(KGTV) — Police say they were tasked with breaking up a crowd of 50 to 100 beachgoers having a large party on Friday amid a ban on gatherings in the county due to the pandemic.Carlsbad Police say the large crowd of mostly young people was having a large party and drinking near the Rue Des Chateaux beach access point on North Ocean St. at about 6 p.m.Police said when they arrived, the crowd voluntarily dispersed and no fines were given.A witness who sent ABC 10News a photo of the scene said it's not the first time this has happened. (KGTV) — Officials have identified the bicyclist killed this week after being hit by a train in Carlsbad.Thursday night, 37-year-old Jason Holsinger was riding his bike on the sidewalk when he came to the Grand Avenue train intersection in downtown Carlsbad. Officials say even though the crossing arms were fully down, he rode around them and collided with the side of a passing train.The San Diego County Medical Examiner ruled the death an accident.Holsinger's death has renewed worries of safety surrounding train crossings in Carlsbad.The tragedy occurs just two days after Operation Clear Track, an event meant to raise awareness about railroad safety hosted by Carlsbad Police, Amtrak Police, and Operation Lifesaver. The event is the largest rail safety law enforcement initiative in the U.S., running from Sept. 22 - 28.In 2017, the family of Patrick Terrin filed a lawsuit against the City of Carlsbad and BNSF Railway, arguing they "negligently, carelessly and wrongfully failed to properly warn persons crossing the railroad tracks."Terrin was killed in 2014 after a night of bar-hopping nearby with his sister and friends. He had crossed under the crossing arm bar before it was fully down, as the rest of the group waited. CARDIFF (KGTV) -- With just a little bit of planning, Sharon Belknap begins a free-hand sand mandala that will offer its message, briefly, to all who pass by on the bridge at Cardiff State Beach where the San Elijo lagoon meets the ocean.Watching her work is like watching a dance.The graphic designer and illustrator draws shapes using a small, inexpensive rake. She brings extras because often passersby find inspiration and ask to join her, a collaboration she welcomes.The connections she has made through her sand art, she says have added meaning to her creations.People also send her their photos of her artwork, asking to use them in their holiday cards.Each mandala has an inscription, such as: "You Are Loved," or "Only Love."One that resonated particularly was "Grateful for ____.""People were shouting their words from the bridge," says Belknap.Sometimes friends join her.Heather Nelson is a regular, and a longtime friend. The day we shot the story, Kari Prevost was joining for her first collaboration with Sharon."The sounds of the ocean, the beauty of the water," she says, "it's restorative.
