BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) has set up more than 60,000 new grassroots party organizations nationwide while rectifying some 50,000 slack branches during an 18-month campaign to boost party building.The campaign of studying and implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development, launched in September 2008, has covered all the 75 million Party members in more than 370 branches across the country.The Scientific Outlook on Development, set forth by General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President Hu Jintao in 2003, emphasizes the well-being of the people and a comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable approach to development.Statistics show that during the campaign, more than 1.4 million items of outdated bylaws were abolished in units and departments nationwide. In addition, some 2.1 million new ones were issued and 2.5 million were amended. The bylaws cleanup covered science and technology development, environmental protection, people's livelihood, anti-corruption among other aspects.In the non-public sector, 12,000 new CPC branches were set up during the campaign, and another 24,000 are in the pipeline. All the law firms and certified accountant offices in China also have their own CPC branches installed.In a meeting of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee in March, the CPC leaders agreed that the campaign was of far-reaching significance for boosting the cause of China's modernization drive and Party building.CPC committees at all levels were urged to fulfill their commitments to the people, win public trust by bringing practical benefits to them and embrace innovation in Party building and contribute to the promotion of social harmony.

HONG KONG, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held Friday a grand funeral ceremony to say goodbye to well-known businessman Tsui Tsin-tong, who was also a noted social activist, philanthropist and a close friend to the Communist Party of China.Tsui was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee before he died of an illness on April 2 this year in the Chinese capital of Beijing at the age of 69.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, the country's top advisory body, and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping had both sent messages of condolences to Tsui's family after Tsui's death.In their messages of condolences, Jia and Xi praised Tsui for his great contributions to Hong Kong's stable transition, smooth handover from Britain to China and Hong Kong's lasting prosperity, as well as Tsui's contributions to Chinese mainland's reform-and- opening-up drive and modernization.Tsui's funeral ceremony was held at Hong Kong's landmark Convention and Exhibition Center in the day. Four pits and cracks were reported near the villages, with the biggest having a diameter of more than 70 meters and depth of 20 meters.Increased water flow in underground rivers in wake of the torrential rains could have caused the subsidence, a Laibin municipal government official said.Heavy rains began pounding Guangxi Monday and triggered landslides early Wednesday.Across Guangxi, the rainstorms had battered 27 counties and 144,800 people had been evacuated by 4 p.m. Thursday, the regional civil affairs bureau said.In addition, 8,123 houses had collapsed and 161,830 hectares of crops had been damaged. The direct economic losses were estimated at 1.2 billion yuan (176 million U.S. dollars).

BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Beijing police have refuted a rumor that a school attack occurred Thursday morning at a primary school in the city.An Internet post said an attack was carried out at Xiwang Primary School at around 9 a.m. in Sibozi of Beijing's Changping District and the police evacuated all the students on campus."There is no such school in Sibozi. And we never received a report of a school attack," said a spokesman with the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau Thursday afternoon.The police have launched an investigation into the source of the rumor, said the spokesman.The rumor came after a series of recent school attacks in China's Fujian, Guangdong, Jiangsu and Shandong provinces.
