New York City is painting the town…white! But the paint isn’t for aesthetics. The city is coating rooftops in order to reduce the internal temperature of a building by 30 percent."Painting a rooftop reflects the sun's radiant energy on the building,” explains Gregg Bishop, commissioner with NYC Small Business Services.Bishop says this reduces air conditioning costs.The initiative is called Cool Roofs. Officials say the initiative is helping to reduce the impact New York has on the climate, while lowering energy costs."Here in the city, we're facing temperatures that can be up to 22 degrees hotter than surrounding rural and suburban areas," says Jainey Bavishi, with the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency.Since the program launched, they've covered 9 million square feet of rooftops.A similar initiative launched recently in Los Angeles, where they're testing reflective streets. The trend is growing. Academic research shows reflective surfaces do make a difference."What some of my own work has found out is that cool roofs are actually very effective at decreasing, for example, summertime temperatures, on the order of 1 to 3 degrees which is quite significant," explains Dr. Matei Georgescu, with the Global Institute of Sustainability at Arizona State University.While there are definitely benefits to making surfaces like this rooftop reflective, researchers say there may be some downsides as well."If you deploy highly reflective roofs, you're now assuming high reflectivity during the entire winter,” says Dr. Georgescu. “In other words, you're making things a lot colder than normally they would have been.”Dr. Georgescu studies reflective surfaces and says it could mean higher heating costs in the winter."We don't wanna give back 50 percent of these benefits during the winter."He says a possible solution might be reflective covers that would be removable during cold months.The city says any higher heating bills in the winter have been negligible. For now, officials have no plans to cool down the Cool Roofs program. 2067

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Jason Seaman, the hero teacher who stopped a school shooter at Noblesville West Middle School Friday, was honored at a baseball game Monday morning.The game was an Indiana Sectional Championship baseball game between Noblesville High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School. A moment of silence was held before Seaman arrived, then students began chanting Seaman's name, "Mis-ter Sea-man!"In an especially powerful moment, Seaman walked to some of his students who wanted to see him, with a fence separating them. He was shot three times during the incident, but released from the hospital Saturday. Noblesville Schools is selling T-shirts to raise money for Seaman and the other victim in the shooting, Ella Whistler. New research released today from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that vehicular crashes have increased in states where recreational marijuana is legal.The nonprofit organization took crash data from four states where recreational pot is legal: Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Colorado.The findings revealed crashes were up as much as 6 percent, when compared with adjacent states that don't have legalized marijuana.Now, the research doesn't prove marijuana is directly responsible for the increase, but it does show a correlation.  The organization’s president says we should all take these numbers as an early warning sign.“The real key is not so much the magnitude of the number as it is the direction we're seeing,” says David Harkey, president at Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. “And that we think this is a really good early indicator of the potential issues associated with this policy change of recreational use of marijuana.”There are still a lot of unknowns regarding marijuana in terms of how it affects the human body. For example, when someone is drunk, you can measure their blood alcohol content with a breathalyzer. However, there is no equivalent real-time test for measuring THC, the psychoactive component in marijuana. 1279

Nestled along the edge of Lake Champlain, where Vermont and New York meet, is the kind of place postcards aspire.Beautiful farmlands like Seth Lapidow’s sit in Shoreham, Vermont. But while there are some animals on Lapidow’s farm, he’s a very different kind of farmer.Late last year, this 62-year-old farmer gave up his multimillion-dollar New York City law firm, to begin a start-up CBD farm. Things grew almost as quickly as the cannabidiol plants that surround his property.“At the end of 2019, we had a solid year. We had a solid year,” said Lapidow, while looking out toward the apple orchards that surround his property.But when COVID-19 struck, the farm had to shut down for two months. There was no harvesting and no retail sales. Even months after the shutdown, there are still streams of revenue for this farm that have disappeared completely.“People stopped paying their bills. I don’t know what the murder rate of my customers is. I don’t know how many are gone for good,” Lapidow said.After initially laying off all his employees, he has been able to rehire most of them. Sales are still down year-to-year, but COVID is giving some in the industry an unexpected boost.Researchers at Augusta University in Georgia have found new evidence that cannabis-derived CBD may help those suffering from severe lung inflammation that occurs in more serious cases of COVID-19.Legally, because it's not FDA approved, Lapidow can't make claims about what his products do. But many of his customers are using CBD creams, pills, and even bath soaps to help deal with the anxiety so many of us are feeling during the pandemic.“It just binds to receptors in your system and seems to balance things out for a lot of people,” he noted.As for Vermont Pure CBD, they, like so many other small businesses, are just trying to be creative preparing for how COVID-19 might change the landscape of their farm. 1903
