SAN DIEGO — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A life science development firm has unveiled plans to transform eight acres along San Diego's waterfront into a mixed-use hub that could attract numerous leading edge companies to the city.Development firm IQHQ announced Monday that it closed on the site along Harbor Drive and will break ground on the project's first phase this week. The firm says it has entitlements and key permits for new office, lab and support retail space for the complex, called the San Diego Research and Development District, or RaDD. In a news release, the firm said this would be the largest urban commercial waterfront site along the Pacific Coast. The development is sure to bolster an already vibrant life sciences industry in San Diego, with biotechs clustered mostly in the Torrey Pines area. This could attract more to relocate downtown. The project would be the third major commercial development in downtown, along with the Padres plan to build office space at Tailgate Park, and the redevelopment of Horton Plaza into a tech hub."This is probably, in terms of the commercial sector, the most important pivotal moment in San Diego's modern redevelopment history," said Gary London, of commercial real estate consulting firm London Moeder Advisors.IQHQ chief executive Stephen Rosetta told ABC-10News this was the premier site to build on the west coast, if not the entire USA. "This project is really special to us because we're headquartered here in San Diego, and the partners live locally and have for most of our lives," he siad. IQHQ bought the property from Manchester Financial Group for undisclosed terms. Manchester Financial recently completed the new U.S. Navy Headquarters, on the north end of the site, with move-ins scheduled for October. SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (AP) — An investigation has confirmed students were subjected to a racist taunt and other verbal abuse during a high school football game in Southern California.The Orange County Register reports Sunday that San Clemente High officials say a racial slur was directed at a student from visiting Lincoln High of San Diego on Sept. 13. The slur was made inside a restroom. The school's investigation also found offensive comments were made in the San Clemente stands toward visiting fans and students.San Clemente Principal Chris Carter sent a letter Friday apologizing to both school communities.The letter did not say if any students would be disciplined.The letter said students from San Clemente and Lincoln will participate in a workshop facilitated by the Anti-Defamation League. 811

SAN DIEGO — The race between two Democrats vying to become San Diego's next mayor is neck and neck, according to a new scientific poll.The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll shows State Assemblyman Todd Gloria leading City Councilwoman Barbara Bry 39 percent to 38 percent, with 24 percent undecided. The results are well within the SurveyUSA poll's 5.3 percent margin of error. The race is even closer now than it was a month ago, when a similar poll showed Bry leading Gloria 37 percent to 34 percent, also within the margin of error. While both are Democrats, the poll showed Bry getting a majority of her support from Republicans and Independents, while Todd Gloria retained a lead among Democrats. "Barbara Bry is talking about neighborhood issues and slowing down the growth of San Diego, whereas Todd Gloria is talking about addressing housing and doing some growth," said Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego. "That finds a political divide over growth that often separates moderates from liberals, or Democrats from Republicans even though both of these candidates Barbara Bry and Todd Gloria are both strong Democrats."Gloria took home 41 percent of the vote in the March primary, with Bry coming in second with 23 percent. She beat out Republican Scott Sherman by 1,189 to get into the top-two runoff, and his voters appear to be supporting her. SurveyUSA's poll shows 46 percent of Republicans voting in the mayor's race are supporting Bry, while 46 percent of independents voting in the race also plan to support Bry. Meanwhile, 24 percent of Republicans and 27 percent of independents voting in the race are supporting Gloria. Gloria's support is coming mostly from Democrats, with 53 percent of members of his own party planning to vote for him, compared to 27 percent for Bry. The remainder are undecided."There are different shades of blue within this city and this mayoral race is all about deciding what kind of Democrat San Diego will be governed by," Kousser said. In a statement, a spokesman for Gloria said they were focused on November 3. “The only poll that matters is Election Day," he said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 27-year-old man is recovering Sunday after being shot in the back in the Mountain View area , police said.A verbal argument between two groups Saturday in the 200 block of Southlook Avenue, which started just before 9 p.m., escalated into a violent encounter, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department."During the fight someone fired multiple shots into the crowd," he said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A health executive and the mayor of Poway were clinging to narrow leads Wednesday in their bids to claim open seats on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, while an incumbent was on the verge of being voted out.District 1 board members Greg Cox and District 2's Dianne Jacob are both termed out, meaning the board will have at least two new members.Cox, a Republican, has been in office since 1995, representing the district that includes National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and Coronado, along with 19 communities within the city of San Diego, including Barrio Logan and Sunset Cliffs. It also features the unincorporated communities of Bonita, East Otay Mesa, Lincoln Acres and Sunnyside.Nora Vargas, a health executive, expanded on an early lead in the race to replace him, securing 54.6% of the vote to 45.4% for state Sen. Ben Hueso.Both Vargas and Hueso are Democrats.Hueso, a former San Diego City Council member, has represented Senate District 40 since 2013.Vargas is a vice president of Planned Parenthood of the Southwest and also serves on the Southwest Community College board.The District 2 race, meanwhile, had Poway Mayor Steve Vaus with a narrow 50.6% to 49.4% lead over fellow Republican and former state lawmaker Joel Anderson.The termed-out Jacob, also a Republican, joined the Board of Supervisors in 1993.
