Since the Trump administration announced it would end its practice of separating families apprehended at the southern border last June under its "zero tolerance" immigration policy, at least 245 children have been separated from their parents, according to a new court filing.Between late June 2018 and early February of this year, the administration identified 245 children who had been separated, though four of them are under additional review. The administration said the basis for the separation in the majority of cases was "criminality, prosecution, gang affiliation or other law enforcement purpose."The court document is a status report in an ongoing family separation lawsuit. The court will hold a hearing Thursday.The American Civil Liberties Union originally filed the case against the Trump administration last year on behalf of a Congolese woman, referred to as "Ms. L," who was seeking asylum in the US and was separated from her 7-year-old daughter. The case was later expanded to become a class-action lawsuit.District Judge Dana Sabraw issued a preliminary injunction last June blocking most family separations at the US-Mexico border and ordering that those already separated be reunited.As of February 13, the government has discharged 2,735 of 2,816 possible children who fell under the Ms. L lawsuit, according to Wednesday's court filing. There are also five children in the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is required to place kids with a sponsor in the US, proceeding toward reunification "or other appropriate discharge." Four of those children have parents who are not in the US.Of the children who were separated as of last June, 62 are no longer in Office of Refugee Resettlement care, according to the court filing. It adds: "Based on the information available to date, in the 245 identified separations the parent was either excluded from the Ms. L class or was separated for a reason consistent with the Court's preliminary injunction."The government is still reviewing the cases of four separations.Plaintiffs in the case have requested additional information on the new separations. SHOREWOOD, Wis. — A Wisconsin physical education teacher has been placed on leave after allegedly telling African-American students to reenact slavery and "slavery games."April 1 was a typical day in gym class at Shorewood Intermediate School until seventh-grader Alexis Averette says she was assigned an odd game by PE instructor Jan Zehren. “Ms. Zehren forced me and my partner to reenact slavery in front of the entire class," she said. "When we told her we were uncomfortable she told us we still had to do it."While some students presented dodge ball, others say they were paired up by race and told to reenact "slavery games." When Alexis and her partner proposed another game, the students say they were told it was too common.When Alexis told her parents, her mother and father were shocked. “She came home and she told me she had to reconstruct games ever played during slavery," said Alexis's father, Yuri Averette. "Yeah, I was completely shocked. I knew it was a problem immediately when she said she was uncomfortable."Averette and other parents voiced their concerns to the school. In response, Zehren was escorted out of building and placed on leave.Zehren has taught physical education in the Shorewood School District for 36 years. The school district sent a letter to students and parents saying they were investigating. Parents like Averette are seeking justice and want Zehern fired.“We don’t want (that) here and that’s not just for my child but for any other child. Some residents in 34 counties in California will lose electricity overnight Tuesday into Wednesday in hopes to reduce the risk of the spread of wildfires, PG&E announced on Tuesday. The power outages could last several days, PG&E said. This is due to high winds that are expected in parts of California on Wednesday and Thursday. Isolated areas could have winds of 60 to 70 MPH. Gusty winds coupled with dry conditions mean conditions will be favorable for wildfires. Power company officials say that the outages will begin in the northern sections of the state, and trickle down into central and coastal sections of California. “The safety of our customers and the communities we serve is our most important responsibility, which is why PG&E has decided to turn power off to customers during this widespread, severe wind event. We understand the effects this event will have on our customers and appreciate the public’s patience as we do what is necessary to keep our communities safe and reduce the risk of wildfire,” said Michael Lewis, PG&E’s senior vice president of Electric Operations.Dozens of community centers will open during daylight hours while power is out.
