SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 306 newly confirmed cases Sunday and no additional deaths from COVID- 19, bringing the county's totals to 29,883 cases and holding the death toll at 565.No new community outbreaks of COVID-19 were identified Saturday. In the past seven days, 37 community outbreaks were confirmed.Of the 5,655 tests reported Saturday, 5% were positive. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 5.3%. The state's target is fewer than 8% of tests returning positive.Of the total positive cases, 2,577 -- or 8.6% -- required hospitalization and 652 -- or 2.2% -- were admitted to an intensive care unit.According to county data, 57% of adult San Diego County residents have underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart and lung disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. These conditions put such people at higher risk for serious illness should they contract COVID-19.Of the total hospitalized during the pandemic due to the illness, 71% have been 50 or older. The highest age group testing positive for the illness are those 20-29, and that group is also least likely to take precautionary measures to avoid spreading the illness, a county statement said."Some San Diegans think they're not going to get sick and therefore are not following the public health guidance," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "What they don't realize is that they could get infected and pass the virus to others who are vulnerable."An amendment to the county's public health order, which went into effect Wednesday morning, now requires all employers to inform employees of any COVID-19 outbreaks or cases at a place of business. Previously, the county recommended employers disclose outbreak information but did not require it."We are continually adjusting and making refinements," said county Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. The percentage of Latino contact tracers and investigators hired by the county is currently 25%.The head of the Chicano Federation of San Diego County was critical of the county's response, saying it had not taken actions to reflect its demographics in contact tracers -- an inaction that could be exacerbating cases and reporting in the county's Latino population."We were told repeatedly that the county was working diligently to hire people from the community to serve as contact tracers, and that they were being intentional about making sure contract tracers and investigators were representative of the community. "Lives have been destroyed because of failed leadership. Elliott's lawsuit is aimed at forcing the defendants to fund rehabilitation and drug-education programs in the city and recoup the funds the city has spent on medical treatment for opioid abuse and homelessness caused by opioid abuse.Purdue Pharma officials could not be reached for immediate comment on the lawsuit.With the lawsuit, Elliott said she expects to join more cities, counties and states to form a multi-district litigation.``Opioid manufacturers have profited handsomely from the human suffering they intentionally inflicted through manipulation and deceit,''Elliott said. ``While San Diego will long deal with the destructive consequences of their greed, we intend to hold them accountable for funding drug treatment and education programs that will protect the health and safety of San Diegans.''Elliott's office plans to prosecute the pharmaceutical companies and the Sackler family for allegedly violating the state's ``unfair competition''law and for violating the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The City of San Diego began a virtual open house Monday to solicit public input for two potential uses for a vacant lot in the Encanto community.The city is asking the public to consider two redevelopment proposals for the Valencia Business Park located at Stevens Way and Imperial Avenue.Located in the federally designated San Diego Promise Zone, the Valencia Business Park has been vacant for more than 20 years. According to the city, the community-focused redevelopment is moving forward and expected to create at least 72 full-time jobs."For years, the vision for Southeastern San Diego has included activating the Imperial Avenue Corridor and development of the Valencia Business Park property," said Councilwoman Monica Montgomery Steppe. "We are energized to take another crucial step in this process and get vital input from our community on this redevelopment, as we see this vision come to fruition."The first proposal is a campus for the San Diego American Indian Health Center, described as a "wellness-centered community hub" that would account for 150 healthcare jobs, including 75 new ones.The other proposal is the San Diego Energy Equity Campus, a community hub site which proposes to provide educational resources to the underserved Southeast San Diego community.The public can view the proposals and provide feedback by visiting ValenciaBusinessParkInput.org. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley was added to the 30th annual list of the top 10 endangered landmarks and cultural landscapes in San Diego released Tuesday by the Save Our Heritage Organisation.SOHO called the facility -- known until recently as Qualcomm Stadium -- "one of the few mid-century designed, multi-purpose stadiums" to remain standing in the United States."Innovative design features include the pre-cast concrete, pre-wired light towers and spiral concrete pedestrian ramps," according to SOHO. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County rose seven-tenths of a cent today to .567, its highest amount since Aug. 26, 2015.The average price has risen 21 times in the past 26 days, increasing 13.3 cents, including seven-tenths of a cent on Thursday, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.The average price is 2.1 cents more than one week ago, 15.9 cents higher than one month ago and 54.9 cents greater than one year ago. It has risen 44.5 cents since the start of the year."Underlying gasoline wholesale prices have wavered within a range of about 10 cents for about the past month, allowing pump prices to remain relatively stable for this time of year," said Jeffrey Spring, the Automobile Club of Southern California's corporate communications manager."Barring any major incidents affecting supply or oil prices, it seems unlikely right now that price averages will push as high as a gallon this spring." 1014
