(KGTV) — One of the first Underwater Demolition Team divers of World War II and one of the last living frogmen died early October.Hank Weldon, 95, was a frogman on the first Navy Seal Team 10.  Donna Weldon was married to Weldon for 12 years, she tells 10News, “It’s been the most wonderful marriage you could ever imagine. He was the most wonderful person ever."Donna had one daughter, two sons and a few stepsons. Hank had three daughters. Together they created one large family. Two of his daughters talked with 10News Friday.RELATED: Filipino World War II veterans receive Congressional Gold Medals“I would stand on his feet and dance," Kathy Berg, Weldon's oldest daughter, said.Friday, the family remembered their best memories with their dad. "He was just my dad, he wasn’t a war hero, he wasn’t a good cop, he was just my dad. He didn’t talk about that at home," Terry Andrew, Weldon’s middle daughter, said.To his three daughters, it wasn’t until their adult lives they realized the impact their dad has made and the historic courage he had. “Articles started coming out about you know, what his place really was in the history,” Berg says. She remembers when she started to realize her dad was a war hero when she read about what he did for the country during World War II.RELATED: Community gathers to remember USS Cole bombingWeldon’s wife says he would swim into beaches with nothing but fins, swim bottoms, a mask, and a knife. The frogmen would locate mines and notify ships coming in behind them so the ships wouldn’t hit them. After the war ended, he got out of the Navy in 1945. Six months after he got out, he received a letter telling him he was receiving a Bronze Star.His team was the only team that got through the whole series of operation without losing a man. Fifty years later Hank Weldon was inducted into the Green Berets, known officially as the U.S. Army Special Forces.When Weldon died, his wife got a call, “I got a phone call and it said we’d like to bury him in the national cemetery free of charge but I said no. We’ve had our places in Valley Center for some time and I really want him close to where I can go visit him."Weldon’s Celebration of Life will be held at the Skyline Clubhouse in Valley Center on Oct. 27 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The family has invited the public to join them.  2395

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A pedestrian was hit and killed Saturday morning while on a sidewalk in San Marcos, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.The woman was walking on the 500 block of E. Mission Road around 11 a.m. when she was hit by a black BMW that jumped the curb. Skid marks show the car first tried to stop on the asphalt, then hit the curb, a teenage girl, a tree then a wall. Witnesses said the driver is a baseball player and senior at Mission Hills High School.7-Eleven employees told 10News, the victim is also a student. They said she was at school Saturday morning for dance team rehearsal and walked over to the 7-11 on Mulberry on her break to buy some snacks. On her walk back to school, they said she was hit and killed.Friends of the young woman gathered at the crash site to pay their respects, lay flowers and light candles Saturday night. The driver was not injured and stayed on scene to cooperate with investigators.The cause of the crash is under investigation.Students say that stretch of Mission Road is known for speeding. While the limit is 45 mph, they say the flow of traffic is often 10 miles above that. 1206

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) --  A man is in the hospital tonight after trying to save his dogs in an apartment fire. The Santee Villas Apartments were roaring in flames Thursday night. One of the residents headed directly into the danger zone trying to save his two chihuahua. Melanie Jaracz watched in horror as her neighbor risked his life climbing through a window."They busted out the windows to that," said Jaracz. "He tried climbing through that and they kept dragging him back. Nobody could get him to come out because he was so worried about his animals."Santee fire crews say it started in a bottom unit and quickly spread to three others around it. First responders tried to revive one of the dogs but it was too late. The man was taken to the hospital to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.  887

A full moon occurs once every 29.5 days, so blue moons occur sporadically — about once every two-and-a-half years.When the full moon peaks at 8:37 ET on Saturday, it will mark the second full moon this month. The first full moon occurred on March 2. Take a good look, because it will be awhile before we see one again —Oct. 31, 2020, to be exact.It will actually be the second time this year we've experienced a blue moon. January also saw two blue moons — the first on Jan. 2, the second Jan. 31.2018 marks the first time since 1999 we've seen two blue moons in a single year. (KGTV) - Months after the massive Equifax data breach, a North County couple got some heart-dropping news from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).    Jennifer, who asked 10News not to identify her full name, says her accountant was just about to e-file her taxes when she got the letter from the IRS."It said we needed to verify that we filed, and if we had not filed, we had to call them immediately to tell them we hadn't filed," said Jennifer.RELATED: Equifax finds additional 2.4 million impacted by 2017 breachIn short, someone had already filed in her name, raising the suspicions of IRS employees.    "You feel violated. It's scary," said Jennifer.Jennifer spent an hour on the phone with IRS caseworkers, who told her the red flags were immediate."The numbers for the deductions were off, but also the final number on the refund, which must have been way off," said Jennifer.RELATED: San Diego City Attorney announces lawsuit against Experian over massive data breachThe fraudulent tax filing comes almost seven months after the wide-ranging breach at the credit reporting company Equifax."We immediately and proactively froze our credit and then got letters saying both me and my husband had both been compromised," said Jennifer.While they have credit monitoring and froze their credit, that doesn't protect them from fraud, which is a form of identity theft. Jennifer's accountant told her she wasn't the only one getting these letters from the IRS.RELATED: It's tax scam season. Here's when to call shenanigans"He's seeing a huge uptick in these letters, this year," said Jennifer.Jennifer says her fraud was caught early enough that everything can be cleared up within two months. Now she's bracing for what's next."You're so vulnerable and your information is out there," said Jennifer.According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, the best way to protect yourself is to file your returns as early as possible. If you're mailing returns, mail them directly from the post office. And if filing electronically, use a secure network."Tax time presents a perfect storm for scammers, from tax identity theft to imposter scams, consumers must stay vigilant and prepared. Remember to go to the source of truth when you are contacted by anyone purporting to be from the IRS or other government entity," said Eva Velasquez, President of the Identity Theft Resource Center. 2462
