Stone's attorney Grant Smith sent a letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California stating that Stone was declining Feinstein's requests, which she released over Twitter on Tuesday."The requests, as previously stated to staff, are far too overbroad, far too overreaching, far too wide ranging both in their all-embracing list of persons to whom the request could relate with whom Mr. Stone has communicated over the past three years, and the 'documents concerning' imprecision of the requests," Smith wrote."Mr. Stone's invocation of his Fifth Amendment privilege must be understood by all to be the assertion of a Constitutional right by an innocent citizen who denounces secrecy," the letter states.Smith noted that Stone has already testified to the House Intelligence Committee. Special counsel Robert Mueller is also investigating whether Stone was communicating with Julian Assange and WikiLeaks during the 2016 election either directly or through intermediaries.As the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Feinstein has no power to compel Stone to testify or produce documents. The AP concluded Friday that there were not enough outstanding ballots remaining to be counted in the state that would allow Joe Biden to overtake Trump’s lead of 73,697 votes.Friday was the deadline for counties in North Carolina to certify their results. Following updates from most counties in the state, Trump leads Biden by 1.3 percentage points.Trump campaigned aggressively in North Carolina with in-person rallies at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, including gatherings in Fayetteville, Winston-Salem and Greenville in the weeks before the election.He was scheduled to hold the Republican National Convention in the state but pulled out after a fight with the state’s Democratic governor over coronavirus restrictions.
