(KGTV) — In a show of solidarity, Escondido Police Chief Ed Varso and Mayor Paul McNamara joined community members for a peaceful demonstration outside of City Hall Wednesday.“I’m standing here on behalf of my department to make sure the community understands that we are all together in this,” said Varso at the event. “We all condemn what happened to Mr. Floyd it should have never of happened, it was wrong, and I’m glad they’re being held accountable for it.”The organized demonstration included several speakers, including Yusef Miller of the Racial Justice Coalition San Diego, Rev. ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV) — Law enforcement agencies all around San Diego are working to find out if there are any more overdoses tied to mysterious blue pills that killed four people in East County this week. The pills are advertised as having a "painkiller high."An Encinitas mother, Lisa Nava was watching 10News this morning when she found out about the mysterious blue pills. She recognized them as the same pills her son took before he died three months ago.The memories of her son make her laugh. But the way he died brings Nava to tears. "Your biggest job in your life is to protect your child. I couldn't protect mine," Nava cried.Last year, her son Alex Morgan Nava had a skateboarding accident. He broke his knee, then his ankle. Doctors prescribed him oxycodone for this pain. Little did he know that would lead to an opioid addiction that would eventually kill him. On April 5, 2019, her Alex died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 24 years old. The last three months have been hell for the Nava family. But Friday morning, she saw a particular report on 10News. It was 10News anchor Virginia Cha saying, "Deputies connected some blue pills to the deaths of four people and just 24 hours."She immediately recognized the "blue pills." They were the same pills she confiscated from her son earlier this year. "I had to flush them down the toilet, and that was in January. They were those M-30's. The blue pills," Nava vividly remembered. Since then, the Nava family worked together to help Alex. They took him to the emergency room on multiple occasions. They sent him to a 30-day rehab facility. But Alex was too hooked. "He just made a wrong turn and couldn't turn around. He ran out of time," Nava said. His cause of death was 'Acute polydrug intoxication: Combined effects of acetaminophen and fentanyl-- The tiniest dose of one of the deadliest drugs."We thought he would be one of the lucky ones. But we didn't know that we were dealing with fentanyl," Nava cried.According to the Health and Human Services, around 130 people in America die of opioid overdoses every day. Alex is now one of them. But Nava says your loved one does not have to be if you are vigilant."You never know the last time you were going to see your child," Nava said. "Even the best most advantage children fall victim to these addictions. Check in on them. It's not anything to be casual about. This is an emergency."10News asked all the neighboring law enforcement agencies to see if they found any cases of Blue pill overdoses or deaths. Most of them said they are looking into it. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man died after falling off a cliff in Escondido Thursday afternoon. Emergency crews were called to the 16000 block of Highland Valley Road late Thursday afternoon after reports of the man dangling more than 50 feet off the side of a cliff. The man was identified Friday as 75-year-old John David Bittner of Julian.Cal Fire says Bittner was working to replace batteries on wildlife cameras when the accident occurred. He was with a friend rappelling down a cliff in Brady Canyon with suffered a fall and yelled for help to his friend.RELATED: Local ill woman among those claiming they were misled by hydrogen water companyCrews were able to recover Bittner using a helicopter, but he enterted cardiopulmonary arrest and died at the scene, Cal Fire and the county Medical Examiner said.CalFire attempted to rescue a climber in remote Escondido who was replacing batteries on wildlife cameras. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - In recent days, swarms of butterflies have been spotted across North County, from Escondido to Vista to Fallbrook. They're Painted Lady butterflies, migrating north from Mexico. Tom Merriman, Director at Butterfly Farms in Encinitas, says conditions have been perfect for the species. The wet winter fueled vegetation growth in the Sonoran Desert in Mexico, giving caterpillars a lot to eat. “You’re going to see butterfly after butterfly after butterfly. Every two, three seconds you're going to see another butterfly coming through.”However, it's hard to predict when and where they'll be throughout the next few weeks. “The conditions were just perfect, I mean there could be over a billion of them, we don’t know. I'm hearing people from Palm Springs to Vista," said Merriman.He says he hasn’t seen a migration this vast in years. They're traveling at about 20 to 25 mph headed north to Oregon where they’ll breed, lay eggs and then die; the next generation will continue on north. The Painted Lady is smaller than the Monarch, and the two are relatives. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A North County baker who has lost thousands of dollars due to postponed or canceled weddings is trying to help neighbors and keep her business afloat at the same time. Jennifer Duarte said owning a bakery is a dream she’s had since she was a child.“There was a bakery close to my house and the lady worked in the window,” said Jennifer Duarte, owner of Elegance on Display. “I would go and I would just stand there and watch her and said, when I grow up I want to do that.” That’s what she did. She has owned Elegance on Display in Fallbrook for 15 years. With the COVID-19 pandemic—and her specialty being wedding cakes—she’s lost a decent chunk of income.“I had 50 weddings postponed… maybe eight of those are canceling completely,” Duarte said. She has three employees, two of which she had to lay off. She hopes to be able to rehire her employees, but for now, she’s just trying to stay in business. With some items, like eggs, hard to find on store shelves, she’s using her connections to provide a service to her neighbors and also make some up some of her lost income. “We can order bulk through our bakery supplier. Last week, I got flour, sugar, eggs, and butter,” Duarte said. She repackages it in smaller amounts to sell to her neighbors. She said she isn’t making a big profit, but the community has been great lending their support. “So many people realize that there’s not a huge mark up on it. They’ve been tipping or volunteering to help with deliveries,”she added. Duarte is also still making cupcakes, cookies, and small cakes for people who would like to place an order. “I’m just trying to bring a little joy to everybody who’s stuck at home. Cupcakes [and] cookies make everybody feel better,” Duarte said. She makes deliveries throughout Fallbrook, although you have to order ahead. You can also place an order for pick up.
