SHANGHAI, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin on Friday called for broader and deeper exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan, and stressed the role of cultural exchanges.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks in Shanghai at a forum of social groups of Taiwan compatriots.Historic changes have been achieved in cross-Strait relations in recent years along with a series of positive results, and a favorable situation of peaceful development has emerged, Jia said.He said the fields of exchanges should be expanded to promote cross-Strait exchanges.He welcomed more Taiwan compatriots to visit the Chinese mainland in the future to enhance their understanding of the mainland's social and economic development, and encouraged more mainlanders to travel to Taiwan, especially to the central and southern parts of the island.He also hoped that compatriots home and abroad would participate and promote cross-Strait exchanges and benefit from them.The top political advisor also said cultural exchanges must be enhanced.Both sides across the Strait should work together to promote the Chinese culture and increase its influence.Lien Chan, honorary chairman of the Kuomintang Party (KMT), said at the forum that it was not easy to achieve the current peaceful, stable and rapidly developing state of cross-Strait relations.He urged both sides to cherish such a historic opportunity and lay the groundwork for peace, prosperity and sustainable development across the Strait.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai said Tuesday that China was willing to enhance energy dialogue and cooperation with other nations.China attaches great importance to energy-saving and environmental protection while striving to achieve a comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development of energy, Ma said during a meeting with some participants of the 2010 China International Energy Forum in Beijing.The participants included Pierre Gadonneix, chairman of the World Energy Council, and Randall Gossen, president of the World Petroleum Council.Ma said China's energy consumption mainly depended on domestic supply. BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 24, while 24 others remained missing, officials at the rescue headquarters said Saturday.The mudslides occurred at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday in a village of Longyang District in Baoshan City.Experts said the area is prone to landslides and it is recommended to permanently remove its population to safer areas, said Zhao Maoqi, vice head of Longyang District Government.Authorities will soon begin to select a site and work on a relocation plan. Local residents are expected to move into new houses early next year, said Zhao.Up to 40,000 cubic meters of debris came crashing down on the village, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting atop a steep slope that had been soaked by rain for about 10 days.

TAIPEI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Financial organizations from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have stepped up cooperation to take advantage of business opportunities brought by a landmark cross-Strait economic pact, the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA).The board of directors of Taiwan-based Taishin Financial Holdings decided on Sept. 9 to sign a cooperation agreement with mainland-based Nanjing Zijin Investment Co., a move hailed by the company as "the first step to enter the mainland."The agreement aims to promote exchanges and cooperation between the two companies and their subsidiaries, while Nanjing Zijin will ease the way for Taishin's new operations on the mainland, Taishin said.The company's Taishin Bank is also planning to set up an office in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.Prior to this, China Huarong Asset Management Corporation (CHAMC) and Taiwan-based SinoPac Holdings signed an agreement in Beijing on Sept. 3 to begin a new strategic cooperation. According to the agreement, the two sides will cooperate in personnel training, exchange of management experiences and information, as well as in research, development of new products and new business models.Huarong President Lai Xiaomin said the ECFA would promote a quickening flow of economic resources across the Taiwan Strait, including the movement of personnel, materials, capital and information."The ECFA will bring great business opportunities for cross-Strait economic development and boost cooperation between financial institutions on both sides, thus bringing new development opportunities for financial industries across the Strait," he said.The ECFA, which is to take effect on Sunday, was signed by negotiators from the mainland and Taiwan in June, and aims to establish a systematic mechanism for enhancing cross-Strait economic cooperation.Wang Jianmin, a researcher of the Institute of Taiwan Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said substantial financial cooperation between the two sides has lagged behind trade cooperation for a long time."The ECFA, however, will have a positive impact," he said.The banking service sectors might be among the first to make breakthroughs in cross-Strait financial cooperation.The mainland-based Bank of China and Bank of Communications applied to the Taiwan economic department on Sept. 7 to set up representative offices in Taiwan.According to the ECFA, mainland banks can set up representative offices in Taiwan upon approval by the Taiwan authority and can then apply to set up a branch bank one year after the establishment of representative offices on the island.
