SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 13-year old girl, waiting for her mother to pick her up in Grant Hill, was attacked by a knife-wielding man Friday afternoon.San Diego Police are now using surveillance videos in their search for the suspect, who yanked a gold necklace from the teen's neck before making his getaway near the intersection of 26th and K Street.The girl wasn't hurt, but parents like Elizabeth Alvarado, whose twin 12-year-old daughters walk by that same spot each day, are hoping he doesn't strike again.Alvarado saw surveillance video after the principal of her daughters' school sent parents a link, suggesting they talk to their kids about staying safe.Andy Trakas of Albert Einstein Charter Middle School said the girl who was attacked wasn't one of his students, but there are several other schools in the neighborhood."We decided to be very, very proactive because the safety of our students," said Trakas, adding that all children in the community are a concern."These things can happen anywhere," Trakas said. "They can happen in La Jolla, they can happen in City Heights, they can happen in Del Sur or La Mesa, whatever, but, by being part of the community we can all work together to make sure that our eyes and ears are open so we can find out who this person is and make this place a better, safer community for our kids."Trakas suggested parents talk to their kids about being aware of their surroundings and the importance of staying in groups, not alone, after school. San Diego Police stepped up patrols in Grant Hill after school and are following every lead to catch the thief.The suspect is describe as a black male five feet, eight inches tall with a stocky build who was wearing a plain black hooded sweatshirt, a black cloth covering the lower portion of his face and dark-colored pants. Authorities say the suspect was driving a white Hyundai Elantra  (pictured below.) 1919

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 74-year-old man reportedly hit a bicyclist with his truck in La Mesa Tuesday before leaving the scene thinking he simply hit a curb, police say. According to police, the crash happened on the 7000 block of University Avenue at 4:19 p.m. Tuesday. Police say the 74-year-old was driving his 1994 GMC pick-up truck when he turned right onto Harbinson Avenue and struck the 21-year-old bicyclist. Police say the cyclist was in a designated bicycle lane. The man kept driving, thinking he hit a curb, according to authorities. “When contacted by the police the driver of the pick-up truck was shocked to learn that he had hit a bicyclist and cooperated fully with the investigation,” La Mesa Police said in a news release. According to police, the bicyclist appeared to have a broken ankle as a result of the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 619-667-1400. 906

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A big rig blew a tire and veered across all lanes of southbound Interstate 15 at Carmel Mountain Road Thursday afternoon, leading to a Sig Alert on the freeway. The flatbed truck lost its front left tire about 2:20 p.m., the California Highway Patrol reported. The driver lost control and hit two cars before crashing into the center divider. One of the cars hit an SUV, and was knocked over the freeway rail into the HOV lanes.The CHP reported debris on the freeway from the crash, including fuel leaking from the truck. One injured person was taken to Palomar Medical Center, City of San Diego officials reported. Another driver had minor injuries.Check 10News traffic conditions The far left lane of I-15 and the right lane of the HOV section reopened at 5:45 p.m., according to the CHP. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The University of California Board of Regents announced Wednesday that it will ease admissions requirements for students applying to its nine campuses, including UC San Diego, during the coronavirus pandemic.The board voted Tuesday to suspend using SAT scores and letter grade requirements for A-G courses completed within the 2020 school year for all students who apply."We want to help alleviate the tremendous disruption and anxiety that is already overwhelming prospective students due to COVID-19," said John Perez, chair of the UC Board of Regents.
