SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Airbnb announced Thursday that it’s banning all parties and events at the listings on its website to comply with limits on gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic.The San Francisco-based company says the party ban applies to all future bookings on Airbnb and it will remain in effect indefinitely until further notice.Additionally, Airbnb says the occupancy at its listings will be capped at 16 people. Though, the company says it’s considering a potential exception process for specialty and traditional hospitality venues, like boutique hotels.“We also understand that 16 is not a magic number, and issues can occur with groups of any size,” wrote the company. “To be clear, we are not sanctioning smaller gatherings with this policy and all community members are expected to comply with local health restrictions on gatherings. We are capping guests at 16 in these large properties as one step amongst several, all designed to mitigate any efforts to misuse an Airbnb for a party.”Airbnb says guests will be informed about its party rules and told that they may be “legally pursued” by the company if they violate the policy.Unauthorized parties have actually always been prohibited at Airbnb listings and the company says 73% of its listings already ban them in their house rules.Over the last year or two, Airbnb has begun imposing stricter limits, starting with a global ban on “party houses,” or listings that create persistent neighborhood nuisance. And when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, a new policy was introduced that required all users to adhere to local coronavirus mandates.“However, in many large jurisdictions, public health mandates on gatherings have changed – and in some places swung back and forth in response to the changing rates of COVID cases – as have regulations on bars, clubs and pubs,” wrote Airbnb. “Some have chosen to take bar and club behavior to homes, sometimes rented through our platform. We think such conduct is incredibly irresponsible – we do not want that type of business, and anyone engaged in or allowing that behavior does not belong on our platform.”Based on these developments, the company says instituting a global ban on parties and events is in the best interest of public health. 2265

(AP) — The Mercury News reports that California’s largest utility company said its equipment might have caused a fatal wildfire last month in Northern California.Investigators for the state have seized some of Pacific Gas & Electric’s gear in connection with the blaze, known as the Zogg fire, the company told state regulators. The blaze broke out Sept. 27 near the Shasta County town of Igo. The Shasta County wildfire began in the vicinity of Zogg Mine Road and Jenny Bird Lane. (KGTV) — Border officials seized more than million in unreported currency being smuggled into Mexico through San Ysidro.Officials stopped a vehicle on Dec. 9 in the southbound I-5 lane at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The vehicle was referred to inspection where canine officers alerted CBP officers to the driver's side quarter panel of the vehicle.Officers discovered numerous packages containing undeclared U.S. currency in the quarter panel, under the vehicle's third row of seats, and in the cargo area, CBP says."CBP officers and a canine team successfully stopped the smuggling of the currency during outbound inspections," said Anne Maricich, Acting Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. "This is a demonstration of great police work and dedication to the CBP mission by our officers with the goal of stopping the illicit movement of currency through the border."The money was seized by the CBP. 995

SANTEE, Calif. (CNS) - Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law a bill authored by Sen. Brian Jones, R-Santee, which extends immunity from liability for local governments that operate skate parks, the lawmaker announced Tuesday.Senate Bill 1003 follows a similar bill Jones wrote in 2015 while he was a member of the Assembly that provided a four-year immunity window for municipally operated skate parks. SB 1003 makes that immunity permanent."Senate Bill 1003 grants much-needed immunity from liability for communities that operate skate parks," Jones said. "Local skateboarders and sport riders get a safer place than the streets to carve, do McTwists or ollies, and taxpayers are not going to be liable for the occasional mishap that is inherent to all active sports."SB 1003 was sponsored by the County of San Diego, and as an urgency measure, goes into effect immediately.The bill was co-authored by Sens. Scratch and sniff stickers have gone high tech, becoming another way to test for coronavirus.Researchers at the University of Colorado and Yale University have developed a “u-Smell-it” test that works with an app.Essentially, users will use a high-tech scratch and sniff to detect whether they've lost their sense of smell.“There's five windows and they have different odors on each of them. Basically, all you have to do is take an app on your phone, and you basically scan the card. It has a QR code, and it recognizes the unique combination of odors. This is really important because you want the test to be different every time,” said Derek Toomre, professor at the Yale University School of Medicine.The user will choose the corresponding odors. And after, they're done. The app will give them a score on how well they did or didn't do.This test isn't meant to replace the PCR test or antibody tests that are approved by the FDA.“This would be a supplement. This would not be to replace. This would be a supplement so that, if you failed to smell, then you would know to go in for an antigen or PCR test, but you're more likely to be positive on those tests, so it would actually be really, really helpful. Think of it as a pretest.”Researchers behind the “u-Smell-it” test hope that it will help with the current testing shortage. Right now, they are seeking FDA approval for emergency use.
