The city attorney is cracking down on independent living facilities that are posing a danger to their residents - and potentially neighbors.City Attorney Mara Elliott's office is investigating about two-dozen of these facilities and prosecuting the operators of six, the office announced Wednesday. The facilities, often inside single-family homes, are unregulated and unlicensed. They provide physically and mentally disabled persons a last chance to avoid homelessness. But Elliott said the operators often take advantage of residents. She said this came onto her radar after investigating a home last year. "It was a horrible situation where 11 individuals were essentially being held captive in this home and didn't have sanitary facilities," she said. "The shower facilities were covered in feces, they didn't have food they didn't have ventilation, they didn't have access to telephones."On Wednesday, Elliott's office announced charges against two more facilities, one on Parkbrook Lane in Skyline and another on Brandywood Street in North Bay Terraces. Operators and owners are charged with violations including vermin infestations, blocked exists, improper plumbing, and fire hazards. People who live near the Parkbrook Lane home described shouting in the middle of the night, verbal harassment, physical fighting and graffiti. "We moved because of it," said one neighbor, whose first name was Tammy. The home had trash and old mattresses on the property. The owner, Evelyn Louise Peters, said the issues identified were only one-time instances and the trash accumulated after the home was vacated. Sherry Lynn Bennett, who manages the home in North Bay Terraces, said the issues are being dealt with."The owners have been doing all the repairs, everything is done, everything's back to normal, we've done everything the city's said," Bennett said. Bennett and Peters are charged with 22 misdemeanor violations of the health, safety and municipal codes.There is no telling how many of these facilities exist in the county. In December, a man living in an El Cajon independent living home was beaten to death with a frying pan. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult and stressful time for families, but we're seeing one silver lining when it comes to fathers and their kids.Nearly 70% of dads in a recent study from the Harvard Graduate School of Education say they're feeling closer to their kids right now.The dads have had to be home more than usual, but one of the people involved with the study also believes it's helping that dads may be less distracted with work than they usually are.Also, parents' social lives have changed, so they're doing things with their kids they may have done with their friends previously.Dads in the study say they're also getting to know their kids better. More than half say they're spending more time talking to their children about things that are important to them.“I think we're all better parents when we know our kids better,” said Richard Weissbourd, who directs the Making Caring Common Project at Harvard. “I mean it's respectful to enable our kids to really speak, but we also learn a lot about them and it deepens our relationships with them and it also helps us I think in being mentors and guides to them when they make key decisions in their lives.”The Making Caring Common Project is a national effort to make moral and social development priorities in raising kids.Weissbourd is worried there will be a strong pull to return to our normal lives and dads' relationships won't continue in the same way.But you can take steps now to keep those bonds.“I really encourage fathers to establish rituals and routines with their kids now, like if you're going for a walk every weekend with your kid, continue doing that even when the pandemic is over,” said Weissbourd. “If you're playing games with your kid, develop a ritual around playing games with your kids or activities.”He says more fathers are also watching TV with their kids and talking with them about what's going on in the world surrounding the pandemic and the protests. The Cumberland, Wisconsin High School Class of 2018 got a special shout out from the local police department on an epic senior prank.The police department said on Facebook it was "one of the best senior pranks that Cumberland High School has seen."Students positioned an old junker strewn with loose bricks in front of what appeared to be a gaping black hole in the building's side, just outside the principal's office.It wasn't actually a hole, though. Using tape and a black tarp, the students created the illusion of damage, making it look like the car crashed into the side of the building. The back of the car said, "CHS Class of 2018."The best part?
