SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From big box stores to locally based companies, a number of businesses in San Diego County are significantly scaling up their workforces to meet the demand caused by the coronavirus.Walmart, the nation’s largest employer, plans to hire 150,000 associates by May, including 6,200 in California. The company has boosted pay and bonuses, raising e-commerce employee wages by an hour as online orders surge. In the San Diego area, the company is looking for cashiers and stockers, employees at fulfillment centers and truck drivers, said spokeswoman Tiffany Wilson.RELATED: San Diego COVID-19 trackerWith a lot of customers now shopping online for in-store pick-up, Walmart has a high demand for personal shoppers to fulfill those orders, Wilson said.Papa John’s announced Monday it will hire 20,000 workers nationwide, including 130 to 140 team members in San Diego County alone. The company is hiring various team member roles in stores along with delivery drivers, said spokesman Blair Carpenter.“Typically, delivery drivers can expect to earn up to to 15 an hour, and wages can vary at franchise locations,” Carpenter said.RELATED: What's the difference? Cold vs. flu vs. coronavirus symptomsCVS Health announced plans to hire 50,000 workers across the country, including more than 300 people in the San Diego area, part of what it calls the “most ambitious hiring drive in the company’s history.”The company is also boosting bonuses by 0 to 0 for health professionals and in-store associates working on the front lines.“If people have a mindset where they’re passionate about the customer, I’d love to have them apply,” said CVS Vice President of Talent Acquisition Jeffrey Lackey.RELATED: INTERACTIVE MAP: Confirmed coronavirus cases in San Diego CountyLocally based grocer Jimbo’s is also scaling up its workforce, with plans to hire 60-75 new employees. The positions include “food service, meat and produce clerks, stockers, cashiers and baggers,” the company said in a statement.Jimbo’s has given employees a 50 cent per hour raise, boosting its minimum wage to at least an hour. Walmart and CVS said they had shortened the hiring process from about two weeks to about one day. RELATED: What's open during California's coronavirus 'stay at home' orderPapa John’s said many applicants would be hired the same day they apply.“We have simplified the hiring process so that most individuals can start in most restaurants on the same day,” said Carpenter. “Applications can be done online in just a few minutes, and we are offering flexibility to interview by phone or in-person, with some safety precautions in place.” 2862

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From termite infestations to leaky pipes and AC units, some students at San Diego State University say their on-campus housing complex is “abysmal” even though it costs hundreds of dollars more per month than newer apartments just steps away.Shortly after moving into Aztec Corner, sophomores Hanna Bengard and Kalie Slivkoff said they had issues with electricity, a leaky A/C unit and spiders. A few weeks ago, they found termites in a roommate’s bed. They each pay ,285 a month for a four-person apartment in the on-campus housing complex, even though there’s another complex less than 20 yards away that charges 5 a month.RELATED: Thousands of students move into campus housing ahead of Fall 2019 semesterThe students say they have no other options because a new SDSU policy requires all non-local sophomores to live in on-campus housing.“It’s really frustrating,” said Bengard.Slivkoff added, “I get their point. Better GPAs, closer to campus. I get that kind of stuff, but raising the prices by nearly half, I just don’t agree with that.”SDSU took over the complex this semester with a master lease. Last year, rents were 4, according to the Daily Aztec.RELATED: Residents against SDSU 'mega-dorm' in their community“They’re forcing people to live in these apartments and that’s given them the ability to drastically upcharge the price,” said another resident, Connor Dreher.A Change.org petition demanding refunds had more than 560 signatures as of Friday afternoon.“The rent rate is a reflection of the property manager's market rate, plus SDSU’s residential education cost, which is embedded within the rent rate,” said SDSU spokeswoman La Monica Everett-Haynes. “Prior to the master lease agreement, rent was paid in 12 monthly payments. Today, SDSU’s rent on a license agreement are on a 10 installment payment agreement to accommodate student financial aid scheduling.”Everett-Haynes said the university does not own the property or directly respond to maintenance requests, but SDSU does track the requests to ensure they’re handled promptly.RELATED: SDSU Christian sorority sisters speak out over plans to demolish their house“The offices of Housing Administration and Residential Education has been actively working with residents to ensure that issues are being properly reported so that they may be addressed,” she said in a statement. As of noon Friday, there were only two outstanding service requests in the 602-bed complex, she said.Students acknowledged most service requests are handled promptly. But they said the problems just don’t seem to stop.“We’re all just fed up,” Dreher said. 2641

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Due to the pandemic, high school sports are officially on hold until January at the earliest. But while frustration is setting in, CIF is doing everything it can to get the kids back on the field. There's nothing like high school football and the sights and sounds of Friday Night Lights, or a slam dunk on the basketball court. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, it's wait-and-see for every high school athlete."I think it's very disappointing. Are kids, are families, are schools and communities have been waiting quite a long time and it's been tough," says San Diego Section CIF Commissioner Joe Heinz. There was hope of a December start, but as COVID-19 surged, it was negated by the California Department of Public Health. "It's definitely a fine balance across the nation as different things are happening," Heinz said. "I know our executive director is talking on a regular basis with the California Department of Health and with the governor's office."So for the time being, players, coaches, schools, and everybody else associated with high school athletics must be patient. It has everyone frustrated."You can't blame them. I think we are all frustrated. It's been a long time coming, and when you see other things going on in other states, which has been successful," said Heinz. Now, if the OK is given next month, Heinz says they will have a plan in place. However, there is no guarantee all sports can be played. "Obviously we could get to some point where we just don't have enough time to get a season in. There is no way to compact all of our sports into one season. We're just waiting for that opportunity to put a plan in place. We are just waiting for the word from the state," Heinz said. 1737

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Demonstrators gathered Friday outside San Diego Police Department's headquarters and marched through the streets downtown in protest of the Wisconsin shooting of Jacob Blake.Sky10 was live overhead as protesters marched through the streets, some carrying flags, to demonstrate. The gathering occurred on the same day as the March on Washington in the nation's capital, where thousands rallied on the 57th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.SDPD shut down Broadway and E Street between 14th and 15th streets, on the north and south sides of downtown SDPD headquarters in preparation for the protest. A flyer for the demonstration advertised the event as being in solidarity with protesters in Kenosha, Wisc., where Blake, a 29-year-old unarmed Black man, was shot seven times in the back by a police officer on Aug. 23.Officers have not said what led up to the shooting, but video shot by a neighbor shows Blake walking to an SUV and attempting to enter it moments before an officer grabs him by the shirt and shoots him.Blake is reportedly paralyzed from his wounds and recovering in a hospital.Sky10 video showed one individual being detained by police during the gathering. Police say they stopped a vehicle following the crowd after it ran at least one red light. During the stop, SDPD said the crowd also stopped and a suspect from the crowd "sprayed a chemical irritant spray at a line of officers."Four people were arrested, according to police: one for battery on an officer and resisting arrest with violence, and the remaining three for resisting/obstructing officers. SDPD later added that two people were arrested for shining a laser at officers and a police helicopter. Three more people were arrested later in the night, according to police. They said someone punched an officer and when police were in the process of arresting that person, two other people tried to interfere. All were arrested. 1967
