(KGTV) - A San Diego oceanographer helped solve the 74-year-old mystery of a missing World War II B-24 Bomber that disappeared in the Pacific Ocean.The crew of the plane “Heaven Can Wait” was on a mission to bomb Japanese anti-aircraft batteries in March 1944 when it was shot down by enemy fire.For decades, the plane’s location and the remains of the 11 troops on board were unknown. Project Recover, which finds the underwater resting places of fallen Americans, worked with family members who wanted closure for their lost relative.Eric Terrill of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at University of California, San Diego, led the team of marine scientists, archaeologists, and volunteers. They started the project in October 2017.The group used scanning sonars, high-definition imagers, advanced diving, and unmanned aerial and underwater robotic technologies. They also tracked data including historical eyewitness narratives from official military reports, mission documents, and diary entries from crew members on other aircraft in formation with the B-24 during its flight.The search for “Heaven Can Wait” covered nearly 27 square kilometers of sea floor. 11 days after the search started, the group found the wreckage under 213 feet of water on the north shore of Hansa Bay, off Papua New Guinea. "This is an important step toward our ultimate goal of identifying and returning home the crew of 'Heaven Can Wait' who bravely served our country during the battle at Hansa Bay," said Dan Friedkin, team member of Project Recover and chairman and CEO of The Friedkin Group. (KGTV) - An 18-year-old San Diego woman died and her 16-year-old cousin and a man were injured in a crash on Interstate 10 on the way to the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, a friend told 10News.Federico Pedrazzini confirmed Ginevra Gallone-Latte died in the crash in Banning early Thursday morning. Her cousin Manuela was injured.The California Highway Patrol said 21-year-old Cesar Hernandezozuna was speeding when his BMW drifted onto the dirt shoulder. The driver tried to get back onto the freeway but went over an embankment and hit two trees, officers said.The crash split the car in two. Gallone-Latte was thrown and died at the scene, according to the CHP.Her cousin was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Hernandezozuna suffered a facial injury, according to the CHP.Both teens had previously attended La Jolla High School.Officers ruled out alcohol and drugs as contributing factors in the crash but had not determined the cause, the CHP said. 979

(KGTV) -- A Marine with a Camp Pendleton-based unit died and a search is underway for eight others from that group following a training accident off the coast of San Clemente Island, U.S. Marine officials said.Officials said the incident happened around 5:45 p.m. Thursday during a routine training exercise involving the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, I Marine Expeditionary Force, and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, according to officials.An amphibious assault vehicle with 15 Marines and one sailor inside reported taking water during the exercise, officials said.Seven members of the group were rescued and taken to the hospital, but officials confirmed another -- a Marine -- died at Scripps La Jolla Hospital. Two individuals, both Marines, were in critical and stable conditions, respectively.The five other members have returned to their assigned ship.The eight members — seven Marines and one sailor — remained missing as of Friday afternoon and were being searched for by the Navy's USS John Finn, three Navy helicopters, several smaller Navy vessels and a U.S. Coast Guard ship and helicopter, Marine officials said.Officials say that all families of the Marines and the sailor involved have been notified."We have not moved into a recovery operation," Gen.
