A Florida sheriff's deputy who worked at a school for children with emotional and behavioral problems is facing a felony charge after video shows him slamming a female student to the ground after she tapped his knee with her foot.Broward County Deputy Willard Miller was charged Tuesday with felony child abuse without great bodily harm for the Sept. 25 altercation. Sheriff Gregory Tony suspended him without pay until internal disciplinary procedures are complete.School security video shows Miller standing and texting inside an office at Cross Creek School when the 15-year-old walks behind him and uses her left foot to push the back of his right knee, causing it to buckle. She walks away.In the silent video, Miller can be seen speaking to the girl for just over a minute from about 10 feet (3 meters) away while two women watch.He then suddenly walks toward the girl, grabs her throat and throws her to the ground.He flips her onto her stomach, puts a knee against her back and pulls her arms behind her.He then forcibly lifts her up using her pinned arms and throws her out of the room, where an investigator's report says she slammed against a wall.Tony would not say what Miller and the girl said to each other after the knee tap, but he said nothing the girl said or did justified the 38-year-old deputy's actions. School lockdown. It's a term that has become far too common in America. An analysis by the Washington Post found more than 4.1 million students were involved in at least one lockdown in the 2017-2018 school year. One million of those students were in elementary school. "Being able to have the capacity to lockdown a school effectively is a really important safety tool,” says Amanda Klinger, a school safety educator and advocate. Klinger says although school lockdowns are needed, how they are conducted can be traumatic for students. “There is a cost,” she explains. “There is a cost to emotional anxiety cost.” Data shows 15 percent of all school lockdowns are related to threats, including bomb threats. Another 15 percent is related to police manhunts, and at least 61 percent were related to firearms. Klinger says for student’ mental well-being, we have to do better job communicating why they’re going on lockdown. "It's just a big family thing."Timmy's parents sought to soften news of the illness by saving money to purchase a special gift for the boy: a replica WWE championship title belt.To make the belt appear more authentic, the parents connected via Facebook with belt designer Sergio Moreira in Washington.Moreira said he offered to do work free of charge, replacing the plastic gems with cubic zirconia and thickening the plates."It'll be as close to the original belt that he sees on TV every say than any other belt he could buy in the market," Moreira said.The Vicks shipped the belt across the country, with the package being left on Moreira's porch earlier this week.
