It's Hispanic Heritage Month.Sites like Yelp and Nextdoor are encouraging people to support Hispanic-owned businesses in their communities.This week, Yelp launched a tag that allows businesses to mark themselves as Latinx-owned.Nextdoor is teaming up with the group We Are All Human to provide resources to Hispanic-owned small businesses. They'll also provide free advertising during the month.The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce represents more than 4 million Hispanic-owned businesses. It says Latino business owners have been hit particularly hard during the pandemic and need support.Many have limited relationships with banks and are in neighborhoods considered “challenging” to lend to. Many were left out of the Paycheck Protection Program.“In round one, we saw many Latino-owned businesses were really largely left out of those opportunities,” said Ramiro Cavazos, President of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Half of our businesses have banking relationships. If you did not have a bank relationship, many of them were shut out.”On average, Hispanic-owned businesses only have about 27 days’ worth of capital reserved. A quarter of them have had to close, at least temporarily, since the pandemic began.“Our Latino-owned businesses provide jobs for our community,” said Cavazos. “They also pay taxes and make investments in their community. And these businesses really are the lifeblood of consumer spending."According to a study by Stanford University, Latino-owned businesses contributed 0 billion to the U.S. economy in the past decade. 1570

Iran has issued an arrest warrant for President Donald Trump and 35 other people in connection with a U.S. drone strike that killed a top Iranian military commander earlier this year.CNN and NBC both confirmed the reporting of Fars, an Iranian news outlet.Both CNN and NBC say Iran asked Interpol for help in apprehending Trump. In a statement issued to CNN, Interpol said it "would not consider requests of this nature" and said it was against the organization's constitution to "undertake any intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial character."Iran says it wants to press charges against Trump after he ordered the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, a general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in January. Soleimani's death sparked massive protests against American imperialism in Iran and heightened tensions in the region.The Pentagon claims that the unit directed by Soleimani is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans.Trump ordered the drone strike that killed Soleimani after days of riots at the American Embassy in Iraq. The U.S. claims the riots were backed by the Iranian government.Following Soleimani's death, Iran fired rockets near an Iraqi military base where U.S. troops were housed. Though Trump reported at the time that no American troops were hurt, it's since been revealed that dozens of U.S. soldiers were treated for brain injuries.The same day of the rocket attack at the Iranian base, an airliner was shot down near Tehran, killing 176 people. It’s time for the annual Leonid meteor shower, which gets its name because meteors often appear to originate from the constellation Leo.It peaks on the night of Saturday, Nov. 17 and early the next morning.Meteors may be visible throughout the month of November, but the peak should produce rates of 10 to 15 meteors per hour, according to Space.com.The best chance for seeing meteors is to find somewhere dark, away from city lights. The waxing gibbous moon also will pose a challenge this year, as its brightness will drown out some of the dimmer meteors.Despite the meteor shower’s name, meteors should be visible across the night sky in all directions. 669

In yet another aggressive attempt to bypass federal appeals courts, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to hear a challenge to President Donald Trump's policy that bars most transgender individuals from military service.The policy, first announced by the President in July 2017 via Twitter and later officially released by Secretary of Defense James Mattis, blocks individuals who suffer from a condition known as gender dysphoria from serving with limited exceptions. It also specifies that individuals without the condition can serve but only if they do so according to the sex they were assigned at birth.District courts across the country have so far blocked the policy from going into effect. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in one challenge earlier this fall and the DC Circuit will hear arguments in early December.On Friday, Solicitor General Noel Francisco filed petitions asking the justices to take up the issue in three separate cases that are still in lower courts so it could be decided definitively this term. Francisco argues that lower court rulings imposing nationwide injunctions are wrong and warrant immediate review.He writes because of the injunctions, "the military has been forced to maintain that prior policy for nearly a year" despite a determination by Mattis and a panel of experts that the "prior policy, adopted by (Defense Secretary Ash Carter), posed too great a risk to military effectiveness and lethality."House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi vowed to "fight this discriminatory action" in a statement Saturday."The President's ban is a cruel and arbitrary decision designed to humiliate transgender Americans who have stepped forward to serve our country," she added. "This bigoted ban weakens our military readiness and our country, and shows this president's stunning lack of loyalty to those who risk all to defend our freedoms."Earlier in the month, the Department of Justice warned the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that it planned to ask for emergency relief to lift the nationwide injunction.The filing comes after Chief Justice John Roberts and Trump got into a public dispute about the independence of the judiciary this week. Roberts issued a rare statement on Wednesday criticizing the President for calling one lower court judge who ruled against him an "Obama judge." The President responded via Twitter criticizing Roberts and accusing the American judiciary of undermining national security.Under normal circumstances, the Supreme Court does not like to take up an issue before it has made its way through the lower courts. The justices like to have issues percolate below so that they can benefit from the opinions of lower court judges.Francisco has moved aggressively at times to get cases before a Supreme Court that is more solidly conservative with the addition of Justice Brett Kavanaugh.Francisco asked the justices to step in to review the lower court's decision in a case related to the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. He also asked them to review an adverse lower court opinion blocking the proposed phase-out of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. 3198
