Since January of this year, state regulators have approved about 100 rate hike requests involving dozens of property insurers.The insurance regulation office in Florida gave the green light to South Fidelity to raise their rates by about 30%. President Paul Handerhan says roofers, plumbers and others solicit homeowners through ads, calls or door knocks and convince them to file an insurance claim. Handerhan described the pitch to homeowners as: "Let us do a free inspection of your roof, let us go inside the property of your home to see if we can find any damages. We will file a claim on your behalf."Brandes says all those claims snowball and lead to premium hikes."You have hundreds if not thousands of people asking for new roofs then all of a sudden rates across the state begin to skyrocket."Pasco County homeowner Linda Cempe got a new roof after contractor Smart Storm Solutions cold-called her about possible storm damage. She said the roofer told her that "other than a minor deductible, the whole cost for the repairs, including the facia and soffits, would be covered."The I-team checked court records and found Smart Storm Solutions filed over 300 lawsuits against insurers, including Linda Cempe's carrier in 2019 alone.Smart Storm Solutions staff attorney Robert MacKinnon says the company will only canvas neighborhoods with known storm damage. He also said the company files cases when insurance companies refuse to pay the full cost of a claim."They are confirmed claims we are arguing over the extent of damages," MacKinnon said.Smart Storm Solutions also sued Larry Kohman's insurance company over his claim after cold calling the homeowner about roof damage.We checked and found court documents showing the Kohmans' insurer settled with Smart Storm Solutions over a year ago. But the contractor never returned to replace the roof."We don't sleep much," Larry said, who explained he and his wife constantly worried about the growing amount of water damage in their home caused by a leaky roof.Smart Storm Solutions' attorney blamed the pandemic for the delay in Kohman's case and apologized, saying the company should have communicated better. After we started asking questions, Smart Storm Solutions replaced the couple's roof.MacKinnon says the lawsuits his company is filing are needed to keep insurers in check and are not part of the rate hike problem.Brandes says insurance rates could double in the next three years over claims and litigation. He says he will propose legislative reform measures that would reduce attorney fees and route some lawsuits into mediation. MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – On an old road in rural Massachusetts, comes a new technology that could change everything about drunk driving – by eliminating it. “Clearly it's a big problem and we need to do something about it,” said Dr. Bud Zaouk, president of KEA Technologies. The company is currently testing alcohol sensors in cars that would prevent a drunk driver from hitting the road. “It's a public-private partnership between the auto industry, all 17 automakers in the U.S. and the federal government,” Dr. Zaouk said. How does it work? There are two technologies: one that measures the level of alcohol in someone’s breath, similar to a breathalyzer. Another device detects alcohol through a touch of fingertips. The technology would allow you to start a vehicle, but if alcohol is detected, that vehicle would not move at all. Outside of the lab, the real-world testing involves using passengers with varying levels of intoxication. It’s more complicated than just getting someone drunk on vodka. “A lot of science actually goes behind that. So, we have something that we call a ‘drink master,’” said Dr. Kelly Ozdemir, director of applied sciences at KEA Technologies. “We can calculate milliliters how much alcohol to give for them.” Kristin Davis is with Mothers Against Drunk Driving. A few days before Christmas 2016, a drunk driver blew through a red light at 55 miles per hour, hitting Kristin’s car. She was 7 months pregnant at the time.“Every time I got in my car after the crash, I would replay it in my head,” she said. “I had to be cut out and I didn't know whether or not my baby had survived until they could get me to the hospital.” Her baby did survive, but she hopes the alcohol sensors can help others avoid the ordeal she went through. “I hope to see it one day as standard as seatbelts and airbags and backup cameras,” Davis said. That day might be coming sooner than you think. A bipartisan bill making its way through Congress, could make alcohol sensors standard in all new vehicles, possibly within the next four years. “This technology can't be optional,” said J.T. Griffin, chief government affairs officer for MADD. “It needs to be in everybody's car for it to be effective.” Back in Massachusetts, the testing to make the alcohol sensors road ready keeps going, in the effort to save the more than 10,000 people killed each year in drunk driving crashes. “We need to make sure that this doesn't happen on our roads and make sure that we're able to save these lives,” Dr. Zaouk said.The first vehicles to see these alcohol sensors installed will likely be government fleet vehicles used by local, state and federal agencies. That includes jobs like nannies, housekeepers and home care employees.Now, they’re hoping a new proposed federal labor law will protect them for the first time ever. Nurse June Barrett is used to taking care of others, but today, she feels she's taking a big step to take care of herself. Barrett traveled to Washington, D.C. with about 100 other domestic workers to rally for safer job protections. “He would touch me, kiss me, say horrible things to me,” Barrett says of one of her past employees. As a live-in caretaker, Barrett says she has worked for patients who would sexually harass her. “I suffered in silence,” she says. “I had to suffer all of that by myself.” For decades, federal labor laws have excluded domestic workers from many protections, which has had an impact on about two million nannies, house cleaners and home care workers. Nine states have passed bills to protect domestic workers but now, Congress will consider a bill to ensure those workers earn at least the minimum wage, get paid sick leave and overtime, meal breaks and stronger protections against harassment and discrimination.“We need to have a federal standard, a national standard, so that workers are protected in every state. Not just some,” says Monica Ramirez with the National Domestic Workers Alliance. Ramirez hopes for the first time in history, there will be legal protections for domestic workers in their work environments. It’ll be a historic bill that could provide domestic workers protections most other workers take for granted. “Why aren't we getting the protection that we need?” asks Barrett. “Why shouldn't we get the protection we need?” 1766

New transportation options are showing up in cities across the country, including shareable bikes, electric scooters, and now mopeds are even starting to compete for street space.However, with all these new electronic transportation options there are safety concerns. Starting this weekend, 400 electric mopeds will be hitting the streets of Washington, D.C. One thousand of the mopeds are already available for rent in New York City. The company behind these electric mopeds, Revel, plans to expand to other cities. “The benefit is really simple. The way you have to think about it: this is almost always at least half the cost of Uber and Lyft and twice as much fun,” says Paul Suhey with Revel. They're part of a growing number of transportation options people can rent by using their cell phone app. Most major cities already have electric scooters and bicycles. Last year in the U.S., people took 84 million trips on bikes and scooters, according to National Association of City Transportation officials. However, the influx of rides is causing safety concerns, with some concerned the vehicles will add to the congestion on the road. “If you're having to be aware of either a cyclist, a scooter rider, now a moped rider, who may go in between cars, you have to be careful and watch out for each other as you're using these different modes of operations,” says Jeanette Tejeda de Gomez with AAA. She says research shows moped riders are more likely to be injured or die than those walking, biking or driving a car. However, Revel says helmets are included with each rental, riders have to be at least 21, have a driver's license and they screen the rider's driving record. “From our first couple months operating in New York, in over 300,000 rides, 99.99 percent have happened without incident, and we understand that safety record doesn't happen by accident,” Suhey says.
