SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Washington Nationals will look to a former San Diego State Aztec to lead them into Game 2 of the 2019 World Series.Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg takes the mound Wednesday night against the Astros, dueling with Houston ace Justin Verlander. So he's connected to our program so there's a big sense of pride with our guys," Martinez, now team head coach, told reporters Tuesday. "You can hear them out there talking about Stephen. He's just done so much for our program, you know, being involved with our guys. And backing them not just on the baseball field but in life lessons as well."Strasburg was named to the SDSU Hall of Fame in 2014, boasting college records for the most strikeouts in a game (23), in a season (195), and in a college career (375). He also holds the SDSU record for lowest career ERA at 1.59. He walks into Game 2 with a 3-0 record in the playoffs, pitching a 1.64 ERA. You're going to weather it," Strasburg told the Associated Press ahead of his start.And Strasburg now joins some recent Aztecs who have also notched MLB post season appearances.The last SDSU alumnus to appear in a World Series game was former outfielder Quintin Berry with the 2013 Boston Red Sox, according to Baseball-Reference.com. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The US Census is looking to hire thousands of people in San Diego, and hoping that /hour and flexible schedules are enough to entice people to apply."It takes a community to count a community," says Census Outreach Specialist David Bennett. "We're trying to count everybody once, only once, in the right place. We need help."Right now, the Census is putting on a hiring blitz around the country, with half-a-million jobs to fill. They're canvassing college campuses and other public places where people may be looking for a part-time job."It's for people, especially in this gig-economy, who are looking to get some extra money and be a part of history," says Bennett.Jobs range from counters who will go door to door to management. They can last anywhere from 6 weeks to two years. Pay starts at .50/hour."It's so important," says Bennett. "Our founders wanted to make sure our government looked like our citizens. That's why we do the Census."To be eligible, you must be a US Citizen, 18 years or older, and available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Bennett says there are some exceptions if you're not a citizen but speak a foreign language that can help with the count.Applications take about 10 minutes to complete and can be done online or over the phone. 1303

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Department says pedestrian fatalities are going up in California - so they're cracking down on drivers, pedestrians and those violating laws that pertain to motorized scooters. All of this, just as new reports show a flood of scooter-related injuries backing up local emergency rooms. Wednesday night SDPD sent out targeted patrols to downtown and Lincoln Park. Two spots where pedestrian and bike collisions have increased in the last three years. In many cases, traffic violations led to those crashes. 10News watched as officers ticketed more than 50 people, and gave out more than 20 warnings. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo's newest resident is getting the hang of life as a rhino.Edward, the southern white rhino, experienced is first trot around the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center Monday.With his mom, Victoria, leading the way, Edward charged around the enclosure and even fit a mud bath into his busy schedule. It was the first time the mom and calf were released from the center's maternity yard and other off-exhibit areas.RELATED: Birth of baby rhino marks major milestone in effort to save critically endangered species“Victoria has been in the exhibit yard before but this was Edward’s first time,” said Jill Van Kempen, senior keeper at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “The second they entered the exhibit, Victoria just took off, running laps, and it was so fun to see Edward running right along beside her. He was very energetic, sometimes breathing heavily, and even getting all four feet off the ground at times.”For about 30 minutes, the zoo says Edward and Victoria took advantage of the larger space by running around and stretching their legs.Edward was born 23 days ago, becoming the first southern white rhino calf born via artificial insemination in the country. Edward was born weighing about 148 pounds, but now weighs about 243 pounds.
