KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Doctors across the country are working to figure out a medical mystery that's left a Smithville, Missouri, teenager losing her senses, including her vision. Jordyn Walker is 15 years old and now permanently blind, part of a medical mystery she's been battling for more than a year and a half. "I just hope it never happens again," she said. "I don't really know what else I can lose." Walker's symptoms first appeared in July 2017. At first, the teen experienced stomach pains associated with her colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. Then her face began to swell and her eyes, ears and nose began to bleed. Walker lost her sense of taste and smell. "It was terrifying knowing that there is nothing I could do for her and just watching her go through this," said her mom, Kendyll Walker. Tests results in 2017 from an out-of-state hospital came back normal so Walker's family believed it was a one-time thing. A year later, she went to the emergency room at The University of Kansas Hospital. Her severe symptoms had returned and were much worse. "How rapid her face started swelling and how rapid the pressure in her eyes went up were quite alarming," said Dr. Travis Langner, who is the division chief for the hospital's pediatric critical care unit. Walker stayed in the pediatric critical care unit and underwent emergency eye surgery. The pressure on her eyes was too severe and caused her to lose her sight permanently. "It's frustrating for the family, it's frustrating for us not to have pinpointed the answer and have a definite diagnosis," Langner said. "But we've gotten enough answers from the tests, enough negative answers, to know what it's not. So now it's finding the definitive answer of what it is." When she popped the hood, she found more than 200 walnuts and lots of grass."They were everywhere, under the battery, near the radiator fan," Chris said. "The walnuts on the engine block were black and smelt like they were definitely roasting."Holly had her car inspected last month but hadn't looked under the hood since then, her husband Chris told CNN on Tuesday. NASCAR officials said Newman had non life-threatening injuries following a horrific crash at the end of the Daytona 500 on Monday.Newman is in serious condition after being transported to the hospital. As Newman approached the finish line of the Daytona 500 on Monday, he was set to win his first Daytona 500 in 12 years. But a nudge from behind sent Newman into the wall as his competitors crossed the finish line. The crash allowed Denny Hamlin to win his second straight Daytona 500. As Hamlin celebrated the win, attention quickly turned to Newman, whose car spun out of control and burst into flames. After Newman's car struck the wall and flipped, it was then struck at full speed by Corey LaJoie's vehicle, causing Newman's car to flip again. Emergency crews raced to rescue Newman following the stunning crash.The celebration for Hamlin was subdued following the race."I think we take for granted sometimes how safe the cars are," Hamlin said. "But No. 1, we're praying for Ryan. Worked really well with Ryan through this whole race, and obviously he got turned right there."Ryan Blaney, who came in second place, described his view of the incident. "We pushed Newman there to the lead, and then we got a push from the 11 (Danny Hamlin's car), and I made a move off 4 (Kevin Harvick's car) on Newman and he blocked it and I kind of went low and he blocked that, so then I was committed to just pushing him to the win and trying to have a Ford win it, and I don't know, we just got bumpers hooked up wrong and turned him," Blaney said. "I hope he's all right. Looked pretty good. Definitely was trying to push him to a win. I don't want to say those things happen.
