Officer Aja Ellis has patrolled the streets of Illinois for nine years. From Chicago to the suburbs, she decided to settle in a community called Harvey, just south of the city.With every call, she has one mission. "There’s not a lot of trust," said Officer Ellis. "My goal was to try to change the perception."It’s a challenge across the country, but in the city of Harvey, especially, trust between an officer and the community they serve is hard to build."A couple years ago, the department was raided by the FBI. The department was raided by the state police. There’s a history here that we can’t ignore, and we want to show them we aren’t the same old Harvey," said Police Chief Robert M. Collins, Jr. of the City of Harvey Police Department.With the department’s new direction, comes new technology. It's an effort, "to weed the bad ones out so that we’re able to have a police department full of officers that are here willing to come to work for the citizens," said Officer Ellis.The department now has an early-intervention system for officer behavior run by Chicago company Benchmark Analytics. "We’re going to be able to help police departments understand that pattern of behavior and intervene long before you have very problematic incidents," said the company's CEO Ron Huberman, a former officer himself.The program collects all kinds of data on officers. It tracks things like arrests, traffic stops, citizen complaints and training. It also goes beyond those data points; the app also tracks officer overtime, vacation time, officer awards and positive comments, and promotions, in an effort to not only flag the negative, but to track potential for recognition as well.Once this information is compiled, it flags officers who may be at-risk for more serious misconduct in the future."This system will identify if this officer needs to be re-trained, if there needs to be discipline, and unfortunately if that officer needs to be terminated," said Chief Collins.Officer Ellis sees this intervention not only as a chance to change the culture for police, she believes it will help in the community too. "Sometimes, you may get that coworker that you don’t want to work with because maybe their attitude or maybe how they handle things, and you’ll get to a scene and they just blow it up, and I think to look at it from that aspect, it gives us better coworkers," Officer Ellis said.She is hoping community trust will be the biggest gain. "Once they see one bad officer, it's war from there. But if they’re seeing that something’s being done about this bad officer they’ve been complaining about, they’ll say, 'Maybe we can trust them a little bit more,'" said Officer Ellis.The Harvey Police Department has only had the technology for a couple of months, so they have not collected enough data yet to see how their officers are doing. But a police department in North Carolina created their own similar early intervention system several years ago, and the chief there said it's been a big help for officer morale and mental health."A lot of times, they may be going through something others don’t see, but through our early intervention system, we might identify characteristics that allow them to open up to speak about things that are bothering them or they’re going through," said Johnny Jennings, chief of the Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Department.But experts warn, with all the improvements technology like this can bring, comes limitations."The supervisors—they have to be inclined to use the information because they can ignore it on the system just like if it’s sitting in the drawer," said John Rappaport, a University of Chicago professor of law. "It relies on the people to use the technology correctly and honestly and to want to move the department in the right direction."For Officer Ellis, she knows in the end, it will take more than just the data to reform a department."I think it’s going to take a good while, but I'm willing to stand in the fight to see the change," she said. Real change that may come more quickly with a little help."If that technology helps out in a positive way, we have a duty to use that to make ourselves better to better serve the community," said Chief Collins. 4232

(KGTV) -- A World War II veteran got a big surprise Saturday morning when dozens of cars drove up to her Oceanside home to celebrate her 98th birthday.Corporal Jeri Marcot wasn't expecting too much on her birthday — maybe a call or two. ."I woke up this morning and said, 'Oh well, it's my birthday,' but wow, you made it a wow event!" Marcot said in amazement.With the help of Honor Flight San Diego, her family set up a surprise.She was taken to her birthday throne, and car after car, she waved to many of her friends and family."Today is great," Marcot's granddaughter, Janelle Stettler, said. "It's another way we are getting around the COVID restrictions where we're having a drive-by parade to celebrate her birthday,"The 98-year-old wears many hats: mother, grandmother, book worm, but also, one of America's first-ever female Marines."I was 18 when I went in the service in WWII, so that seems like a long, long time ago," Marcot laughed.Back in 1944, enlisting in the Marine Corps as a young woman was not the "cool" thing to do. Marcot says women were barely recognized as being part of the Armed Forces. But the aviation lover knew it was her duty. Since she had already taken flying lessons before enlisting, she ended up working on airplanes.Her two-and-a-half years in the service inspired people like Holly Shaffner, who served 24 years in the US Coast Guard."These women Marines, they lead the charge," Shaffner said. She now works for Honor Flight San Diego."We served, and it was great," Marcot said. "It was our turn to do that, so I'm happy I got the chance."Even after her military life, Marcot continued a life of service as a children's librarian until her retirement."She was always at the forefront," Marcot's daughter, Linda, said. "Forefront of the Marines, the forefront of starting a library in El Centro. [She's] one of these women that is an inspiration."She is such an inspiration that many of her fellow WWII veterans came by to thank her for her service and wish her a happy birthday."Look at all my friends," Marcot said. "Oh my goodness, you could write a book about all of this."Maybe when the Corporal returns to her usual peace and quiet life, the former librarian will get around to writing down her own amazing life story. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — An orphaned mountain lion cub who was badly burned in a Northern California wildfire is being treated at the Oakland Zoo after being rescued. The zoo says a firefighter rescued the four- to six-week-old cub Wednesday from the Zogg Fire. The cub, who weighs less than 4 pounds, had his whiskers singed off and his paws badly burned. And what makes me feel good is there’s still desire to do that, it’s just how to do it," said Lisa Frydenlund, an HR Knowledge Adviser with the Society for Human Resources Management. She says some businesses will be holding virtual celebrations."I even saw just recently something about getting a musician or some sort of that to be prerecorded and then sent out to people. So, it's a little mini concert. I think employers are getting very creative," said Frydenlund.Valerie Keels works at the company Gavi, which has offices in Switzerland and Washington, D.C. Keels is working with a team of five other people to put on a virtual end-of-the-year office event. Complete with a virtual cartoonist, personal videos and more for their 350 employees."I think it serves a purpose. It's a reminder to those people who are more solitary, and okay being that way, that yeah, we’re all in this together and we can still be collegial and still have fun together," said Keels.The biggest focus for Keels and her team is making sure their employees come together to celebrate all of their hard work."It's so important that organizations either foster or maintain that connectedness because it's so important for the motivation and even well-being of staff to be connected to both the organization and the colleagues," said Keels.For some companies in lieu of holiday party, extra vacation days will be offered, as a way to show employees their appreciation during this unprecedented year."Time away is definitely something that's an added benefit that people can provide. You don't have to have a celebration or try to mimic what we had before, but why not give the gift of time," said Frydenlund.Frydenlund says while some companies will still be hosting holiday parties as usual, she says many will likely consider the pandemic and proceed with caution."When you start to think about what is the intention around celebrating around the holidays and I’ve always wanted to make sure you’re inclusive in doing so because everybody celebrates things differently. And just like this entire year, it's giving employers more time and awareness to think about well how do we do that," said Frydenlund.Coming together or giving back to so many who've worked especially hard and gone through so much in today's new normal. 2812

  

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Oceanside man convicted of kidnapping and killing a 3-week-old baby girl and trying to kill the infant’s parents and uncle was sentenced to nearly 142 years to life in prison.Anthony Ray McCall, 32, was found guilty of first-degree murder, kidnapping and attempted kidnapping, along with four counts of attempted murder on March 2.A jury in Long Beach deliberated for less than three hours before returning with a verdict.A co-defendant in the case, Giseleangelique Rene D'Milian, pleaded no contest to first-degree murder for the murder of Eliza De La Cruz as well as for the attempted murders of the infant’s father and uncle.The woman was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.Eliza’s body was found in a San Diego trash bin in 2015.Eliza’s mother said during testimony that she pleaded with McCall not to take her baby. "I couldn't do anything to stop him," Honorato said. She said she could hear the voice of a woman telling her daughter, "I'm your new mommy."She said the voice was the same as the woman who offered her a ride home earlier in the day.A third defendant, Todd Damon Boudreaux, 46 pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact in October of 2016 and was sentenced to time served. 1246
