SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For his 97th birthday one of Ed Stankowski's sons asked if he'd like to visit the USS Midway. The WWII veteran was on the ship for her maiden voyage in 1945. “He shot him down initially and says no I can’t go, you know I can't do that, he says, how am I going to get around?" said Paul Stankowski, another one of Ed's sons. “By 7 o' clock the next morning he was calling my brother up and says, hey when can we go!”Surrounded by four generations, Ed traveled from Wisconsin to San Diego. He got a private tour of the ship and told stories along the way. “Ha! My first night at sea I was seasick like a dog!" remembers Ed.One of the first stops on the tour was visiting the area he once worked in. “I was a Radioman, I was teaching the new recruits the radio code, international Morse code, and the procedure that they use for communicating," said Ed. Ed says he enjoyed his time in the Navy and that being back on the ship brought back memories. “I was very happy to get on a ship like that. It was the biggest ship we had in the Navy at the time and something to be a part of.” 1105

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Health officials said Wednesday that they are working with the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District to notify people possibly exposed to tuberculosis. Officials said the possible exposures happened at the college’s El Cajon and Rancho San Diego campuses between January 30 and April 24, according to County News Service.The college will be providing no-cost screenings to people who are identified as possibly having been exposed to TB.“Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “But most people who are exposed do not develop the disease and TB can be treated and cured with medication.”The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency says it’s important for individuals with symptoms of TB, or who are immune-compromised to see their medical provider to rule out TB. 940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Former Congressman Duncan Hunter Sr. called his son’s opponent in the November election a threat to national security to his face on Tuesday.Hunter Sr., the father of Congressman Duncan D. Hunter, held what he called a “security briefing” on Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar across from the U.S.S Midway Museum. Campa-Najjar is running against Duncan D. Hunter for his seat in the 50th Congressional District. Congressman Hunter and his wife Margaret are currently facing 60 federal charges of wire fraud and conspiracy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For families who want to give their kids some Halloween fun but avoid traditional trick-or-treating, the city is offering a quick and safe alternative.Wednesday through Saturday, the City of San Diego will offer free bags of candy for families to drive through or walk up and select as an alternative to going door-to-door this Halloween amid the pandemic.The sites will be set up at various times across 27 recreation centers in the city. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the third day in a row, the county is reporting record-high coronavirus numbers.The county is reporting 440 new cases Friday, bringing the total to 12,401.In addition to new cases, the county also hit one of its 13 triggers. County officials said Friday that the average number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has increased by 19 percent in three days.
