 A Girl Scout leader in Beaverton, Oregon was at the right place at the right time.Diane Bauer said she was at a Fred Meyer store on Wednesday when her teenage daughter Charlotte noticed a mother in distress at few aisles over.Bauer said her daughter was pointing to a baby a mother was holding – and realized the 5-week-old infant was not breathing.That's when the CPR-certified Girl Scout leader dropped everything and ran over to help.Bauer said she took the baby, told the cashier to call 911, and gave the newborn CPR.“The only room that was available was the little check writing stand,” said Bauer. “Those breaths started to go in and I continued until he came to, and in the meantime the mom was calling 911.”Soon, Bauer said she felt the baby's little heartbeat. After a few more breaths, the baby was alert and breathing on his own again.“Had the mom hold his hand, stroked his face and he kind of turned and nuzzled towards her like he was hungry,” said Bauer.Bauer said she and her daughter stayed until paramedics arrived.She credits her daughter for recognizing that the baby had stopped breathing.Bauer said she had just finished the CPR recertification at her job last month. 1204

(AP) — U.S. health officials have allowed emergency use of a second antibody drug to help the immune system fight COVID-19. It's an experimental medicine that President Donald Trump was given when he was sickened last month. The Food and Drug Administration on Saturday authorized use of the Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. drug for people with mild-to-moderate symptoms. Tests of the drug are continuing, but early results suggest it may prevent hospitalization and emergency room visits. Use is allowed for adults and children 12 and over who are at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19 because of age or certain other medical conditions. 652

(CNN) -- A high school principal has died after going to the hospital to donate bone marrow to try to save the life of a 14-year-old in France.Derrick Nelson, principal of Westfield High School in New Jersey, died unexpectedly Sunday night, according to school officials. His fiancée, Sheronda Braker, said that Nelson suffered complications after his bone marrow donation.The school's newspaper reported in February that Nelson decided to donate his bone marrow to a boy in France after being contacted by Be the Match. The national bone marrow donor program told him that his blood might be a match."If it's just a little bit of pain for a little bit of time that can give someone years of joy, it's all worth it," Nelson told the paper then.In a statement to CNN, Braker said Nelson "was a tremendous father to our beloved daughter Morgan and the best companion and life partner I could have ever asked for.""He loved his family almost beyond belief. He was a man who carried himself with dignity, courage and compassion," she continued. "His last kind and generous act on this earth in giving so someone else might live is a true testament to who he was and how he should always be remembered. We will always love him."in a letter to parents, Westfield Public Schools Superintendent Margaret Dolan said, "Dr. Nelson touched us all with his kindness, compassion, integrity, and endlessly positive attitude. (AP) -- Lowe's Cos. is laying off thousands of employees at its U.S. stores as it outsources some of their duties to outside companies.The home-improvement chain, based in Mooresville, North Carolina, declined to say exactly how many employees were affected. But The Wall Street Journal reported that thousands of employees were told this week that their jobs were eliminated, which the company confirmed.Lowe's spokeswoman Jackie Pardini Hartzell said Thursday that the cuts are coming as the company moves to third-party assemblers and facility services to allow store associates to spend more time on the sales floor serving customers. Previously some store workers did assembly work, such a constructing floor models, and janitorial work. Hartzell said that employees in these positions will have the opportunity to apply for other open roles at Lowe's.She said the company is not disclosing how many are affected as the number of employees impacted varies by store and the company has a strong track record of retaining associates in other roles within the company.Lowe's, under its relatively new CEO Marvin Ellison, is trying to return its focus to its home improvement chain and streamline its business.After Ellison took the reins last year, he thinned executive positions at the company and began paring away weaker selling items in its stores. Lowe's also sold announced last summer that it was closing the 99 Orchard Supply Hardware stores it owns in California, Florida and Oregon.
