(CNN) -- A high school principal has died after going to the hospital to donate bone marrow to try to save the life of a 14-year-old in France.Derrick Nelson, principal of Westfield High School in New Jersey, died unexpectedly Sunday night, according to school officials. His fiancée, Sheronda Braker, said that Nelson suffered complications after his bone marrow donation.The school's newspaper reported in February that Nelson decided to donate his bone marrow to a boy in France after being contacted by Be the Match. The national bone marrow donor program told him that his blood might be a match."If it's just a little bit of pain for a little bit of time that can give someone years of joy, it's all worth it," Nelson told the paper then.In a statement to CNN, Braker said Nelson "was a tremendous father to our beloved daughter Morgan and the best companion and life partner I could have ever asked for.""He loved his family almost beyond belief. He was a man who carried himself with dignity, courage and compassion," she continued. "His last kind and generous act on this earth in giving so someone else might live is a true testament to who he was and how he should always be remembered. We will always love him."in a letter to parents, Westfield Public Schools Superintendent Margaret Dolan said, "Dr. Nelson touched us all with his kindness, compassion, integrity, and endlessly positive attitude. "We hold him and his family in our hearts as we grieve this loss together and I know you join me in granting his family the privacy they have requested."Nelson, 44, served in the US Army Reserve for more than 20 years, according to Dolan. He joined Westfield Public Schools in 2010 as the assistant principal of Roosevelt Intermediate School.He later was assistant principal and principal of Westfield High, which has more than 1,800 students.People praised Nelson as a committed educator and a role model with a strong moral compass.His friend Salim Sivaad, also known as Wayne Clemmons, an Atlanta-based musician, told CNN he received news of Nelson's death from a mutual friend."Derrick was my brother's college roommate and fraternity brother, and that's how I met him back in 1995," he said. "I had not been in contact with him recently. That's why it was such a shock. ... I didn't know he was donating or had the complications before he passed."Jackson O'Brien, senior class president at Westfield High, told CNN affiliate WABC, "He always tried to inspire students in the classroom and outside to be good people. (AP) - Pacific Gas & Electric Company says it will cooperate with any investigations stemming from a massive wildfire in Northern California.The utility told state regulators Thursday that it experienced a problem on an electrical transmission line near the site of the Camp Fire minutes before the fire broke out. "We were investigating drug sales on the street," said Retired Detroit Deputy Police Chief James Younger whose partner was shot in 1972 by a man who was never arrested for the crime. The shooting left Detroit Police Officer Donald Kimbrough paralyzed from the waist down and he died December 7, 2017, from medical complications that resulted from the decades old shooting. "With the knowledge that he was shot and never fully recovered, the manner is homicide," said Dr. Bernardino Pacris from the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Officer who conducted an autopsy on Kimbrough and recovered an oxidized, deformed bullet from Kimbrough's back. Younger said doctors could not remove the bullet without killing Kimbrough because of where it was located. Sergeant Todd Eby of Detroit's Homicide Task Force has been assigned to solving Officer Kimbrough's murder. It happened August 25, 1972, in an alley near a methadone clinic that was located at John R and Belmont.Kimbrough, Younger and another officer, Donald Hughes, were investigating drug activity in the area when they heard gunshots. Kimbrough and Hughes took off running to the area where witnesses said men were shooting while Younger began to navigate their vehicle around traffic to get to the location. Kimbrough and Hughes spotted one man holding a long gun and ordered him to place the weapon on the ground. Moments later, another man who was sitting in the driver's seat of a green Lincoln Continental that was parked nearby, rolled his window down and opened fire on Kimbrough and Hughes. The two officers returned fire, but Kimbrough had been shot. The man who had the long gun picked it back up off the ground and raced to hop into the green Lincoln Continental. Both men escaped.The vehicle they fled in is described as a green 1968 Lincoln Continental with a black vinyl top. It's unclear if the car was a two-door or four-door. A partial license plate may be GA- 2--.The shooter was described as a white man 25 - 30-years-old with shoulder-length black hair, a thick black mustache and long bushy sideburns. Police did recover the shooter's .32 caliber Colt semi-automatic pocket pistol. A man found it in his yard.  "Don was a good policeman. A good person and very energetic person. We spent a lot of time together not only on duty, but also off duty," said Younger who retired as a Detroit Police Chief and now teaches Criminal Justice at Wayne County Community College. If he's alive, Kimbrough's shooter could be in his seventies. But Younger, Eby, and family and friends of Donald Kimbrough believe it's not too late for someone to help solve the case by identifying a suspect. "Where's man's humanity towards man," said Younger. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire Department and Bomb Squad responded to a hazmat situation in Kearny Mesa Monday. According to the department, the incident started just before 3 p.m. near the intersection of Balboa Avenue and Ponderosa Avenue near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, workers at Senior Aerospace Jet Products routinely put titanium shavings in barrels. Monday afternoon, one of the barrels, a 55-gallon drum, began to get hot and started expanding. Firefighters arrived at the business and poured water on top of the barrel to cool the contents after evacuating the building. The bomb squad and hazmat technicians were also called to the scene and, after opening the barrel, say the titanium was reacting with another chemical. Shortly before 7 p.m., the area was declared safe and the barrel turned over to the company for proper disposal. 924
