She's educated 5,000 families across five states on dental health and distributed 130,000 dental supplies in Georgia and India. She was motivated to research preventative measures for oral cancer after she lost her grandmother to the disease several years ago."My health model has been embraced by dental offices, state dental associations, national mobile programs and schools in two countries. And to kind of further the reach of Help a Child Smile, I created a non-profit called Mila Foundation to kind of support the oral healthcare services provided by Help a Child Smile," said Siya K.This year's National Gold Award Girl Scouts have done everything from create theater access for children with disabilities to engineer an insulin calculator app. Julia T. lobbied for menstrual equity in her home state of Colorado."Definitely, it began within my own high school where I saw a lot of girls struggling to handle their menstrual cycles with dignity and efficiency in the learning environment. Because of varying incomes in our school and also the lack of accessibility, it made it so that girls had a hard time being able to talk about such private matters with their teachers. So, they would have to leave school and miss class," said Julia T.Julia was working with her local legislator to expand access to menstrual products in schools. The bill went to the House Committee for Education before the pandemic. She hopes to bring it back before legislators in the future. "What I love about the Gold Award is it's really a culmination of the Girl Scout experience, because at every level girls are taught to take agency and action on issues they care about. With the Gold Award, it's the highest award you can earn in Girl Scouts," said Kelly Parisi, the VP of Executive and Brand Communications at the Girl Scouts of the USA. Parisi says Gold Award Girl Scouts are tasked with developing long standing change for an issue they care about.Each council across the country submits three of their most exceptional Gold Award Girl Scouts and a panel chooses the top ten. Officers in Columbus, Ohio are crediting a good Samaritan for tripping a suspect who was reaching into his waistband while being chased by officers. The police department released video from the April 3 incident on Thursday. Cameras captured the man, who Columbus Police are calling "Bill," casually sticking out his leg outside of a public library as the suspect ran behind him. The suspect then went flying into the sidewalk, giving officers an opportunity to arrest the unidentified suspect. Police said that they recovered a Glock 9 MM pistol with a high capacity extended clip containing 29 rounds near the suspect. Columbus Police added that citizen likely saved the suspect's life as officers might have shot the suspect for pulling out the gun. In the video released by Columbus Police, Bill said that he could see the suspect was holding something from his waistband."I heard him hit and the gun went sliding out," Bill said. Ohio's Attorney General and the U.S. Marshals Service announced the results of Operation Autumn Hope on Monday — a month-long, multi-agency crackdown focused on sexually-based crimes in the state.According to press releases from the U.S. Marshals and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, the operation netted hundreds of arrests for various sex crimes and the "physical recovery" of dozens of missing children throughout the month of October.In its press release, U.S. Marshals Service said Monday that "Operation Autumn Hope" took place "during the month of October," and Yost said in a press release that the operation involved "more than 50 law enforcement agencies" at the local, state and federal level.Throughout the month, Yost said that during the operation, 109 human trafficking victims were referred to social services. It's unclear how many people, if any, were arrested and charged with crimes relating to sex trafficking.Both Yost and the U.S. Marshals also said that 45 "missing or exploited children" were "physically recovered." Of those cases, at least one — that of a missing 15-year-old girl — was confirmed to have been linked to a human trafficking case. It's unclear if any of the other missing children cases involved human trafficking.Yost also said that throughout the month-long operation, 22 people were "apprehended" for seeking to have sex with a minor. It's unclear how many of those will face charges, but among those who are facing charges include "a pastor, students, and a rehabilitation resident advisor."Finally, Yost said that 157 men across the state were arrested "on charges of soliciting and other crimes."Students from Case Western Reserve University's Human Trafficking Law Project were partners in the operation. Ten faculty, law students and masters-level social work students met with survivors in the field and offered free legal representation and social services referrals."This experience allowed our students to witness firsthand a prime example of the inter-professional collaboration that is critical to anti-trafficking efforts," said Laura McNally-Levine, associate dean for Experiential Education at Case. "Participants gained insight into the incredible toll this heinous crime takes on its victims, and observed the difference that can be made by providing survivors with access to legal and social services.
